I took a newbie there and tested it myself, it worked just fine. You get leather off the Beetles, and you get gold off the orcs and Skeletons. The poison from the Deathwatch beetles can be cured by newbie mages AND newbie warriors by the time they skill up to move onto them. Its not like these things are doing lethal poison to them.
Since when can you cure poison at 50?????? Mages yes Bandages NO.

Well if I read the notes right, they are going to take the non-eferemal drops off the monsters in level three of covetous. Now you can only get those drops, I assume, in Cora's room. This is stupid, and essentially will shut Covetous down. People have already stopped fighting the waves. Those having fun further on down are now going to stop playing the dungeon cause what's the point? Fighting Cora and her minions is OK, but considering how much effort you have to expend to get drops, only the elite player will stop by.

To make a long rant short, if you have fun in Despise, don't let the devs know about it. As soon as you do, they will take away your only reason for being there and squelch any chance of you having fun.
I did not read this to mean they are doing anything with the drops on level 3. Now, if they do I will be very disappointed, but the notes didn't say that.

Yes. Has anyone verified on Test yet? My bet is that the drops are triggered by the same code that awards void pool points. It takes bookoo kills in the pool area to get a drop, less kills in level three, and the least kills in level 4. This suggests to me that the drops are based on the void pool points earned.

I have received two drops on L4 of Covetous and I have ZERO Void Pool points (Ephemeral items just don't interest me). I doubt they are changing the system...or, at least I hope they aren't.

Why are we making such a huge deal about whether or not newbies can do Despise now? Are newbies only allowed to do classic dungeons and forbidden to train/explore the other areas in this vast UO world? Just because us old vets loved training there doesn't mean the new players have to.

The Void Pool is already pretty much forgotten. This new Despise crap, we'll be lucky if anyone still remembers it exists by Thanksgiving. Plus again it just looks TERRIBLE and the interface is an incomprehensible joke.

I wouldn't play this on a freeshard.

2º - Im not a pvper. so i dont go often to fell BUT despise fell isnt changed, so a newbie can do despise as always there.

we must also consider 1 fact: when a newbie arrives to the game start tries to raise the character faster as possible so he goes to golem or any other macroing method... only the old sentimental players was still using despise with their new characters :D

Golems won't earn a newb any gold so they can repair and maintain their armor by buying repair deeds... won't help them learn anything about fighting ...... won't gain their healing... unless they are doing it wrong... And generally are a BAD idea. Also Golems don't work at 50 skill.

I have been playing for exactly one year, so about 9 months ago I was one of those mythical beings, and guess what, I was training in Despise and Old Shame. :p
I got myself my first 200K there and bought my first all 70s, 100 lrc suit with it and I was truly thrilled about that.
So I have found memories of those dungeons.

Neo Shame is still good to train at, if you know the safe spots to lure monsters to. It would be great if the spawn wasn't so thick in Trammel.
Also, cutting through 500 hp earth elementals isn't that trivial for a player with around 60 to 80 weapon skill. For untrained mages, they won't be able to keep up with mana to cast enough spells to kill one of them, so this is less than optimal training experience. But giving them some breathing room would solve that for the most part.

I welcome change for most part, but this Despise mini game will be fun for a while, then everyone will forget about it and move on to the next thing.
And we will be short one cozy dungeon.

Since there's no going back about this change, I just hope that for next publish they will bring a new dungeon at Haven mountain ranges with two or so levels and monsters with around 200 hp at the first level that don't hit too hard, but that can gank a careless one, with some low level neo shame loot.
This will let new players (whenever such mythical being shows up next) learn with their mistakes, like I did in Despise, without being punished too harshly for them, while making some coin to let them buy their next set of equipment.

last newb I saw was dressed better than me and also has more money than me... many of them prefer to buy all the equip and money based on the profiles read in the forum or pay the shops for a full character so they start to play without even care about the training...

In the last 6months or so I've had about 8 folk who were either returning (but starting fresh on new accounts mostly because they can't navigate the website to get their old account back on and can't seem to get any help gave up and are starting all over).. or NEW NEW players I've helped recently.... I didn't give them new super suits... I didn't give them millions in gold... they wanted to start NEW... I do give them direction on where to go to train...

So MY stance is still there.... WHERE AM I TO SEND NEW PLAYERS NOW????????

Ones who actually WANT to play and get the experience themselves without me handing it to them on a silver platter.

