My kids spend money Clash of Clans - why not here?

Soooo, pretty obvious and wide open question.

The model for the above named mobile game, and how it makes a cash grab, conflict me.

My kids LOVE playing UO...we hook up the head sets, plan a mission, and even kill a member of CREW now and then during the same...whoever that was the other day near my castle knows who we are *grins*

The problem is, they would have ZERO/minimal abilities to start in this game without my help. I am happy to set up their chars, and as they get older they will learn the nuances I have picked up over 198 months, but isn't there a way to get more interest and more money from my kids in THIS GAME?

I mean, let's face it, C of Clans is pushpin to UO poetry (for all my fellow philo lovers).

Kudos. You started them in Fel. Good for you. I didn't play until well after Publish 16, but my nephews that got me started in the game made sure I placed my first house (a small tower) in Fel. They felt I needed the "experience" lol.

My daughter ( she is 9) and I play Clash of Clans on the Ipad. addictive little mobile apps. Plus they have commercials on TV and the internet about it. They are raking in the cash.

UO already has the subscription and cash shop. As many others will claim UO is already raking in the cash.

I'm willing to bet that most freemium game's cash flow beats UO's sub + Origin cash flow 10:1. In most games I've played you can easily double or triple the amount of money spent on a UO sub without even realizing it.

We need to sell wall space in the cities to Pepsi, Nike and Budwiser. The store can sell unique home deco. I could go for a full wall size flashing neon Budwiser bowtie. Harley Davidson FatBoy eth ride would really draw in funds. Sales boost with 1 in 1000 chance the purchase would be a GhostRider Motorcycle like trailing flames ride. Migth get ranger to toss in some funds to ahve a bassboat sold by the local NPC with metal flakepaint sales goldsink.

Make UO free to play, allow one house per account in SHANTYTOWN; lopsided roof, gray patched up board walls, they all look the same, for unpaid accounts (new land mass may be needed), but allow paid accounts to own a house on every shard. I think I could live with that. Get us more players!

Edit: I forgot how everyone would rush to make free accounts and snatch up as many shantytown houses as they could, me included! So would probably require some form of only one unpaid account per computer Mac address, something I wouldn't expect the Mythic team to be able to figure out.

Clash of Clans is greasy fast food.
UO is a five star 3 course meal.
Nice job.

Nobody compared the CoC to UO. Just the model on money making.

UO may be a five star 3 course meal but it's very old, stale and the health food officials would fine EA and have it thrown away :)

Just money models were compared not the game. I hope you can understand that.

UO is a rich in-depth, complex game where mobile apps can be superior to UO in their own aspects, are not so in depth and complex.

if EA were concerned or smart about making money, they could easily increase playerbase by about 1/3 and double income.
They arent tho. EA is a horrible company, mismanaged, putting in just enough effort to stay afloat.
UO isnt around because it makes money.
The only reason EA keeps the UO servers running is as a feather in the hat, for bragging rights that they have the oldest mmorpg.

Im not going to go into what could make UO a living game again in any depth. that would be :bdh:
Free to play option with no house. - crappy house in new landmass for 2 bucks a month.
Houses on every shard bad idea people would close account. 5 bucks more a month for max storage but not max size i think alot would pay. I would.
Revamped, Flowing, and ENTERTAINING new player experience (brand new UO players are Doomed in current uo)
Lots of perks at the store. - Forged metal tool is great. Little perks like 5bucks per stat up to max of 5 or 10 would sell like hotcakes.
Account management / billing would have to be cleaned up.
Allow gold to be sold to origin somehow for very cheap. Origin sells it back for double. This would require one guy being paid about 100 bucks to work half a day. Have the service open once a week.

