How about propmote news reporters to channel admins and move pvp talk to proper channels? Also direct other chat...

Its very annoying when the pvp starts, they need their own channels.....

I saw what you said in gen chat on GL...and what the predictable response was

But Stratics has nothing to do with the way the game is run. Nor should it, quite frankly.

If there were moderators, chosen my Broadsword, they would have to be under a very strict set of rules.

LMAO you are talking about in Game, LOL.

leave General chat and create your own channel if it really bothers you and have all your friends join you there, Then you can talk all you want without the infantile players making ridiculous comments, OORR jut block them and you will never have to see hat they have to say ever again. I have a bunch of the weinies on siege blocked and I never here them whine even when I provoke them:whip:

This will probably never be added to the game for the same reason why EM's no longer have the ability to squelch people, eventually someone is going to abuse their power and keep moving people they dont like to the new channel to prevent them from selling stuff, or just to harrass them.

If they could find a way to avoid that problem, It would be a great addition to the game though.

They'd need a team of moderators to cover the channel over all the shards 24/7. I'm not sure it's worth that expense.

I turned general chat off. It does give the impression of being Toddler's Online, rather than a proper game chat. What makes me laugh is the constant using bad language like OMG we're being soooo offensive and shocking, and we're such tough guys for stringing naughty words together. It's no wonder they're whining about losing all the time, if they talked less they'd be able to cast in a straight line.

I honestly think they aren't real PvPers, they're sat in Luna smack-talking their little fantasies in a wee huddle of fail. My guild never said a word while we were fighting, then afterwards we were too busy planning the next scrap to care about the previous opponent's mother. Happy days :D

The chat just needs some overhaul. You should be able to turn on/off which channel you want to read. And each channel should have its on key bind to write in. If they add a pvp channel, you could turn that off, but still read help, trade or general chat.

I can see why the OP has made this post and whilst I agree with the sentiment I can't imagine it will ever happen unfortunately.

The inane PVP chatter is a problem I have experienced myself to such an extent that I now use the Help Channel. There one can relax and sometimes contribute by helping new players.

It is regrettable that the PVP contingents appear to think the amount of bad language they can use is equivalent to them being recognised as a real badass PVP'rs, and that saying how great they are makes it true. Being immature they fail to recognise that if they were that good there is no need to say so. Just like fame really , if someone is described as the being the famous -------, they aint, real fame only requires a name.

Still all the posting in the world isn't going to stop their chatter so we will all have to find our own solutions. I have found mine.

You dont join a channel in my idea. There is just one kinda. But you have different key binds to write in help, general, trade, etc.. So every channel written in comes together in just one to read. But you can turn off incoming channels cause there is too much crap written or no stuff interesting you. So you can turn off for example general chat for some time or forever if you want and still get the messages from help and trade channel. Atm everything runs in general chat and people in help channel, especially new players dont get the love they should get. And nobody writes in trade channel. Its done in general as well.

Ability to join more than one channel at once would be more welcome..
General is only cannel with any life in it. Nobody wants to trade or do trash talk in some empty channel.

A few facts:
News reporters are volunteers for Stratics. They do not work for Broadsword and while the UO part of Stratics does it's level best to support UO, it isn't a part of, nor employed by, Broadsword either.
Nominally problems in General chat fall under the aegis of the GMs.
At one time I put forward the idea of having a distinctive chat for pvp players. The idea was rejected totally, part of the reason for the 'trash talk' in general chat is the shock value of annoying other players who dislike it.
I use 'help' chat on Europa. We actually use it to help new and returning players, and because there's a group of us Vets who hang out there, these players can find the help they need.

Sadly General is where you need to be if you like to help newer players. NO ONE is ever in the "help" channel and new players quickly learn that General Chat is where to go. This is also where to go if you want folk to join you for a circle and it's also the place to be if someone is announcing they have keys to a run...

