Updated Guide: How to "do" the new event (pics included)

New P67 additions, 5th August

The Bane Chosen have moved! They are no longer in the Ophidian desert but, instead, are camped outside of Spirituality moongate, in Ilshenar.

  • Wait, what happened to the Ophidians and the Bane desert invasion?
Although no fiction has been released yet, it appears that the Bane have gone. The Ophidians there, now, do not attack players loyal to them and the old NPCs that would trade crystalline blackrock now sell the potions, instead, at 1271gp each (valuing 10 crystalline blackrock at 3813gp each, or, 381gp per piece).

  • So what happens to my current quest with the Bane NPC?
Any quests started for 20 blackrock can still be completed, although stopping this quest and starting it again from the Bane NPC reveals a new quest.
  • So how do I get food for my dragon?
The new quest involves the acquisition of power crystals; 20 of these will give you blackrock stew.
  • How do I get these crystals?
Although golems and other mechanical enemies may give you them, the Bane appear to be interested in killing the Meer. As a result, you can now lose loyalty with Meer for killing them.

The closest Meer "camp" to the new Bane camp is in Lakeshire; roughly north-west from Sacrifice (and Spirituality) -

  • Can non-combatants take part?
Unlikely, since you need loyalty to get any quests, obtained through killing meer, ophidians or bane. However, if you already have Bane loyalty, you can simply hand in any power crystals you may already have.
  • So what happens if we kill the Bane Chosen at the moongate?
Currently, the only known thing to happen is your loyalty increases toward both the meer and the ophidians.

It is worth noting that you can now also go over the 2500 loyalty barrier that was, previously, the limit for loyalty. It is possible that there is either no limit, or that the new limit is 5000. You can go over 2500 for both Ophidian and Bane loyalty (Meer is unknown).

In addition, killing Bane will reduce your loyalty to them for the amount of points they did previously (5 for a hound master, 3 for a recruit), however the loyalty increase appears to be a flat rate of 1 for each Meer and Ophidian.

Finally, it appears that there is no spawn advancement at the moment. There is no separate meer base (other than the meer spawns that already existed) and killing either side doesn't seem to advance spawns along any path.

More info to be added later!

_________

Banes and Ophidians

The following is old and largely no longer applies

This in-game "event" takes place over all shards to coincide with the fiction here, In the Shadow of Virtue: Good Neighbors. It involves two sides: The Bane Chosen and the Ophidian army.

  • Where do I go?
The "war" takes place in the lost lands desert by the Ophidian Lair, North-north east of Papua, in both Trammel and Felucca. To get there from Papua, you can simply run north across to the desert, where you should eventually find the Bane camp (which looks like a gypsy camp).

  • How do I choose a side?
Initially, neither side will attack you. To choose a side, all you have to do is go into negative loyalty with one side; either the Ophidians or the Bane Chosen. The camps for the two bases are shown below

  • What is loyalty, how do I see what I have and how do I get it?
Your loyalty ratings can be viewed by clicking your paperdoll and going to "Loyalty Rating".

Here you can see your loyalty to in-game "sides", including the Bane Chosen and Ophidians.

To get loyalty for the Ophidians, you have to kill the Bane Chosen and vice versa. However, you will lose three times the points that you gain from the side that you kill. So if you kill everything you see, you will end up being considered an "enemy" by both sides.

  • So what do you do?
The more of a given side that you kill, the more the side you ally with can advance. However, you must attack the "front line" forces in order to make any difference.
Front lines are comprised of 20 of a given side's force and in order to be repelled, three "waves" must be killed. Each wave has progressively harder enemies and these will give more points than the previous wave. Messages are periodically displayed in the bottom right of your screen, telling you how many have been killed in how many waves for both sides.

Another way to tell is to double click "flags" - there are two flags at any given time in the battlefield that mark the front lines for both sides.

If you double click the flag and nothing is displayed in your bottom right corner, this means that one of the armies has been routed and there is no battle currently active.

  • I kill things but it says I kill the bank ranks, what does this mean?
Killing any of the opposition army that is not in the "front lines" will yield less points than if they are a part of the front line forces. They will also not count toward the progression of your own side's forces, although they will still give you some points.

  • What is peril bonus?
In addition to points gained through killing something, "Peril bonus" points are additional points that may be given if other players are also killing the spawn. For non-front line enemies, or for enemies that were once front line spawn but are no longer, you will receive 0 peril bonus.