I know it's a long shot, but maybe at the upcoming town hall, we'll get a nice surprise and find out the team is going to put a fresh "new player experience" in the game. I somehow doubt it, though, because none of the producer's usual cronies have been on here dropping hints about it or trying to elicit feedback. Everything they've been doing that for has been aimed squarely at bored vet players.

Still frustrates me to no end.

Yeah I cant remember where it was stated, but JSkalski said they weren't actively working on a NPE, but were instead gonna work on retention...

Say what you will, but when you don't add new peeps, and just try to retain the old, that's maintenance mode, anyway you want to spin it.

On the other hand I can't remember ever playing a game because it offered a nice shiny new player experience it's always been what you do in the end game. So I agree on the focus toward retention which would also have the benefit of drawing former players back in. Besides wasn't adding New Haven a revamp of the revamp of the NPE? How much development time should be spent on redoing the newbie part of the game over and over again?

What's missing?

Someone asked about that in May of 2007 and this was the reply:
"New Haven seems kinda buggy and unfinished. Is it going to be improved?"
Yes! We have quite a few substantial improvements slated for a publish next week. Here are some of the highlights:

- Adding quests for Blacksmithy, Ninjitsu, Archery, and Fencing
- Adjusting undead spawn and added mongbats, brigands, animals, etc
- Bringing back Escort quests
- Fixing broken Haven treasure maps
- Adjusting blessed New Haven rewards to be more appropriate for new players

Plus lots of other bug fixes, map fixes, and other goodness!

Which having done a couple of those I know they did in fact add them. If it being unfinished is your argument I have a couple of still missing Virtues I'd like to introduce you to.

What if.... they revamped despise into a complete new player dungeon? I am almost 100% certain the same amount of people would be on here b*tching about how the devs are wasting time adding a new player dungeon. I assume the reason the handful of New Despise haters are so enraged is because of other things bothering them with the game and this was just the newest opportunity to bash the devs.

Bottom line, they added something new to the game, Something we didnt really have before. Many people enjoy it so far (and remember its in TC so its not set in stone). It seems theres about 5 or so people on uhall that feel directly insulted that the devs would ever think of redoing Despise. How long have they been doin revamps? How long have the 5 angry players had to let the devs know that Despise is for new chars and shouldnt be revamped to please the non new characters? How many more dungeons are left to revamp? perhaps we can start a petition or something to ask the devs kindly that the next revamped dungeon project be geared more towards the new characters.

We have 6 facets full of different monsters areas and dungeons, you cannot tell me Despise was the only place for a new character to train after new haven. Orc dungeon isnt bad around 70s skill, the forests between covetous, cove, and minoc have plenty of land spawn for a new character to train skills. So instead of spending the week on Uhall crying about how you cant create new characters anymore, go into the game and look around, you'll find plenty of things for new characters to fight.

There are still many skills that don't have accelerated skill gain quests in New Haven. (The accelerated skill gain quests grant an accelerated gain up to 50% skill within a designated training area and a reward relating to the skill trained. You can also purchase up to 40.0 skill training from certain New Haven NPCs for these skills. ) Here's a list and more information about the ones that are finished, which was last updated in March 2011:

UO Stratics *New* | New Player Quests

(The list includes the 26 skills of Anatomy, Archery, Blacksmithing, Bushido, Chivalry, Evaluate Intelligence, Fencing, Focus, Healing, Hiding, Inscription, Mace Fighting, Magery, Meditation, Mining, Necromancy, Ninjitsu, Parrying, Resisting Spells, Spirit Speak, Stealth, Swordsmanship, Tactics, Tinkering, Tracking, and Wrestling.)

However, there are no accelerated skill gain quests for these 32 skills in New Haven or in Ter Mur:
  • Alchemy
  • Animal Lore
  • Animal Training
  • Arms Lore
  • Begging
  • Bowcraft/Fletching
  • Camping
  • Carpentry
  • Cartography
  • Cooking
  • Detecting Hidden
  • Discordance
  • Fishing
  • Forensic Evaluation
  • Herding
  • Imbuing
  • Item ID
  • Lockpicking
  • Lumberjacking (Note: The quest with Hargrove the Lumberjack in New Haven that requires gathering 60 logs rewards you with a craftsman's satchel.)
  • Mysticism
  • Musicianship
  • Peacemaking
  • Poisoning
  • Provocation
  • Remove Trap
  • Snooping
  • Spellweaving
  • Stealing
  • Tailoring
  • Taste ID
  • Throwing
  • Veterinary
I understand accelerated skill gain quests might not make sense for some of those skills. However, the problem is that for over half of the skills in UO, there's no accelerated skill gain quest in New Haven and if you wish to purchase skill training for those skills, you can only buy up to a maximum of 33.3 in the skill,* if you're lucky enough to find a guildmaster to do the training. In many cases, you can only buy skill training up to about 26.0 or 27.0. (For some reason, in many towns, guildmaster NPCs for certain skills seem to have gone missing in the last few publishes and I'm not sure they ever existed for some skills.)

