I sat there and tried to sell my tiger on DF, and one of my friends started to ask me questions about it. He also wanted to be insured it was lockable. And he kept asking for it...

I decided to try it just to be sure, - but before I did that; I did do a detect hidden in my house as I got a public house and many knows where I live, including this friend that was so intrested.

To my not so suprize, he popped up on my tile...

This aint stealing, but scamming - im just sad to see a friend go that line. To cross the line from a in game thief to a pure scammer. Even tho, this is the oldest trick in the book....

Sounds like a good reminder to people to always check with detect hidden in their house. ;)

He claimed some was not lockable other was - i was presuming the duped was not. I know this is vendorable, but Im glad I did take precatuioun and did detect hidden before I tried it. IF not, i had fallen for it and lost my tiger.

Some peoples dont count milions, he would never had my trust of it at all... But he was a friend. Im sure my alliance know him by now, so we sure to not trust him. Just sad to see peoples go like this!

That is the reason I posted this here, and that I was so happy I did do that!!! It is the oldest trick, but many falls for it. And people that wanna scam and steal find the most fantastic ways to lure you. This is a easy example.

Yep... that would be one more person to add to the ever growing "Do NOT Trust" list I have. There are some folk that will remain there on a permanent basis.

Glad you saved yourself the heartache and found out the true colors of that friendship.

Back during the original ticket-reward system from back in the late 90's early 2000's I had eagerly saved up for the furniture dye tub. A person whom I had met and became friends with for 3-4 months prior had asked to borrow it to color some of his furniture items. I reluctantly gave him the tub and decided to give him my trust. He said he would only need it for one day. A day, two and several more passed without my tub being returned. I had begun asking him about getting it back, he had dodged. Eventually after repeatedly asking him he said "I am sorry bud, but I need this more than you. You won't be getting this back."

It hurt. It was the first time I had ever put my trust in someone for what was at the time, an extremely high valued item. It ruined a good week of UO for me as I was not rich and It costed 100,000 points for the tub (if I am not mistaken) and items such as hair and beard dyes were around 10,000 points.

The guy threw his friendship away over an item which eventually became available through Veteran rewards and the furny tub eventually became common. It was a high price to pay for what ended up being an item that didn't carry that much value in the long run. He ended up spending his last bit of time in UO cold and lonely with no credibility and friends and eventually left the game.

The value of someone's word is more valuable than any item that exists in UO.

There was another time, shortly after the release if Trammel, that another person who was a friendly acquaintance I have known for about a month wanted to buy a bow I had posted on a then popular UO Trading website. I had been to his house several times before as we have hunted and played the game together in the past. He had asked me to bring it over to his house.

Remembering my previous situation posted above, I had agreed to bring the bow. But I had an escape plan should something go sour.

I showed up to his house (in fel) and he opened the door for me to get inside. I went in but only stood in the entranceway for several seconds. Two reds popped out hidden behind me and the guy himself had begun attacking me. I quickly darted out of the house, used some invis jewelry to hide and then recalled away at my first chance.

He didn't get the weapon and it had cost him all of his credibility to try to steal it. He too didn't last much longer in UO.

We all have a story I am sure. Thanks for being brave and posting yours here. Sorry that happened but I agree with Kariny always do detect hidden. I have the skill button on every character I have up and ready to go. I have also banned any stealther I busted trying to follow me in a house and know I might be decorating. Muhahaha gotcha! :eyes:

He ejected himself from my house before i could ban him!!!

Just remember, in your own house, friended house and co house you can detect anyone no matter your detect skill level...for the record, I was on my tamer with 0 detect hidden in my own house! Just target a open floor tile. It will reveal anyone, even friends to the house!

...and if you have a multi floor home, or one real big you can't see it all, check the message on the bottom left side of screen. You may reveal a rabbit or rat and they may be to small and hide under or even beside something. And if people aren't aware by now, clicking on an item give a retrieve choice to make something go directly to your backpack without having to release and pick it up.

