Maybe this is a trial balloon. Add unused strings and see response from Stratics, like Arenas.I have faith in our devs, but I believe this is a big game feature for tamers. It should involve some discussion from tamers in the planning stages. There's no point in the devs spending hours coding something which won't be fit for purpose

I am not sure if you are serious but if anything vendor prices in Luna would be going down not up. If an official vendor house system was put in it would cover all vendors not just Luna.But that would mean Tamers would then want Luna spots... 1. There is no more interaction putting an item on a vendor than there is putting it onto an auction NPC. There may actually be some interaction between buyers and sellers in an auction setting, if there is a mail system and a buyer mails a counter-offer to the seller of a player-crafted item.
2. I've made a lot of gold on WoW through auctions. The big secret: Buy during the day, during the week, when there are more sellers than buyers, so prices are lower. Sell on Weekends, when tons of players with lots of gold are buying, so you can charge more. There is no way for one player to really corner the market and manipulate the price of an item 24/7. The only exception was a very short period of time when only a couple of players had the extremely rare, hard to get recipes for some craftables, so they could pretty much set whatever price they wanted until other players got the recipes.
In UO, most people use one of the search engines to find items now. The only way to sell items on a vendor is to be in Luna, so that the search engines can find your items. If you can't pay a million gold a week to rent a couple of Luna vendors, your only other choice is to make hundreds of runes, drop them at the banks, and watch as players pick them up and re-mark them, or throw them in the garbage cans. As the player base dwindles, vendors outside Luna are becoming less and less viable as a way to sell anything. An auction house would open up trading items to all of us who didn't hit the jackpot and get a Luna house at AOS launch, or buy one for maybe a billion gold.
A game-wide, official vendor search engine would be more true to the spirit of UO, but it would also be hard to implement. The auction house is in most online games now, so it wouldn't take a lot of effort to introduce to UO. I'm all for it.

I've long wished for a change in the vendor system. Auction houses sound like a viable idea. Other possibilities might be considered as well. I've often thought that instead of having vendors in player houses, it might be better if each mainland city had an open-air marketplace or large building where those who wanted to sell their wares could rent a stall or booth at a reasonable price. That would encourage traffic in all those currently empty cities, and the high cost of selling in Luna would no longer be an obstacle for players who don't want to pay the rent that is usually charged for vendors there.
If the Auction house is at Brit West Bank I'll be happy. Because then we might get bank sitters again trying to sell their items in person so they don't have to pay an AH fee, and buyers would try and haggle better deals. Or buyers might not have to wait the hour (or however long) for the item to show up in their mailbox (also hosted at Brit Bank).

I've changed my mind about an auction house and agree with you and the others. Anything to do away with the Luna crap. Luna is not UO at all.
I like Derium's idea of confining it to just one or two places - I would toss in Bucc's Den and maybe one or two others, but confine them to the old cities no matter what.
I would definitely welcome a serious mailing system of sorts that such an AH would require as well.
I cannot believe Bucs slipped my mind. One would HAVE to go there also. fel of course