Also, Sir Helper The Profession Guide in New Haven only references a few guildmaster NPCs, who can each provide a new player with more information about training for a very limited number of "professions" in UO:
  • Alexander Dumas in the Warrior's Guild Hall regarding the warrior profession.
  • Pyronarro in the Mage School regarding the mage profession.
  • Tiny Dupont in the Blacksmith Shop regarding the blacksmith profession.
  • Malifnae in the Necromancer School regarding the necromancer profession.
  • Brahman in the Paladin Training Area in the building connected to the Warrior's Guild Hall regarding the paladin profession.
  • Haochi in the building north of the Mage School regarding the samurai profession.
  • Yago in the building west of the Mage School regarding the ninja profession.
In my book, that means New Haven isn't finished by a long shot and it should definitely get more attention if EA has any serious plans to ever again try to attract returning or new players to UO.

* Edited to add: I forgot when I made my original post that you can purchase training up to 40.0 skill for imbuing, mysticism, and throwing from NPCs in Ter Mur.

Considering those skills are all found on the Advanced Character Token perhaps they actually want to give people a reason to buy them. The rest are so oddball or rarely used there's no point. Now think about this, for ever 1 NEW player there are probably 100 who are returning players. I myself quit for 2 years. I didn't come back for New Haven, I came back to try out SA. Boy was I rather angry to put it politely at all the damn bugs that were still around after all those years as well as a slew of new ones.

The newbie quests in New Haven are fine. They will and do provide a person the chance to gain those skills most needed to advance into fighting modest stuff and collecting some gold. People whom are interested in 95% of those skills listed have already made a gold farming char of some sort and are not looking for the advance except for saving a hour of time.

The revamp does not stop the regular player of UO from making a new char on any shard. I'm sorry but those that are so clouded that they think a new player is such a common event that the dev team needs to spend dollars on them is totally out to lunch. THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH NEW PLAYERS to be worth the effort. This said if they really wanted to spend a few dollars in this direction a REAL WEBSITE with actual information listed at www.uo.com would be the best choice. Simply saying that "UO is nearly 15 years old, it's deep and confusing so here is a few good things to note"(followed up with some common sense stuff about how to play) would go so much farther in helping the rare player than some stupid quest in New Haven which in it's self is hard to figure out.

Sadly this is more of the issue than what Haven can provide. The new guys logs in to nothing. They might fall into your lap but at best you can provide a LRC suit, a mil or two in gold and some chatty advise but what then? A month of taking them under your wing or a website that provides that first month of information that they can refrence back to. Yes stratics does a heck of a good job as does uoguide but they are not the offical site and it's only luck that a person might stumble onto them.

Players > NPE

HOWEVER, there is no excuse for not having a worthwhile, comprehensive NPE should UO manage to attract actual new players. Vet players shouldn't be expected to cover for Mythic's failings, nor could they be expected to stand watch in New Haven 24/7. UO has the worst NPE (which is only available in the EC, btw) out of any MMO I have ever played. Couple that with a nearly overwhelmingly steep learning curve and new players are turned off.

No new players and UO dies. It's pretty simple.

I guess if anyone who currently plays UO wants to try to recruit friends and family into the game, the best advice we're supposed to offer them is to spend the following amounts of money to get themselves into the game and kinda, sorta up and running and ready for adventure:
  • $30 for the Stygian Abyss expansion and one month of playing time.
  • $30 per character for advanced character tokens.
  • $15 for the High Seas booster so they can go hunt pirates with us and try fishing.
  • $12 to get their own large boat for when we're not around to play with.
  • $30 to bump up their house storage and have access to 7 character slots.
  • $10 to get a raised garden bed, be able to brew their own liquor and puke it on the floor, and buy pre-tamed pets at the bazaar.
So, if our buddy wants to get started on a mage, a dexxer, a crafter, and a tamer within the first month, we should tell them to hand over to EA an easy $217.