So if you want to join in anything going on or help folk..... General Chat is where it's at.... However..... that seems to also be the Fel act like a third grader and talk like one too channel... so if you want to do anything you have to put up with the 3rd grade conversation of a bunch of peacock wanna-be's..... and listen to them pimp and strut and fan their feathers as they try to be the big bird on the shard. Or cry about how some other kid in fel pushed their face in the sand at the playground. At anyrate it sounds like listening to a bunch of third graders from some district where church and manners have no meaning. So it's interjected with sex smut talk because all the kids there have learned to talk and insult one another from a bunch of filthy sailors visiting a house of ill repute.

Sorry to hear that on the shard you play it is that way. On Europa your comments certainly do not hold true. I have already stated that I use the 'Help' channel as does Petra and a few others. New players certainly use it and as often as not get the help they are requesting and the bonus is - PVP chatter no longer bothers me.

I have both the Help channel and General channels open on LS, and General channel is where everything happens. The problem with that, it leaves a very bad impression for new players who read all that garbage.... which really (usually) isn't as bad on LS as other shards I've been on.

I use gen chat. I love the banter from the pvpers .. But before gen chat i would always hang in fel yew and must be used to it.

Sometimes its a bit.much... Should be a pvp chan. But... UO is about freedom and I welcome that.

According to the terms of service, "bad" words (cursing) is only allowed in regular overhead chat, not chat channels. so your only option is to report the offenders and let the gms decide what to do with them.

The chances are good that people coming to this game are used to it from World of Warcraft anyway. The chat there is as bad as anything you can read in public, with almost no moderation--unless someone is stupid enough to use one or two prohibited words, and we know what those are.

Even 'bad chat' offers signs of a living game and vibrant community. I played loads on ATL two summers back. Nowadays, in comfortable lull of Europa chat I surprise myself by really missing the absurd, endless pvp trashtalk taking place in ATL through summer of 2012. I loved the idea of a dozen 30-something guys endlessly trolling one another with few thousand variations of " I got u!!!" "Naw u didn't!!"
Young at heart and all that. : D

IMHO PvP consists of:
90% smack talk in general chat
9% running
1% actual fighting

And yeah, it can get very annoying to having to read all that cursing, insulting, calling names, bullying, bragging and what else.
My ignore list is full of such ppl.

1.) We should be able to join multiple server-wide chats like General, Help or a PvP-channel. Should be part of every good MMO.
2.) PvP-flagged chars should only be able to read non-PvP chat channels for up to 2 mins after the PvP-flag wears off.

With both features in place, they could still read general chat while simultaneously being able to write in a pvp-chat. The 2 mins would ensure, that they will actually use the pvp-channel...

Help Chat on Atlantic is usually packed with good folks that will gladly help others. We try to chase out the d-bags that pop in by reminding them, "Ah yea bro, that guy ur smack talkin' cant see a word cause %&ktards are all in Gen Chat." And of course, they promptly switch over.

Help Chat on ATL FTW BABY :danceb:.

PS. **Warning : I've heard STDs and communicable diseases run rampant in most shard's General Chat so enter at your own risk.**

Since there will never be any chat mods.... do wut I do and put the shttalkin kiddies on ignore. I don`t need to hear anything morons like that have to say, even if later they may be selling something or trying to talk to me. Its their fault their there. I have little patience for nonsense like that from grownass adults.

Add every pvp shttalker to ignore on your chat and life will be much more enjoyable.

When Global Chat was new, during its testing phase, there were distinct "General-Trammel" channels and "General-Felucca" channels. The default was "General-Trammel." When the smacking started in that channel I would remind the combatants that they were in Trammel and, to my surprise and delight, most of the time it'd quiet down. Presumably they decided that the idea of smack talking for Fel stuff in the Trammel channel was silly.

And they were right.

My proposed solution long-has been simply to return to the testing phase system. It won't stop the intended annoyances (ultimately nothing can) but it'll stop the unintended ones.

From EM events to Gen Chat I have such a list of folk on ignore it's not even funny. Yes it does make life more enjoyable for me. But sadly there are some folk who can't put people on ignore because they run things. Kinda hard to have folk on ignore that you might potentially need to do business with.