Peril bonus is applied from a pool of points, generated by the opposition's progress. So, if the side you are on is doing overwhelmingly well, you will receive less peril points and your kills will generate peril point bonuses for opposition players. However, anyone fighting for the opposition will gain peril bonus, as they are not doing so well.

A well-balanced battle will probably see both sides gaining peril points, as points are gained and generated by both sides.

  • Where have the armies gone!
As one side progresses, the front line will "shift" toward the base of the losing side. Below is a map of the places that the front lines can shift to

Eventually, however, one side will be defeated. Once a side has been routed, there is a "cooldown" period of 20 minutes before the spawn is reset. When it is reset, both armies will start from either side of the point marked "start" on the map.

  • What rewards are there?
During this time, if you were on the side of the winning army, you can return to your side's camp and use the chest in your camp for a reward in the same way that you could in the Ranger/Warden of the Abyss housing event and the Ricardo's Book event. Simply double click the chest and a reward will be placed in your backpack (usually a bag containing a random piece of loot).

If you receive a message that "This chest is locked.", there are a few causes:
    • You're using the wrong chest (If the Ophidians won, you have to go back to the Ophidian Lair's chest).
    • You're fighting for the wrong side (If the Ophidians won, but you are loyal to Bane, you get nothing).
    • No side has won yet (The chests can't be used until someone has won).
    • You have less than 1000 loyalty (You need 1000 to get a chest reward).
There is a chance of receiving a new reward from these chests instead of just a bag. The Ophidian chest has a chance to give you a Petrified Matriarch's Ring, whereas the Bane chest has a chance to give you Warded Demon Bone Bracers.

    The chests are located below.

  • Where is the blackrock from?

In addition to these rewards, you may also notice that some corpses have Crystalline Blackrock. This is the same as the ingredient that you can find in the Abyss and on Ore Elementals and you can find it on both sides' corpses, but only on the second and third wave enemies.

  • How do you use the blackrock?
This can be used as part of a loyalty-related quest on either side. If you are fighting for the ophidians, you can use 10 crystalline blackrock to receive either 3 shatter potions or 3 fear potion (the quests available from the two different ophidians to the right of the recruiter will give you the different potions each). If you are fighting for the bane, you can use 20 crystalline blackrock to receive some blackrock stew, which is used to feed - and bond with - bane dragons.

To get the quest for your chosen side, speak with the recruiter (double click) in the camp, although you need 2000 loyalty to do so. After speaking with the recruiter, mark the crystalline blackrock as a quest item and speak to them again.

Below are the rewards for both sides, the potions and stew from the NPCs and the unique rewards from the chests.

    Ophidians

  • What is a bane dragon and how do I get one?
Bane dragons are new mountables that are comparable to dread mares from Vanguards in 2008. Later waves of Bane forces can be seen to mount and then ride them.

To get one for yourself, you will need to go to the Abyss. To the west of the "centre" area, where the Slasher of Veils spawns, bane dragons will spawn that you can tame. In order to do so, however, you must first "subdue" them in a similar way to beetles. However, Bane Dragons are magical and can cast heal on themselves which may require you to keep doing damage to them. Since damage interupts a taming attempt, this can make taming them difficult.

There are also hell hounds that spawn on both sides of the abyss around the centre area, although these cannot be tamed. Neither the bane dragons nor the hell hounds have any crystalline blackrock.

  • Which side do I choose?
Whichever side you choose is up to you! Killing either side rewards you with karma, but neither side currently seems to have an negative impact on your character. Do you sympathise with the Ophidians and want to fend off the Bane invaders? Or do you resent the Ophidian's own invasion of Britannia a few years ago? The choice is yours!

Well done, you summarized it nicely!

One thing I will offer since it is kind of oblique, peril bonus is designed to give you a bonus when other players are doing the competing spawn. The bonus is sygnificant... first tier base loyalty is 1 but the peril bonus is up to +2.

Peril bonus is created when a player kills a mob on the other team. For the sake of this explaination I will call them Team 1 and Team 2. When a player kills a level one mob on team 1, they get 1 base loyalty and the other team gets a point of peril. when a player kills a level one mob on Team 2 they will get that point of peril in the form of a bonus. Each time the spawn "levels" to the next tier, peril pools are sygnificantly reduced on both sides.

Peril bonus has an in character (IC) and and out of character (OOC) purpose. The IC purpose of this bonus is to emulate the fact that when one side is losing they appreciate your help more. The OOC reason is to create an environment where people can compete/race without feeling like they are griefing people going the other way. Hopefully everyone can see it as good clean fun.