Oh, wait, I forgot. They won't be able to claim any vet rewards up front and might need a few soulstones. So, tack on another $40 or so just for those. And if they want a castle or a keep, a modest selection of "rares" to furnish it with, a couple of "nice" suits, some resources to train their crafter with, etc., etc., they should plan on spending a couple hundred more dollars at one or two online shopping sites for gold and other "necessities." And if they really want to be smart about stuff and not waste their actual playing time doing tedious stuff like mining or lumberjacking, they should also visit the scripting sites and find out what it takes to become a premium member with access to the latest AFK training methods. Or hand over their account information and another $100-$200 per character to let someone else max out their skills.

It seems that those of us who think new/returning players might benefit from starting out small and learning about the game by actually playing it while training are going at it all wrong! If we'd just change our views and tell newbies and returnees to buy their way into trained characters, maxed out housing, wondrous gear and pets, UO would be in fantastic shape because EA could spend all that money from the newbs on putting in advanced/ difficult/ challenging content for finished characters. The dev team wouldn't have to waste another minute worrying about content for inexperienced, poorly geared characters. And all the online shops specializing in UO items would be so well off that they could sponsor all kinds of contests and events providing awesome prizes and gold!

It would all be just so gosh darn exciting! If we'd all just get with the program, we could ensure for UO such a bright and wonderful future! We'd also be ensuring the continued existence of those vitally important online shops! All we have to do is each find a few gullible friends and relatives with $500-$1,000 just laying around with nothing better to spend it on and convince them to waste it...err..."invest it"...as they try out UO. We'd have almost instantaneous new companions to play with for the next few years, because the vast majority of them would lack the will power to quit and walk away in a few months after "investing" so much money into UO.

I think I've almost convinced myself!! It's such a simple yet ingenious plan, who could possibly poke holes in it? And if they try to, we just have to tell them their negativity is ruining everything for everyone. A bright UO future is within our grasp, we just have to believe....

All right, who stole my "end sarcasm" button? I know it's here somewhere! Guess I need to go find it. Be back later....maybe.

About Steward;
I have tested this new function in TC, It is my first impression;

1.The hair of hair and a mustache cannot be edited.
Worst. It is not mannequin doll, It should be edited.

2.Distribution function
Worse. They throw in an item into a bag, without saying anything.

This new function based on mannequin doll I think, It should be based on Herald (Stay and Greeting Mode) / bartender.
If so, We add some wording for greeting as a Steward. and when guest say keyword, he can giove items with "announce message".

Though it becomes more expensive by having advanced features, I want the Steward here than the current "Test version" Steward.

Additional request;

Bartender system should support 2-byte code message IN FUTURE.

Regards.

Okay, far be it from me to play the harbinger of positivity in this thread, but this post was pretty bonkers.

They should certainly get Stygian Abyss, I'll give you that much. They don't need it in the first week or anything though.

[*]$30 per character for advanced character tokens.
Oh come on. Yeah gee, everyone knows you can't play UO without an advance token to bump your swordsmanship from 50 to 80 or whatever. Gosh that would be impossible. Who could ever do that?

(This pretty much sets the tone for the rest of the post: You're going to pretend that every random silly thing in the shop is totally mandatory and the act horrified when everything in the shop combined costs a bunch of money.)

[*]$15 for the High Seas booster so they can go hunt pirates with us and try fishing.
Who the heck even hunts pirates? And why would you need High Seas to "try" fishing?

[*]$12 to get their own large boat for when we're not around to play with.
Hahaha, seriously? Why on earth would anyone, new or otherwise, need one of those big dumb ships?

[*]$30 to bump up their house storage and have access to 7 character slots.
I've been playing for 12 years and haven't bought anything like this. Acting like it's mandatory for newbies is just lying.

[*]$10 to get a raised garden bed, be able to brew their own liquor and puke it on the floor, and buy pre-tamed pets at the bazaar.
I don't have these packs and I buy stuff at the bazaar all the time. Please get your basic facts in order. And acting like that stupid brewing thing nobody wanted is mandatory is just more lying.

So, if our buddy wants to get started on a mage, a dexxer, a crafter, and a tamer within the first month, we should tell them to hand over to EA an easy $217.
So if our buddy wants to do every single thing in UO instantly with as little effort as possible and also wants to waste extra money on meaningless nonsense like brewing and that big ugly ship by buying up every single thing in the shop, it costs $217. Jeez I'm surprised you didn't throw seven smuggler's lanterns onto the shopping list for your buddy's seven advance tokened characters to banksit with.

Oh, wait, I forgot. They won't be able to claim any vet rewards up front and might need a few soulstones. So, tack on another $40 or so just for those.
What the crap would they need soulstones for when they're just starting out?

