Confused by existing Guides....

I tried to get through the reading of the sticky Guide for new and returned players as well as several other threads but the more I read, the more I get confused......

Is there a more linear walkthrough like how to proceed from step A all the way down to step Z to get such a template done with all skills, gear and so forth ?

For example, starting from the step A : choice of race. Which is best to pick and why ? Human, Elf or Gargoyle ?

Then, following with step B, working up the stats: Intelligence, Dexterity and Strength. What should they respectively be for best results and why ?

Then, following with step C, determining which skills to pursue and to what level.

And so forth, with step D being what gear should be seeked, piece by piece and with what modifiers so as to achieve the best results....

The problem with the existing Guides for me at least, is that depending on what I read, somewhere I read that the best skills should be some, somewhere else I read that they should be some others... And even when I read on different threads about the same skills being suggested, often the level of those skills vary and quite some.....
For example, some suggest to bring Chivalry to like 60, some others to like 80, some even all the way up to 120 !! And that is only just an example, not to mention other skills.......

Some say pick swords, others say fencing, others say macing.........

Nothing is linear, it varies widely depending on what I read, and I find this confusing.

How can I try to make some linear sense in all of the info so as to try build up a really effective PvM template ?

Thanks.

There is no the best template and there is no the best way to train skills.
An optimal char for champion spawns differs from an optimal char for peerless bosses. An optimal char for group playing is differ from an optimal char for solo playing. Some templates require a massive gold investments while others don't.
The fastest way to train is to buy SOTs. But even if you have 1bil gold it may not be the best way. A character is not limited to skills and stats. You also need to know how to play.

I remember when I crafted a very good suit for some new player that invested real cash to get gold. And later he said me that my suit is bad because he even can't kill a paragon balron. While I myself farmed para balrons with under 100 macefighting using a training suit that has 100 LRC.
The best way to get experience is to start fight as soon as possible. But if it's your 10th char than may be better just to get skills as fast as possible.

To a new players I suggest to start from a classic warrior (macefighter) or ABC thrower. When you get more experience you will decide what kind of character do you want. At this point re-read the guide and adjust your character.
120 mace and 100 tactics/anatomy/healing/bushido/parrying/chivalry is a good starting point.

I have wrote about Chivalry in the part 3 (skills and virtues):
EOO is very important when you haven't a proper Slayer for a boss (Peerless) or aren't able to Honor it.
If you are going to use mainly EOO and CW than 90-100 Chivalry is usually enough.
You need 120 Chivalry and 20k karma if you are going to use DF to get stats.

60 chivalry was enough before it was patched few years ago. Now days 60 chivalry is pretty useless.

Here is an example of how to start:

Thanks a lot or the kind answer, I can understand all of the complexity of variables but I was hoping that at least a few points "could" be set as firm because really a "must have" when making a warrior....

The race to choose, for example. Ain't there a race among those possible that would be the best pick ?

Say that a player wants to solo Peerless bosses, what would be the "must have" to seek as in regards to skills, stats and modifiers ?

Don't choose a gargoyle if you want to be an archer. Don't choose human or elf if you want to train throwing
Everything else is down to personal choice and playstyle.

65 Chivalry is the point where you have 100% chance to Sacred Journey (same skill investment as Magery:Recall), but no need to carry reagents, wear LRC, or equip Arcane gear.

Other than that, I agree it is best to have closer to GM Chivalry for use during combat.

Thanks, but what about the specific "race bonuses" ?

Like for example the JOT for humans, or the "berserk" ability of Gargoyles...
Which of the race specific bonuses best fits with a warrior ?

Well, I don't know....

My feeling would be, that the Gargoyles' "berserk" ability could possibly make them the best race fit to be warriors but is that so, really ?

I am not so sure that it is subjective as to what race best fits a warrior, perhaps there does is a race that best gets the job done as a warrior ?

It is my opinion that the only advantage there is to being a gargoyle warrior is if you are using the throwing skill. For close combat, I would take an elf or human.

Could you please explain why ?

If I read what the berserk bonus means : "In situations of great danger, a Gargoyle’s natural ferocity will take over, granting speed and power. Once a gargoyle has lost 20% of his/her health, he/she gains 15% damage bonus and 3% SDI.This increases damage another increment for each 20% additional damage (maximum 60% damage bonus and 12% SDI)" it looks to me how well this could fit with a warrior type....
Not to mention also the Mystic Insight ability which also gives an extra +2 MR bonus which always helps when looking for that Mana pool to use special moves.....

How would a Human or an Elf do better than a gargoyle as a warrior ? What would be the underlying logic for that ?

Berserk grants extra damage at the cost of defense... For a warrior, I am pretty sure the goal most of the time is to avoid taking damage or to heal it as quickly as possible. At any rate, the Berserk property applies to throwing as well. As for human or elf, I much prefer riding a proxy or armored swamp dragon if I am going to up-close and personal, as well as avoiding damage as much as I can through weapon skill and DCI.

As Merus said.. For human/elf you have the added benefit of being able to ride an exceptionally armored swamp dragon that adds to your defense (close combat or otherwise). A gargoyle cannot ride a mount.

I think the key to your difficulty is in trying to make "linear sense" of a non-linear role playing game.