I have sat back and watched the game dwindle down to a scant few players compaired to the "app" games. They are so sneeky to slip in the treets they know the person would drool over and for pennies.... to hook you in. One comes to mind that every time they have a new adition to the game it gives the non paying player tidbits and the money spenders get a rich list of goodies that pull them in deeper... And they dont even understand they are spending more on a slip of a game then on real meat and potato's like UO.
For those of you who carry those ipads and notebooks everywhere you go..... cramming in every second something is getting weird. there is a comercial for the olympics on about a skier who stuffs every second with training and can spend 5 seconds to rest afther devoting 2 min to his banking on his iphone............Thsi is what you called obsessive in my day. Sit down at the computer and play.. give yourself time to enjoy the day... before you know it you will be wishing you had slowed down to smell the roses...

Today EA has put UO on freefall mode... meaning we have the smallest staff they can squeek away with.. we share GM's with half a dozzen other games. The Origin Store is a joke, as is the account managment section, it was no where near ready for us let alone did we get a toturial on the damn thing before we were thrown in to sink or swim.
UO is a great game dont get me wrong but in EA's eyes we fill a pocketbook for their other more money maker's. Blizzard still pushes Wow, Starcraft, and its other games and supports it with advertizing even on tv! EA seems ashamed of us..at least thats how it makes me feel when i see not 1 ad anywhere and its the rare op-ed article about the game that has some remembering we still exsist..many thought we were gone..as there is no word out that we live.

Our only choice is to push the game on our own... I do my part... what little i can.

Malas is too pretty, Shantytown is the ghetto of UO, we want to hook new free accounts on UO's biggest moneymaker, housing. We let them play for free in the ghetto, but we want them to work their way out and into a paid account.

Therefore Shantytown has to be ugly in an ugly location with lesser benefits of paid housing.

Nice but not max storage.

No customizing.

No movable teleporters allowed.

No vendoring.

No recalling into the area, free players must walk or ride and haul/carry their belongings to and from Shantytown. (But make the new land mass convenient to a moongate and road to make it easy to find for a newb.)

Allowing one house per shard per paid account is perhaps a bit overboard, how about one extra house per year of account age for paid accounts?

^ Idea is to make sure FtPs have so much fun with the game they end up giving their moneys. No customization,no recalls,no nothing is not fun. House customization is one of the most powerful cards in UO's sleeve. Imo it'd be unwise to hold it close to chest til game's over.

...ofc, all we do here is kinda depressing what iffing:l We never gonna get FtP.

I'm confused by what you are asking. Do you want to play a year? $120 minimum. Do you want an advanced character so you aren't spending all year training? $25 per char ($175 for 7 characters, more if you cross-shard). Running out of chars and want more? $20 for 7-chars. Want an ethy so you never have to worry about pet rez? $10 per char ($70 for 7 chars, etc.). Want a way to transfer the skills you've earned/bought? $10 per (and you'd need most likely at least two-three to make it comfortable, easy $30).

Let's see...$120 + $175 + $20 + $70 + $30...easy $415 to spend in one sitting.

EA couldn't even get Lord of Ultima on iOS.

Clash of Clans is fun to start out but when you get to level 6-7 it slows down a lot. You would literally have to spend $25+ a day to grow at the same pace as you started out. The game is a money trap.

No, you're both wrong. There is plenty of money to not worry how they choose to spend it. For me, the point of the post is I would like them to spend time, in gaming, in UO. I don't want to play C of C.

C of C is it's own kind of mindless grind, irregardless of how much money is spent.

The younger kids simply do not know how to invest their time yet in UO, as it either requires me to take them around for another month or send them to a 'guide' web site to learn how to follow/make their own play style.

If your kids are too young to develop their own playstyle in UO then they are too young to be playing UO alone on the internet with total strangers of all ages and perversions.

I don't mean to sound mean but when I first started playing UO my 4 kids also played and I had no clue there were child molesters lurking about but remember, child molesters go where the kids are.

I once caught one person on a female character on test shard in party with my 11 year old son talking about how they knew my son liked his nipples being twisted. After a short conversation with said female character they made remarks that made me think they were a guy in real life.