If it helps later, you can ban them outside your home if they're on screen and you get their health bar up. I used to hide in our town tavern and ban any troublemakers from our buildings by using the house menu and health bars. The resulting confusion was always funny, because they never saw anyone before it happened, and thought they had to be in the building to be banned ;) It's handy to get them banned from a building so any other chars on the account get banned too. I've met a few who tried to use alt chars after their main was banned. But a bit of patience hiding at home often works.

Good job thwarting the guy though, it's a shame when friends turn, but at least he lost out the most.

A while ago I decided to start a list of scammers names on Atlantic, just in case I ran into any of them a second time. The list was started in 2010. As of today, there are 287 names on that list. Every single person on the list either tried to scam me (none succeeded), or I saw them try to scam someone else. The list is only people on Atlantic, imagine how many more there are spread throughout the other shards.

It saddens me greatly that there are literally hundreds of people in the game, who are willing to steal from, or scam people, for PIXELS. A lot of them don't even seem to care who their victim is, friends, random people or family members, doesn't matter, all they see is a victim and free pixelated gold.

:lame:

I'm sorry this happened to you, Mandrake.
It's really sad to see people behave like this for a few silly pixels...
But I couldn't do a "Trust nobody" policy. Because this is what a big part of UO is made of, (mostly) good faith, (mostly) good honest people and good adventures along with them.
Stay close to your real friends!

No. If you paid attention to the thread, you'd see these were things not involving the stealing skill.
Why does it seem as though you are stalking me?

That being said...thieves have played different roles throughout the years in UO...I have no idea who you are nor do I know how long you've played, but maybe you've heard of the Galads? One can play a thief in UO without having the stealing skill...la

Oh, that's rich, coming from you who once told someone that you'd start replying to all of her posts. Notwithstanding that I'm far from "stalking" you, if you don't want people to reply to you, then perhaps you shouldn't make posts that will encourage a reply.

Good lord, don't be so paranoid.

Of course I've known the Galads, but they were hardly "thieves." The originals never billed themselves as anything but looters, remember?

I have a rares museum. Several items in there I wouldn't even consider taking 100 mill for. Every time I set one of those things down to lock it down I fully realize someone could be standing there ready to snatch it. That's the game. Is anyone *really* surprised by this?

When you have a place like Trammel, there will always be some who will try other ways of evil playstyle. I'm not saying it is ok, just that Trammel code do not make it to happy safe land.
About the Mandrakes friends trying to steal from him are not ok in my book. Even thieves don't steal from friends. Always be careful, who you consider a friend.

i dont know if it was before the board crash but Rico had a post (he's a thief for those of you who dont know him) about his idea of the perfect thievery would be to get someones password and steal their whole account. essentially saying that this is just another form of play style.

as you can imagine some did not believe this was a good style of play.

The game for years has had such types who claim they're "roleplaying" this and that. Perhaps they can test EA's indulgence and stream a lot of unmentionable things in global chat, then claim they're RPing coprolaliacs.

LOL considering some of the stuff I've seen in Atlantic's global chat they could said they're RPing a fertilizer factory or cow with scours! LOL

You know I was thinking while I completed my Accounting assignment, all too often the excuse "that's my play style" has been used to defend ******* behavior. I won't name any names but I can remember a thief who's actions were SO BAD that he caused the dev team to have to put in a patch because of him. He defended his actions by claiming "It's my play style". Manny, my friend, I'm glad you didn't get ripped off, too bad it wasn't fel or Seige you could have extracted some justice. What sticks in my craw is that he'll probably try that on someone else and defend it with the ubiquitous excuses of "It's my play style" or the even more annoying "It's just a game". Neither one excuses a lack of a moral compass.

P.S. for the record it was not Rico. Rico maybe bad but he still has a long way to catch up to the thief I'm talking about.

UO reflects real life. Better to learn your lesson over a game icon than an inheritance, a car, or something equally valuable. I had an Aunt we had to follow around the house or she would pocket everything she could get her hands on, lol.
