Anyone playing UO on 4G Wireless?

I am moving across country to a spot in the mountains that only offers 4G wireless for internet service. The line of site is about +10 miles, and wonder if the connection will be playable. Anyone have internet like this?

Thanks

It really depends on how good the signal is and what you like to do in game. There are "Wireless Signal Boosters" that you can get someplace like Best Buy that will help strengthen the signal for you. But for hardcore PVP - I would question if it will be good enough. It's worth a try.

Thanks, Tazar... I currently have one for Verizon, but a search shows generic ones available not tied to an account - so that's a good suggestion for boosting signal strength. $115 to $210 - yikes!

I'm more wondering about whether the over-the-air pings will make the game unplayable.

3G hsdpa is perfect for non fighting activities.
pings can be lower than 80 ms, over than 150 ms for trans-atlantic destinations.
you should be able to kill artic ogre lords with no problem :)

For the record, I can't PvP anyway but...

I have greater difficulty keeping up in PvP situations on 4G. I connect to UO via 4G when traveling and I can do any other activity including more difficult PvM.

Are you on a high part of the land or low part where you are moving to? If you will be in a valley and trees and such blocking you may have some issues.

I have cable internet at 107 Mbps so not sure how the 4G service works. I do have friends that have bought boosters for their 4g services that live outside of the cable internet providers area.

Good thought... the house is in a valley below the level of the road, but the roofline has a direct line of sight to the mountain where the broadcast antenna is. A receiver is already on the roof, so I know that service is available.

Ah you may not have that much of an issue at all. Unless heavy game play with heavy graphics you should be OK.

I've played UO on 3G with no issues before. Hell, I played TF2 on 3G with no issues beyond forgetting my mouse at home.

I've done it with 2 or 3 bars (of 5) in Canada; it's ok for shopping, but I was seeing 241+ pings... I wouldn't use it for going into a fight...

And lol, Aran, aye, always the first thing I forget to pack when I travel. :p

Total Setup is more than a grand, but its worth it. About 15 Mb Down and Up Latency of ~ 70 to servers around me.

Thanks for the info.
No chance of me spending $1,000 on a new setup at this point. The available service has a ~3MB down limit available (more than enough for UO); it's the latency that had me wondering. So, your information is encouraging.

The Router is 2-3x more expensive than most of the other ones that support the 4g wifi Cards, but this one only loses connection 1-2x a day vs 8-10x on the others.

I've only used 4G on my phone but it always seems to have high latency when I use speedtest. High speed for sure, but 200+ ping. I wouldn't do much gaming on it.

200+ ping is the norm for me with 170 to 190 ping days being good days (nearest UO server is over 6,000 miles away, so...), and I do a lot of PvM, so I know it is doable.
But I wouldn't bother with PvP with that latency.

It's adorable watching people talk about how unplayable games are with a mere 200 ping. Looks like a lot of people didn't play much on dial-up back in the day!

Yes, presumably there are at least a few who never have tasted the game at high pings, never did tricks like optimizing MTU in the hope of achieving lag-free trotting (never mind full mounted speed!). Even for old-old-timers who did play the game on dial-up, it's relative as we got used to moving at the speed cap.Japanese shards feel so slow to me today, though I move faster on them than I did on close U.S. shards with 56K and 300+ ms pings. I didn't dare venture into Hyth 3 above 300 ms, or PvP against guys using college dorm broadband, like today I wouldn't want to try a champ spawn or Exodus if my cable's on the fritz.