Sometimes at EM events I miss hearing some things because I have so many on ignore I sometimes can't tell what is being discussed. It's not always a solution.

Also people returning or new players probably don't know how to put folk on ignore yet. And is that really how we want them to see our shards and the game?

It's the same in a lot of games. It's what happens when you put humans in a competitive environment where they're basically anonymous. It perhaps isn't as impactful in other games because the "general" chat often isn't server-wide. It's general to the area that you're presently in. So you could have FeluccaGeneral, TrammelGeneral etc. and perhaps a global Trade channel when in cities.

That might not work so well becuz UO has low-population though so I can see why they made the chats shard-wide. Being able to join multiple channels would be a good thing. Heck, being able to private message people would be better becuz then they could smack talk all day in privmsg if they wanted. Wouldn't eradicate it entirely but it's a start.

I think you should be able to simply right click a user's name in the chat and select "Report" too, which sends the log to GMs. If people actually started incurring infractions and 48hr/1 week bans for the nonsense they post in the chats which probably should be moderated then they might think a bit harder about whether behaving in such a manner is a good idea.

Your forgetting Reported! ;p okay sorry, had to make a tiny joke, I do agree stuff can get out of hand, and there is several options, turn chat off completely, create a channel, or put the people on ignore. Not much people can do unless they say something bannable.

I miss the old IRC-style system where you could create your own channels and PASSWORD them to keep random people out if you wished.

The ideal solution would to be to add that functionality to the current system, as well as forcibly shoving those in Fel into their own channel. You'd have to allow people to be in multiple channels, but the Fel smack talk doesn't need to be shard-wide. Nobody cares who pwned who, who ran away, who's a noob, or who did what to someone's mother last night, etc... It turns more people OFF UO then most other annoying things combined.

Lets see, here is what I have on the subject of Chat updating:

1) Expand to 100+ name for ignore lists

2) Include an automatic 1 hour, account bound kick (to avoid them switching toons & continuing) from chat upon receiving 20 counts of spam que paging from 20 unique player accounts.

3) Separate General chat channels into facet specific channels, & auto connect/disconnect to each chat channel upon entering/leaving a designated facet

Example: I enter Felucca facet, & General chat now switches to Felucca General Chat, so on & so fourth with each facet.

Btw these new Chat kicks shouldn't put negative marks on an account, just a harmless temporary kick to give the player time to 'chill out' while potentially lowering a bit of text spam for an hour. After the hour is up, the potential to be kicked resets to 0/20 spam que, only Broadsword staff can view this number. Also if the player hasn't typed anything in chat, their player name won't quality to receive any of the 20 spam que pages. These options are self sustaining & harmless, but could prove useful.

Not fond of the spam idea, as that could kill announcing events if 20 people decide to be an ass. Which, sadly, is a guarantee in UO.

To combat the gold spammers, the ban hammer needs to be swung freely, swiftly and harshly. There is no excuse.

Glad this got to a positive thread. I didnt mean to offend or say anything bad.

For me, I like to stay in general chat - that means general things to read and say. But - when the time comes, my screen is flooded with spam of who are the best and worst - who ran and who got ganked etc... Sometimes that is too much information, and i just log off the chat. But, on most shards that is the best channel to get in contact with peoples - or ask for help.

I dont have a really good suggestion to solve this, but I am getting very tired of it. That is the times i sometime just log off.

This is just so typical of Stratics group thought. Hey while the dev team hasn't given us any new content in a while lets divert what limited effort they can to watching gen chat. I can't turn leave the channel, whoops yes I can. I can't ignore certain people if I want, wait I can do that also. BUT OMG I REALLY WANT THIS POLICED, cause I can't do it for myself.

Don't forget that PvP players might feel the exact same way about every 20 mins something like "waiting for a 6th level at brit" or "selling yesterdays EM item" or "I have a key" or "leave me alone at this spawn I want everything for myself".
