The Great Name Debate....

So while on Team Speak I realized people pronounce towns differently. So it got me wondering whats the correct pronouncation of the towns of UO?

Obvious Moonglow, Britiana are easy but what about

Jhelom, Nujel'm, Skara Brae, Ocllo etc.

How does everyone else pronounce the "hard named" towns?

Jhelom: je (like the french for I) lome (like a sewing lome)

Nujel'm: Neje (not sure what to compare it too, like nege stressing the g sound lum (like lump without the p sound)

Skara Brae: Scare (like something frightening) a Bray (like Fray)

Ocllo: O (like you'd say an O) clo (like clover)

i like this thread! i always laugh at my friend for pronouncing town names different than i do. but i don't know who's right (of course I assume I am, but i don't really know).
He pronounces Malas like the beginning on molassas (but with an A instead of an O, like malassas) with the accent on the last half of the name. I pronounce it like malice with the accent on the first half of the name. like Alice.
and what about ter mur? does it rhyme with "tare fur", with the accent on fur?

Jhelom- th-lam (like the llam of llama)
Nujel'm- newj-elm (with a french sounds "je" where the j is)
Trinsic- trins-ick
Delucia- del-oo-sha (oo like food)
Papua- pop-oo-ah (oo like food)
Malas - mal-ahs
Hythloth - hith-loth
Skara Brae - skahrah-bray

Fun stuff =)

Hers may be the high-born accent though, where mine is obviously low-born!

*snicker*

I pronounce Brae as "Bree"; it's a Latinate pronunciation, but Latin pronunciations were all over the place in ye olde English. (But my name is Linn-Day and I will fight you if you imply otherwise.)

Papua is Pap-Wa. (As in New Guinea.)

Umbra is Oom-Bra, not Uhm-Bra.

Lenmir (as in Lenmir Anfinmotas) is Len-Mere, and yes, I have reasons to use it in everyday speech.

Jhelom is Jeh-Lom. The -h means that it isn't pronounced the French way.

</coolstorybro>

BUT THE BIG QUESTIONS ARE...

1) Is it TOCK-oo-no (that's how I say it, because it's easier to say "Tokunese" then) or toh-KOO-no?

2) Is it Fel-oosh-ah or Fel-ook-ah?

3) Is it Mess-Ah-Na or The-Dev-Il?

Since it's Japanese based, it's

To - ku - no (toe - koo - noh)

Just as my forum name name is Ba-sa-ra (Bah-sah-rah) not Bas-arr-ah or Ba-sar-a (or, (shudder), Ba-sarah).

very few syllable/phonemes in spoken Japanese (and the syllabic written versions) have more than one consonant sound. The only ones I can think of with more than one consonant with my limited knowledge from my geekdom are ones that end with "en", such as "ken" ("fist"- which is why there are so many martial artists in games and manga named this, as a punnish name), "zen", "sen" (like in the name of the disaster ravaged city Sendai), etc..

When trying to represent western words in Japanese, it can look like someone is getting paid by the syllable. For example, "Spartacus" becomes "Su-pa-ra-ta-cu-su", by one method. Similar results (or occasional dropping of letters to lower the number of syllables) have made what should be obvious words borrowed from English or French almost unrecognizable (especially when someone tries to translate that mangling BACK to a western language). After all, a famous anime example is the Gundam character Sha Aznable (also called Char Aznable), who was named for European singer Charles Aznavour.

So the Tokuno Islands are (Jima being "Island")
Isamu (E-sah-mu - note that this is also the name of the protagonist of Macross Plus)
Makoto (Mah ko toe - anime note; Sailor Jupiter's civilian name in the original version of Sailor Moon)
Homare (Hoe-mah-rey)
with the city of Zento being fairly obvious (Zen-toe)

Papua is a bit confused by people because they try to pronounce it as a variation of "Padua" (I've come to wiv-ed wealthily in Padua... :dunce:) when it meant to be the same as Papua New Guinea (pa-poo-ah)

Personally, I pronounce Felucca "Hell". I've also made the analogy that the Tram/Fel split was sort of a fantasy "Rapture", with the sinners left behind in their "Hell on (Earth/)Fel". I wonder if that crossed their mind when they did it.

Jhelom = Jel-om

Nujel'm = new-jelm

Delucia = del-oo-see-a or del-oo-shee-a (-cia can be pronounced either way)

Trinsic = trin-sik (there is no 'z' sound)

Ocllo = ahk-lo (the 'c' is a hard 'c' It must be hard because there are no e,i,or y vowels behind it.

Felucca = fel-oo-ka (never did two c's make the sound of an sh. In English, the rule for pronouncing CC is "k" unless it is followed by an 'i' or an 'e', then is is pronounced as a 'ks'.)

Syrus:

Pah-Pow might be correct if it was spelled "Papau" like many people commonly misspell it,

but it's not spelled that way. It's spelled Papua.

dealing with that mis-spelling and mispronunciation is like dealing with the 4+ pronunciations of "Louisville".

I always used to think Papua was "pah-pow", since that's the way I apparently remember Papua New Guinea being pronounced.
But apparently it's more like "Papwa".

In spite of all that, I will continue to pronounce it "Pa-pu-wa"

Lol, there's a few I have to bite my tongue on when I hear folks pronounce them. Hythloth is one. I guess it's down to regional stuff. Unless it is a real place, like Skara Brae. The other one folks seem to have trouble with is Cu Sidhe - it's pronounced coo shee. It's a creature of celtic myth. Cu is the gaelic for dog, sidhe is the gaelic word referring to supernatural beings/faeries (note the spelling) etc. So your big tough mutt in game is actually a faery dog. Just sayin :p

Just as an aside, I believe that the U is silent in this case. It's just "toke no". Similarly, that spiky club weapon is just a "tets bo" not a "tet soo bo".
Ah well thats probably because english isint my primary tongue.

I probably read the unknown / unusual words with an accent .

Don't worry about it. We Americans cannot even agree on the pronunciations of our own states/cities/lakes/etc/etc.

I recall a huge debate last college football season about how to pronounce Boise ... ugh. ;)

This thread totally cracks me up!

I'm always being corrected for the way I pronounce some things but it never stops me.

I laugh because there are still many in Vent who call Runes "Roo N's" Like Moons, not Ruins..... It's NOT a Ru IN any more than Magery is Maaj er ee.... it's call Mage er ee..... not Maajery..... Are you a Mage or a Maaj? Gooses and Geeses...

ugh.....

"Tithe" definitely uses the long I. Since I was young I've heard the passage in Malachi about "tithes and offerings."

Old habits die hard. I always liked "jeh-lōm´" better, but from a pronunciation standpoint, "jeh´-lōm" makes sense when considering what Nujel'm must sound like.
