I don't think any rational person can dispute that some players will create an excuse for dying, however UO often (not always) remains a bad example of gamesmanship based on my many years of experience pvping. - More so currently than in the past, likely compounded by some publish changes and having less players in game (sometimes the former caused the latter).
There are few other games I've played (and I've played many games/mmo's of all varieties) where the culture of cheating is so terribly pervasive, easily accepted, (even worse) seemingly free from punishment, and as readily accessible as it is in UO. It even shocks me that I have accepted the same facts while playing with friends, guildies, and competitors. The most common reason for cheating I've heard is essentially summarized by, "They cheat, so I'll cheat also.", and I'll admit I have debated this same view over the years.
I wish I could say it was a minority of players who cheat, but in my experience it has not been so. This could be due to playing on smaller shards the majority of the time, and I hope that other players experiences are not as disappointing as my own, but based on UO's track record of dealing with cheaters (of all kinds) I remain heavily skeptical on this subject.
UO is the only game I have ever had the "pleasure" of hearing, "Wow, their cheats are better than mine. I wish I had what they were using.", and unfortunately I could understand what they were talking about. It is the one of the main reasons I would never recommend this game to any of my pvp friends that don't already play UO, even though it has had some of the best pvp I've experienced over the many years I have pvped. - These last two statements bring me no amount of happiness to write.