Ultima online is organized confusion at best. It truly is a Role playing game. You can make cookies or armor. You can just hang out and sit at a bank to gossip. Or emerge yourself in your character and be the best stealthing, ninja thief, britania has ever, not seen.
It all boils down to play style. Patience and talking with like minded folks. There just are so many options for a character.
10 years ago I had a swordsman called Conan. Now I am happy with my miner. It's all about play style.

In your guide for warriors, you say that 60 is needed, so should it be topped up to 65 and reduce necro to 94 for a Sampire, for example??
No can do. You need at least 99 Necromancy to cast Vampiric Embrace for a Sampire.

PS: Although you could use +Necromancy jewelry...

5.3.3. Sampire

Sampire means Vampire Samurai. Sampire uses Vampiric Embrace to heal. It leaches 20% of damage.

Core (694 skill points):
Weapon 120
Tactics 100
Bushido 120
Parry 60
Resisting Spells (Anatomy) 100
Necromancy 99
Chivalry 95

This is the most popular template.

Offensive example (734 skill points):
Weapon 120
Tactics 120
Bushido 120
Parry 60
Anatomy (Resisting Spells) 120
Necromancy 99
Chivalry 95

Defensive example (734 skill points):
Weapon 120
Tactics 100
Bushido 120
Parry 100
Resisting Spells (Anatomy) 100
Necromancy 99
Chivalry 95

My sampire combines offense and defense. With one ring she has 115 Tactics and 115 Anatomy, with another ring she has 50 EP and 120 Parrying.

Note: There is no much sense to be a ranged "Sampire". A melee Sampire is able to stand toe to toe against almost any monster. Being ranged just means you leach less mana and need 40% more SSI to get max swing speed (a composite bow has the same dps as a bladed staff). Compared to an ABC archer you get a powerful leaching ability (that you usually needn't) but you lose versatility.
I don't see Necro in your template? I assume you just forgot to list it.

Here is my sampire template:

120 Weapon skill (usually run mace fighting, but I have swords on a stone)
120 Bushido
120 Resist/Anatomy
120 Tactics
99 Necro
80 Chiv (+15 in jewelry for 95)
61 Parry (to reach the skill points for the lower mana cost specials)

Artis I use are Conj Robe, Conj Trinket (or mana phasing orb), Crimson, Tinker Legs, Mace & Shield glasses.

Based on where you look like you are on your template, I would recommend a demon slayer double axe and hitting the demon mini champ (sounds like you've been there) until you get a couple sets of tinker legs. Use the first one in your upgraded suit and sell the other for some spending gold. Its been a while since I played much on Sonoma, but if Fel despise is quiet during your play time that would be a good place to try for some powerscrolls. Even with your current suit and skills you should be able to manage a Baracoon with a little time. With the Blackthorn artis you should be able to get the robe, crimson, and glasses (get them as a metal helm). Would go for the mana orb in your next suit over the primer, but thats a personal choice... I think the 5 DI is much easier to get back than the HCI and LMC.
Here is what I mean

Berserk bonus doesn't increase your damage output... (if you have 100 DI on your equipment).
In the part 1 I wrote in details how damage is calculated.

No one but you can tell you what would best suit your playstyle. I would suggest you take advantage of test center and try it out for yourself. Equip them using the 'give arties' command and the free clean up points on test.

Corwin, What i dont understand is where you are getting the extra 14 skill points from? Being 720 the limit....

This is the most popular template.

Bushido 120
Parry 60
Anatomy (Resisting Spells) 120

Howdy Pops,

Although everyone here is correct in their opinion, I have something to say. Plug your nose, and jump in the water! It feels fine.

Meaning, you have 6 character slots, 7 if you buy the extra. Make a toon. Get him the way you want him to look, go human, you're a human, right? Make him a warrior. Not anything fancy, just a warrior. Do all the new haven quests you can do to build skills. Run around cutting the heads off of mongbats, break the bones of the skellies that run around old town, take all of your pentup frustrations out on the zombies.

Play with the skills some, start off with swordsmanship (you can use swords and axes), tactics, anatomy, healing, resist (or Parry instead), and magery. Nice basic template. Set everything else on your skills to "lock", set those skills to "Up". Don't worry about the stats, just set them up for the time being. While in New Haven, you can get everything up to 50 by buying from trainers and running their quests, so it really doesn't matter....at this point.

Get started, don't worry about what mistakes you might make, don't worry about making the greatest template around, and don't think that you are wasting your time with this toon just cause he aint the best/newest template out there. The idea here is to learn and have some fun. I gave you 7 different skills above. Make your toon, remember you can change him anytime, and quit reading about the 80 different things you can do to change him, read about those skills you give to your warrior and what you can do to increase them.

Once you are on the road to making an excellent warrior with this toon, THEN, start thinking about some changes, THEN start thinking about a new toon made a different way.

Good luck my friend.

Well, a suit may not make a good player but it certainly can help, in an item based game where the outcome of a fight, be it PvP or PvM, is handled and decided by modifiers and numbers.....

So being able (knowldged) to craft a suit with the least mistakes possible, helps in getting able to help through the game play.

That is at least as I see it.