And if they want a castle or a keep, a modest selection of "rares" to furnish it with, a couple of "nice" suits
Okay I'm done, this is just nonsense. If they want all that then they just go buy an account from someone.

Okay, far be it from me to play the harbinger of positivity in this thread, but this post was pretty bonkers.

They should certainly get Stygian Abyss, I'll give you that much. They don't need it in the first week or anything though.

Who the heck even hunts pirates? And why would you need High Seas to "try" fishing?

Hahaha, seriously? Why on earth would anyone, new or otherwise, need one of those big dumb ships?

I've been playing for 12 years and haven't bought anything like this. Acting like it's mandatory for newbies is just lying.

I don't have these packs and I buy stuff at the bazaar all the time. Please get your basic facts in order. And acting like that stupid brewing thing nobody wanted is mandatory is just more lying.

What the crap would they need soulstones for when they're just starting out?

Did you even read claudia's post that precipitated mine? Hmmmm.

You quoted Martyna, not Claudia, and neither of them said anything that makes the idea of new players having to run out and buy the Britannia Ship any less ridiculous.

Be back later....maybe.
interesting theory..because I recently came back with naked characters..and zero gold and was given 2 m and a lrc suit from a buddy..equipped my Mage got some gold from shame farmed a few nice jewels...and worked a thrower..and spent 30$ on SA and 12$ on High Seas..zero at any "scripting" or RMT site :/..and never once walked into despise..

Did neither of you catch the "/end sarcasm" comment in the spoiler to my post?!?! Did neither of you even read the rest of the thread, beginning to end, or did you just plunge in at the end?

Of course I don't think people need to buy all that stuff to play UO. If you're new, buy the SA expansion or whatever you can get your hands on and call it good. However, some people seem to think that New Haven's a waste and that new players and returning players should just bypass it by purchasing advanced character tokens. I don't agree, hence the sarcasm.

Will they ever bring back gypsy tents (the ones with the moonstone jewelery)? That was the most fun I've had in UO in years.

There seems to be allot of people complaining that Despise is no longer "easy" to train newb-status characters in. New haven could use slightly more attention (anyone remember the "Loot" dungeon?)
Open it up with a more obvious entrance and add some mobs to it with a quest and done... its right there where you'd be starting off as a noob anyway =D

While the new revamp sounds interesting I have not tried it out yet. but based on the Covetous reward system, and my experiences with it... I think the Ephemeral items should be the rewards you get from killing mobs/bosses, and the rewards you purchase with the dungeon points should be the "real" non-ephemeral ones.

"The greater reward should take more time & effort"

The way covetous is set up, why would anyone bother Defending the Void Pool for points when it takes longer than killing Cora or farming some of the other level mobs to get the real artifacts.

Other than the crafting rewards, I never saw a point to do the void pool other than for the experience of trying it out.

Honestly, never trained in Despise. Incredibly boring there. At the same time, never used Golems. I trained my chars at the graveyards up to about 60 skillpoints (archery, swords, fencing and maces) and then went to the abyss mini spawns. IMHO there is no better place for training mid-level chars than these mini-spawns - for several reasons:

1. Perfect opponents on the several tiers (some quite too easy, e.g. fairies, undead, rats, goblins - but then much better on the second level). I personally prefer the second tier of Tikkitavi: No spellcasting, take much damage but dont deal much...
2. A chance for gathering imbuing regs and getting gold by selling (MUCH better gold source than the old virtue dungeons)
3. In a later state of skillgain a chance of getting arties that sell quite nicely (e.g. ratspawn: void infused kilt, basiliks hide breastplate - got about 4 of each during training the 4 skills. Nice gold source).
4. And funny surprises sometimes: People join you and help you with harder mini-spawns (e.g. Devourer), you find nice stuff in the trash on the bottom of the cavern (slayer-spellbooks, runebooks, spells, anniversary items thrown away by players etc.).

So, I never went to Despise (no gold, no good arties, boring enemies and ugly look down there) - although I know that getting into the Abyss (quests) might seem a bit hard for some players at the beginning. But they will find help in the community, that´s for sure...

Just to get my two cents in:

I'm one of the "nostalgia" players...
I feel like I've been chased away from dungeon after dungeon.

I know there is nothing I can do about it but shake my head sadly and walk away from Despise forever just like I did for Coevetious and Shame and Wrong.
I'm starting to feel that nobody want us oldtimers around anymore.

For the first time in my life I can imagine a UO with everything I love about it being gone.
