nice to have a basement where we can enjoy customising a 31x31 floor layout with walls etc, so we can enjoy the personal touch like custom home owners, but without impacting on the outside appearance

I for one LOVE to customize homes, I live for it.

When I transferred all my stuff back to Origin last week, I had the option to either place an 18x18 or a castle.

While I LOVE to customize, I know that in a short amount of time I will have too many things to fit into an 18x18 so I placed a castle.

I do love decorating castles, I have owned several in the past, but I wish there was a way, without Goza's! To do a bit of customization to them.
Basements, while very cool, would be too hard to implement in my opinion, and making the entire plot customizable would be a bad idea....I see no other option to make them even semi-customizable unless you were able to move the walls around and that's about it.

Basements would be rather cool though

I'd like to see them come up with some alternative floor designs and allow castle/keep owners switch between them. I could see a plantation, farm house with "land/fields", mansion, etc. Be nice to see some variety in some areas of the world where we have tons of keeps/castles pressed up against one another. No changes to storage size, no customizing, just new buildings for that size plot.

Housing customization is one thing UO offers that nobody else does. While I understand lag could become an issue I think this is a wonderful idea and it would highlight the creativity that separates UO from other games.

Wilth a basement, everyone wins, no borg cubes or 4 storey horrors, but a place where castle, and keep owners can enjoy wall times a large place for raised flower beds for example, and not having to worry about the floor layout as it is now

I agree. Whilst I would love a basement in my castle as I have no end of stuff I cant display it would be unfair unless all home owners had the same option.

I don't own a castle, but saying they should not end up with the same level of usable space for their size just seems unfair. All other houses have more levels and since its so hard to get a castle they should get the same size and customization options as the rest of us.

I still don't think Basements would be that "difficult" to code... grab a server... make a large black blank... Then SELL the basement option package... This would include a "teleporter" that would be like a floor tile resembling a hatch of some kind or just a hole... This would teleport you to your new basement plot.... Placed in the vast black nothing...

Basement size would be dependent on the size of your plot. Castles would get a very large basement... which would be a customizable plot with pre-installed perimeter of "dungeon" walls.... What is within those walls is customizable. Each Basement would then have lockdowns based off of the corresponding house size... say roughly half what your home has. Increased of course if you have the increased storage expansions.

Of course you wouldn't be able to place trees or things like that down there that would obviously not fit... No two story objects... But I think it would work fine for adding the ability to have a customizable plot... as well as added storage.

Either base if off house size or allow EVERYONE who buys one to have a 32x32 customizable plot... would be neat if it came with new wall tiles and floors to use as well from the already available dungeon style walls... that are already in game... Perhaps even ones that come with chains... carvings and the like...

I could come up with a dozen or more booster packs... I've given idea's for at least 3 so far... This one and adding a new peerless/champ area to the Underworld are two of my favorites.

Though the Underworld idea would take a LOT of work on the part of the DEV team... While this idea about basements wouldn't be that difficult.

After all those years I still live in a 18x18. I just don't like to not be able to customize, and let's face it I plainly hate the current Castle layout.

While a basement seems like a good idea, it woudln't solve the entire layout issue, and more importantly it would prolly be very hard to code. That is because the way the game is designed you can only have underground/basement on buildings that are on elevated terrain, even if sometimes you don't really see it because the entire area is elevated. If the house is already at ground level the space under it just does not exist in the game so you can't put anything there.

Adding a 20x20 customizable plot or something with same number of lockdowns as a Castle seems more realistic.

Maybe have to have a miner and crafter to do it. The miner digs it up. The crafter builds the walls and surports.

but yeah, like Wizal the Fox said, the problem with basements is how do you do it...i'd think the easiest way to do it would be to create basement space on a separate sub-server, otherwise the terrain could be sorta funky in some places...and separate sub-server space wouldn't be aesthetically what people want

In a way, yes. The way castles seems designed, an 18x18 actually offers a lot more space for decorating. The castle is just spread out over a bigger area with small compact rooms/hallways.

Incorrect statements. Castle owners are not always insanely rich. A lot of them are just insanely lucky to get the spot. Be it through someone being incredibly generous (there was a recent post about someone just like that), through someone quitting, through a spot opening up through IDOCs, etc.

A more accurate statement might be "only the rich can afford to buy placed castles at full market price."
Although I think Luna spots are actually more expensive.

Im not insanely rich I'm just insane. besides I have with the help of friends, have placed my castles, keeps, and helped friends place castles, and keeps by getting on their accounts to place them.
See you dont have to be insanely rich to own a castle, you have to become a Idoc, house placer, and learn the ropes.
Don't judge a person by their castle.

Just make castles and keeps customizable. BUT, you have to place it as a keep or castle FIRST, and then you can't have anything inside the courtyard in order to make it customizable. This way, people still have to get the mil or 500k to place a keep or castle first. Which isn't that big of a deal but when Origin first began, the land rush for castles was amazing since everyone began with 0 gold and no way but to go and get it themselves.

So it's true that you don't have to be rich to own one, just lucky or live on Origin!!!!!

fully customizable castle plots would be a nightmare, imho... a few preset designs? hell yah..... here's mine.........

this wasn't the only design...... a few years ago Kurgan held a contest and there were lots of really great ideas... sadly it was all lost in the board crash, wish I'd thought to save the pictures of all of them

I definately would want my castle to look like that. The courtyard feels so more alive and open and useful (especially if plants and such could be locked down). And the castle areas themselves also feel bigger and more useful.

Send the devs your design and "allow" them to use it.

Hate to bump an oldish post but did anyone actually twitter this and get a reply? or has there been any recent word from the devs or producer regarding either castle/keep basements or some kind of new castle/keep presets?

I did read through all the recnt posts on this subject but couldnt see any 'official' reply.

Considering the amount of new keeps (and a few castles) that have gone up in the last few days, maybe they might be worthy of some attention.

I wonder how many people would be willing to drop their house sizes (like 18x18 down to something quite a bit smaller) if they could retain the same item count or maybe not lose a floor.

Looking at a bunch of the IDOCs I attended, and when I was scouting out IDOCs, I came across a lot of interesting spots that I would be tempted to move to, but the problem was that I would lose item count. I have a couple of houses, but they are not side-by-side. Some of the places I saw, I would love to move to, but I would be going down in item count or number of floors. It would be great because I could have two houses side-by-side, but at the same time I would lose a lot to move there.

I know, I know, if I wanted to move bad enough I would make the necessary sacrifices.

But personally I would much rather have some preset castle layouts instead, with the drawback of having to replace the castle, this will make sure any courtyard obsticles dont mess anything up.
