I got an Email: "WINNER" from Mesanna! And I really LOVE my robe! I will keep it :)

I sent in one story on Drachenfels - and no other storys. No other shards, nothing else. But there is nothing wrong with people hat have the skills to write nice stories and the passion to really write them down and send them in... There are sooo many ways to get stuff in this game: by fighting, by trading, by crafting - even by killing others, stealing - scripting and cheating. And I am REALLY HAPPY that they offered this alternative way for us! When I read the call for papers I knew it would be exactly what I would want to do. And I don´t care if there are people who got 4 robes for 4 stories - if they wrote 4 good stories: Congratulations!!! And of course: Congrats, Ludes! Well done!

And OF COURSE you can decide that there are better stories than others: Not everyone who writes a news story will win a Pulitzer Price - why do some people think, only entering 500 words will automatically entitle them for a Robe? How immature - and I would have written these lines even if I wouldn´t have won. It depends on the way you express your love for the game, on passion and on the originality of your story. The stories should capture the spirit of the game - and the spirit is about friendship, love, passion, adventure - its about sticking together, helping each other out, serving the community. THIS is what Ultima means from its very beginnings in the age of text adventures, CGA & EGA-Graphics, etc.

Ultima is about virtues...

...and its not about jealousy, greed, envy, immoderateness... Those that have such begrudging feelings should be ashamed of themselves!

The codes for Europa's winners have gone out today; I personally stand by my own discomfort with the concept of the robes a being limited edition yet tied to an anniversary everyone wants to celebrate, simply because of the discord it's visibly caused above. We live in a time when the real world economy is imploding, where as virtual economies can be technically infinite in generosity... I'd prefer then to give more people reason to escape into happiness than assert the superiority of a smaller number of players. To paraphrase Thomas Jefferson talking about religion, "it does me no injury for my neighbour to say they won twenty Robes or no Robe. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg."

However, as an "Honourable Mention" in the Sudiva contest from the Ultima Forever lead, and now winner of a Robe myself, I want to point out that as a writer, the important thing was not that you won or didn't, but that you told a fascinating story; whether there was multiple submissions (distasteful, but according to my own personal code of fairness only) or false entries (likely, but then the soul of history and literature is usually myth) no one should have gone in not realising that the point for Mythic was to generate buzz around Ultima Online by user submitted content. In this case you were being given the opportunity to keep the lands living by telling the world why you wanted to live in them. In that sense, there was a positive good by however many entries were sent in, and whilst it would be better to publish all of them, because lets face it, any attempt at high literature in 500 words is going to be impossible (and 1000 for Sudiva wasn't quite enough either) but there's always players out there who will be more interested in the common man and his experience anyway... even a badly spelled, incoherent with passion story might find an echo out there somewhere else. And the reward, for you the writer, is not the robe, but the opportunity to reach out and form a connection with those souls... and in doing so, keep one of your own passions alive in turn,

Now if Mythic go the HuffPost route and make hundreds of millions off your work, I'll join you in picking up the pitchforks again. But for now, I hope you all get the chance to get your own robe; and I'm just glad this time I made the finish line; not because I want my 500 words to be better than yours, but that I'm glad someone judged it good enough to tell a touching story.

This was and is my story. There are others that make me smile and more that make me sad as time has lost more friends in this game than I have had IRL but this is the way of the world. Post your best, win or lose.

Most Memorable Moment in UO

After nearly 15 years of playing this game on a almost daily basis I find the project of deciding my personal most memorable moment in UO a daunting task. I suspect for myself though I could narrow it down to about Sept of 1998 give or take a few months. UO was in its most violent and chaotic period with PK’s and Anti’s running the lands. People were doing all sorts on interesting things from forging alliances, building player ran towns, role playing on a scale not since seen and generally enjoying the vast amazing game that UO was and still is.

I was in the dungeon called Covetous which was a dangerous place back then rampant for PK’s coming to kill and loot people on a near constant basis. A small group of players who were killing the various monsters and looting gold, we were not a guild and I suspect no one knew each other in the slightest. Suddenly a random player zoomed by us attempting to leave the area but he stopped to warn us a group of PK’s were coming. At this moment one of two things always happened, you either ran or stayed to die as winning a fight against these organized people never happened but this time was so different it changed my view of the game for ever. The small group I was in stopped killing the harpies and moved deeper into the dungeon to an area where no creatures spawned. A long hallway presented its self and we waited for the onslaught.

I was playing an archer as were another two players and assisting us were two magic casters but at this time in the game people at GM skill level was a rarity so the overall weight of our forces was light compared to the better skilled PK hunting teams. Then the PK’s arrived.

They were a clear group, dressed the same and prepared but we had guts. Our mages casted a pair of fire fields and this stopped the attacking group as the spell was much more powerful than in current UO times. Our archers, seemingly assisted by an unknown force, targeted one of the attackers and managed to kill him in the first few seconds of the fight, AMAZING. We pushed forward and brought the fight which I had never experienced before in the year of UO prior, victory was close. The PK’s regrouped but they were off kilter and the battle raged with arrows, spells and randomness everywhere. We fought and eventually a stalemate occurred to which both sides retreated but the event forever changed my view of PvP in an online game and UO as a whole. Mere moment lasted hours.

Victory, or finally not loosing, changed everything and I only wish that all the other people who left UO during those dark times had the same event occur to them as did to I.

It was magic.

Honestly, I hope they will use our stories for advertising purposes. If it helps to enlarge the player base again - why not? Good idea for me!

Congrats on cheating and winning.

There is no reasonable defense for people who submitted multiple stories.

I could careless about the sour grape argument when something is wrong, IT IS WRONG!

Anyway you cut it, it is against the spirit of the contest and you guys cheated and good thing Mythic is allowing it right?

Wow...Can't people just be happy for someone for a change. So he submitted 4 stories. Can he not have several memorable moments. If you played 10+ years as I have on my current account (12 total), you are gonna have plenty of great memories. Many deserving of being recorded in the annals of UO History.
Congrats Ludes...wear that Robe proudly.

So we should be happy for someone that cheated? That is the main issue here and I do not see any valid arguments offered so far other than its no big deal. This is what is wrong with the world, people letting small things fly that leads to larger things. I could careless who wins, I did not enter at all. What I am not ok with is that other players who submitted only 1 story has their chances significantly narrowed. Whose to say that Ludes would have sent in the story that was picked if he was only able to submit one single story.

I been playing since game launched but does that make it ok if I send in multiple stories when it CLEARLY stated MOST memorable moment. Cheating is cheating, there is not wow can't you just be happy or what's the big deal. All I see is a bunch of people with no principle with regard to how they conduct themselves. UO is suppose to be full of older players that should have some integrity but just looking at all these BS responses I can only come to the conclusion that most just don't give a damn and what does that say about you guys as a human being that won't standup for what is right?

I happen to agree with you on this one, I could have submitted many many memorable moments about my time on Catskills since I began in 1997. I choose to write about my first meeting the pgoh clan back then since they were and still are one of the first oldest longest running role-play guild on Catskills , the other oldest being GOL ,

But it clearly stated Most Memorable Moment which to me like NBG clearly states 1 moment not several.. but then again that's just my 2 cents on how I feel about it... and everyone is has their own opinion on matter and clearly we all agree to disagree. Also notice that Catskills did not put how many stories were submitted like the rest of the shards did....... I wondered why now I know.........

Actually, it does say. It says 'Though we enjoyed all of the entries we received from the Catskills shard, we had to force ourselves to only select half of them.' Exactly half.
Since only one of the 5 selected was written by Ludes I'm not sure what the problem is.

I think it's time we called this one finished
