[UO Herald] Happy Birthday Stratics and Ultima Online

As Ultima Online, forerunner and pathfinder of the MMORPG genre, rapidly approaches it's 15th Anniversary, so too does www.stratics.com, possibly the oldest continuously active MMORPG fan site on the internet.

Why is it the oldest? Because it was launched in October 1997 by Ryan(Den Dragon)Finlay to support this awesome game and its players.

The 'tree' that is Stratics has developed other 'branches' over the years, supporting later games and is now owned by George Vanous of TGN.

The strongest, and oldest, 'branch' is still uo.stratics; continuing its staunch support of Ultima Online over its full 15 year history through comprehensive play-guides and news features on the portal, http://uo2.stratics.com and through message boards at Stratics Forums .

Now, in a move to strengthen this already long established bond, Petra Fyde, Managing Editor of uo.stratics, senior administrator of Stratics Forums and avid UO player, takes the title 'UO Community Liaison'. In this role she, ably supported by a select group of uo.stratics staff and Airmid Cecht,TGN community manager, will form a conduit between the UO team, led by Mesanna, and the player base.

All UO Fan sites will be invited to feed into this conduit to communicate their user's questions and concerns. These questions will be compiled by Petra and sent to Mesanna to be answered on a weekly basis. Fansites should appoint one person to be a contact person for that site and introduce yourself to Mesanna.

Do you have any word yet on what format the weekly responses from Mesanna will take, especially if you are going to be the conduit for all UO fansites? In other words, will she be sending answers back to each fansite directly or through you for the questions that came from that fansite, or will the answers to all the fansite questions she answers that week be published in one weekly announcement on the UO Herald?

I did read it, but I also remember Mesanna saying no to volunteers. Petra is doing work for Mesanna by compiling information for Mesanna, so I thought it was oddly worded.

Petra deserves to be recognized, and I am glad that Mesanna is finally going to communicate on a regular basis with UO players.

Like Storm said, Strategy and Tactics and Statistics (thanks Petra). The founder of Stratics was huge on numbers for UO stuff. I remember it used to have a lot of stats on monsters, weapons, shields, etc. And congrats on the birthday, I don't know of any other sites from the '90s still around that are still being updated. Stratics has changed a lot over the years.

Since many of the fansites talk to eachother, but nobody has bothered being straight up with this yet, I will. One fan site being elevated above the others has the potential for disasterous results for the larger community.

I'm not sure whether to congratulate you or say I'm sorry.

However... I share some concerns with Martyna... about what exactly will be going to Mesanna. Just stuff we put in the ask the DEV's box or will you be taking account of what is posted here and giving Mesanna a rundown of concerns and issues???

Will you be relaying things that folk are unhappy about or just giving her the glam?

I think it's important that Mesanna is given a relay of what folk are concerned about without all the negative hype stuck in... and the paranoia that tends to go along with it. It's important though that she is made aware of things that players are not too happy about... as well as also passing on suggestions and such that are popular. All too often on Stratics there are awesome suggestions and idea's that get bogged down in negative hype and are easily overlooked.

I'm going to venture in here and offer Petra a hearty congrats first of all. Secondly, I hope she'll be okay with me saying that Stratics has provided feedback from this community for years. Years. It had nothing to do with who the favorite posters were, I can guarantee that since much of it was filtered through me at the time working with Petra and staff. Feedback was provided mainly after each publish, highlighting things that were or weren't working as intended and response to the publish. This was not just from uhall either, but throughout the forums so wherever you are posting at you are heard. Petra also kept in constant contact with any immediate issues that came up on the forums.

I think the major improvement here is the goal to have information fed back to the community and act as more of that conduit that has been talked about for weeks. Petra's role I'm positive will reflect that since we have seen her dedication to all things UO grow stronger even when the rest of us dwindled or became frustrated. Looking towards solutions for the community is her strong suit. Stratics is not the only outlet for the community and I hope finding a way to bring that information together to pass along to the UO Team makes it easier to in turn feed information back out to players in an official capacity. So not just giving information to the UO Team but getting it back and providing real answers in a concise manner will make the difference.

I was happy to hear the news from Petra and think after 15yrs of keeping the cog turning, it's nice for her reinvigorating efforts to be recognized as well as the UO Stratics team that does what they do simply because they love this game and want to see it continue.