Then there was this person who claimed to be a substitute teacher at a handicapped school in real life, again on a female character, again on test shard, who asked to see me naked, no biggie, I'm an adult I know how to say no, but this person went on to e-date teen boys in UO, many probably weren't mature enough to say no when asked for naked pictures, I can only imagine.

One of these same boys, ex UO boyfriend of this so called schoolteacher, later asked to see my teenage daughter naked. She was 16 and had her own room and computer and UO acccount and she didn't say no and had naked webcam screenshots flashed around the net. The guy who did that now sits in prison in real life for fondling a child (he was 18 I think when he went to prison). I bet his parents are sorry they let him play UO unattended and meet and e-date some old pervert. Well, I don't think they played UO so I guess they would have never known, and maybe still don't know, that he was being/had been molested over the internet.

UO may seem safe enough since it's virtual reality and hey an e-boyfriend can't get your teenage daughter pregnant in UO it's true but the internet can be very real and very dangerous for children who are allowed to play there unattended.

Freaks abound on the internet and UO. The substitute teacher who asks to see people naked and likes to e-date teen age boys in UO still plays the last I heard, though I transferred off the shard she/he/it plays/played.

I have taken out of the game many sleezeballs who were preying on the little ones..one was not too long ago...
That person went flying out of luna so fast the GMS who showed up at my call didnt give him time to breath.
I wont allow any child to be hurt like that in UO.
So i do see her points.
Most parents who have younger children in game supervise them quite well. This is in Ruppy2 side. You sound like one of the more dilligent parents.
We will always have bad out there in the game world we just need to keep a good eye on our children....
This mom has kept her eye on all our children who pass under her observation.
The bad element seem to sniff a lone child out... and this makes me very angry.
We cant always know where or if our children are on the game. Kids have that nack of doing what they know they shouldnt....

sorry I do understand your question and yes people do go off the topic alot.
My suguestion is find something they like to do in UO.... fishing, mining, t hunts, and work from that angle.
Fishing has alot of quests and can also involve pirates... perhaps hunting pirates and merchant ships ...
Kids like things that move, there are many areas they can find to keep occupied.. remember each child will be different in tastes.
What do they like doing in that other game?
Is there something simmular in UO?

I have never played C of C but it looks like it is very quest-driven. I did play Lord of Ultima, and it looks similar to Lord of Ultima in that you are always tasked to time-oriented tasks, building, and the lot, but then again, Lord of Ultima was nowhere NEAR as advanced as C of C. Fights were completely automated, for example.

Anyway, UO does not offer such a linear quest-driven system. You don't get clear markers for achievements. For example, if you hit 100 tactics, you don't get a message stating you can now issue forth a grandmaster title through the titles menu. Your kids probably aren't responding well to UO because the structure of UO is much more relaxed, and unfocused, and kids generally don't have the attention span if the material isn't accessible.

I'd suggest, like others have said, to focus on a system, such as pirating, crafting/turn-ins, fishing, something they can do together as well as by themselves. Maybe the Covetous waves, too. Unfortunately, though, UO is just different...for better or worse it doesn't have that hyper structure.

I'm not a hundred percent sure what you mean by this, that you work at Walmart maybe?

But just in case you are inferring that I have "problems", my kids don't play UO anymore, or any other internet games for that matter, so as far as I know, I have no more problems than any other person whose kids don't play internet games. They play real life now.

Thanks Lady Storm for trying to protect the younger UO players. 14 and up is the age that UO recommends we begin letting our kids play UO, but I personally would recommend waiting until they have at least a bachelor's degree before they sign up. You never know when a kid will become addicted and there goes the education, maybe not until they move into the college dorm and out of their parents control, but why risk it?

Plenty of time for addictions after the degree.

Generally speaking you won't see the worst predators performing at Luna bank for all to see, they use party chat and I M to get the job done.

Oh well my kids are all out of the virtual world so I suppose I shouldn't concern myself with other people's kids being injured.
