Logrus is gone? Man... when did that happen?

So sad to see such great people leave the development team... So happy for them they have found a new home!

I was selfishly hoping that Draconi would be picked up by Portalarium for Shroud of the Avatar, but the list of people on the Shards project has me interested and following it to see what they come up with.

I have to say that seeing the big names (Garriott, Draconi, Chris Roberts, Smedley, etc) all going independent is a great thing in my book.

Guess we'll see who's loyal to what dev when all 3 games are running between RG, Drac or keeping with the original UO.

Not gonna lie, I'm gonna have to try Shards out.

Wow I read about Shards but missed all the naming of those involved.

I checked out Shroud of the Avatar is it and to me, seems to win that game, you'd need to spend minimum $11,000. (The highest tier of supporter).

Don't want to play a game that I have no chance of winning.

Don't go there Shards!

What do you consider "winning" Shroud of the Avatar? Really, the only amount you need to spend on SotA is about $30-40 (with referral bonus and Alienware $20 bonus, that puts you in a decent position to get the game and a few extra goodies) to be able to access it. The rest is simply extra goodies that have a limited impact on the actual "winnable" part of the game. Most of the $10,000+ tier is real life perks such as meeting the SotA team and Lord British, touring his home, and getting an original physical copy of Akalabeth, none of which are needed to "win" SotA.

Do you have to live your life out on Shroud of the Avatar without a land and house unless you are rich in real life? Looks like it to me, I contributed, now I wish I hadn't.............especially now that I see this happening with some of my favorite people that used to be at UO.

Sounds like Shards might be a crafter's paradise, if I can guess where they're heading with the Minecraft inspiration.

Nope. you can get a house in SotA using ingame currency. The difference between the Pledge houses and getting on via ingame resources is that the Pledge houses are "maintenance free" while the houses bought via ingame currency will have a certain maintenance/tax/upkeep attached to it that you will have to pay (also with ingame currency/resources).

I think Shards and SotA are fairly different from each other to be non-competitive (other than for player time). SotA is a non-subscription one time buy in with some "cash shop" items on the side to help fund the project, and it's not yet known what funding model Draconi and crew have in mind for Shards.

Also Shards seems to be more patterned after UO than SotA, and if I read it right, could be what might happen were UO to sanction player run servers. Also as someone put it... Shards looks to be at least 2 or 3 years out since all they have is a couple of concept images and a few ideas. SotA is due out in October of this year and is already holding monthly Early Release (Pre)Alpha tests.

As for UO in this picture, a BIG step is being taken with Vendor Search, so kudos to the Team for that, and I hope the move to Broadsword even if they're still "under EA" helps remove a lot of the corporate management that (IMO) has hurt UO.

My post was a satire about the way in which every new announcement of a new game creates expectations that said new game will be a UO killer.

It depends how deeply they worked on UO. I'm sure if someone did the same thing day in and day out for years they could redo that work in their sleep. For all we know, they could lurk these boards to see what the players here have been denied and deliver on that.

I've got my hopes up though and will definitely try it if it looks to be based around pvp.

Supreem, Draconi, Phoenix/Vex, Logrus... I'd say a group that worked rather deeply with UO. Supreem was one of the main client programmers, Phoenix/Vex was around when UO began and came back for a while a few years back, Draconi ran the Events Arc which included the Ophidian Invasions, Ricardo, Inu, the leadup to Kingdom Reborn and was one of the leads on Stygian Abyss... yeah I'd say they have a bit of depth in regards to UO.

Well, nothing has been said about PvP specifically, but they're planning on doing something to allow the players to create their own worlds and "connect" them to the system, so I'd assume that some of these worlds WOULD be PvP-based depending on who builds them and how.

It's something to keep a watch on and I hope the best for Citadel... they're good people.

Minecraft really has changed the world hasn't it? That being said, I look forward to both Shards and SOTA, but I have a feeling both will struggle against games like Life is Feudal, Star Citizen, The Repopulation, Gloria Victis and especially Everquest Next and Everquest Next: Landmark which is right on the horizon and is turning out to be a pretty solid mix of a sandbox MMO and minecraft.. If the devs of Ultima Online were to retire the classic client, they could do wonders with a full 3D client, UO like Minecraft, EQ: Next and games like Planet Explorers, Space Engineers, Miner Wars 2081, etc.. Are entirely voxel based, Ultima Online also uses 2D voxels, UO could easily be converted into a 3D voxel game should they retire the classic client.. The problem I don't like about the Enhanced Client and even other 2.5D clients before it (except for Kingdom Reborn which was amazing looking) I have not liked ANY of the artwork.. Graphics don't bother me, even though I wanna see a high-resolution UO, it is the artwork that is killing me..