One other thing I will clear up here is that crystalline blackrock only drops off of Tier 2 and Tier 3 mobs which only appear at the front line of the battle (those that spawn near the flag).

You must have at least 1000 loyalty to get a reward for clearing away the enemy. They don't give away their best stuff to some johnny come lately!

Spawns reset to the middle 20 minutes after they are completed. Of course, you can always go do the Felucca spawn in the mean time.

Finally, another OOC feature is that if you ever want to know how close the spawn is to changing tiers, double click the flag and you will see both how close you are to levelling the spawn and how close the competing spawn is to levelling.

So, if we are crushing the Ophidians, the Bane Chosen will have a huge pool of peril points. If some young upstart comes and takes down some Bane Chosen, he will get Peril points.

If that is the case, does that mean that if the battle is very one sided, the "winners" will be getting less points than a more "balanced" battle, where both sides will have peril points?

Oh by the way, if someone has a problem with the flag maps above, I did it from memory :D so there may well be a shift needed. Feel free to post an edited version (using map 2)

If the battle is one sided, it is very likely that the pool of peril points will run dry for the side that is ahead.

Yes, it also means that if Bane Chosen are crushing the Ophidians there is a huge pool of points to draw from if you help the Ophidians.

Great guide, Trevelyan. And thanks for the additional info, Mark. May end up getting involved again to get the crystalline blackrock now that you've confirmed there's a possibility for getting it if you're trying to help the ophidians.

Will you be taking care of the aggressive ophidians that aren't part of the war spawn or does each shard have to wipe them out themselves? If yes, do you expect that spawn to stay wiped out for good after that or will it come back at each server reset?

Thank you for the guide.

Question.

I hear that everyone can tame a Bane Dragon, even with 0 taming skills.

Is that so ? Taming skill is not required at all to tame them or ride them ?

Excellent overview.

I wanted to say that the cost for the Ophidian rewards are just completely insane. For 10 crystalline blackrock, which sell for what 500k-1m on the open market, you can get 3 shatter potions, which will shatter about 500gp worth of potions in someone's bag (subject to failure). This is just so completely asinine in so many ways. First of all, nobody that PvPs regularly will design a strategy around something that costs 2-300k per use - especially something with such unbelievably limited effectiveness. It's mind-bogglingly stupid. Gee, I'd like to pvp for about an hour using this potion shattering strategy...let me just round up about 2-300 crystalline blackrock and turn them in so I can get a few dozen potions to use (for reference I have a guildie who just sold 280 crystalling blackrock for 26m).

On the other hand, I can see the usefulness of turning in 20 for the stew. Exceptionally useful bonded pet that will stay with you pretty much forever. Hmm, either that or 6 shatter potions. Right...........................

Think it will go up since the drop rate is pretty lousy.
Is it?
I get around 40 prestine blackrock in 1 solo round. I think that's a lot... considering it only takes about 35 minutes to solo a full round.

Got to hand it to the Devs here. This is a fantastic way to do wars.

Lots of alternatives off this could be used too. For example, a war could end by taking the "flag" at the end of the run. Actual winners and losers, eh?

City fights, building by building!

Well, I was actually thinking of whether price would go up or down. On slow shards, I imagine it's possible to get all the kills & loot 30-40 blackrock per round. On a busy shard, I don't think that's possible, maybe about 5 per round, for 30 mintues of work then 20 minutes of waiting.

I do like the event, I think it's pretty fun (although I could see it getting pretty boring soon too). But it's a nice new idea. It's just that the rewards need a little balancing I guess.

I actually think the stray spawn is gone on all shards now. We discovered that some extra ones were there yesterday (appart from the ones I knew about) and Mesanna got rid of them.

In UO, we have ways to create spawns inside the game for EM events. They are just kind of there and only on one one shard so that turns out to be part of what you all were seeing... and we got them out.

Well, my biggest fear was that they were going to be overpowered. You should have seen some of the looks on the producer's faces when I suggested making a potion that destroyed a percentage of the potions in a player's backpack.... So, I tried to make it so they wouldn't be laying around in piles after the event. If it turns out that they are both useful and not unbalanced, I will find a way to get you more of them.

Same could be said of the fear potion, adding a commodity to the game that is effectively [EDIT FOR SPOILER] was fairly risky too.

I managed to get to 2500 reputation with the Ophidians today, defending them from the wicked Bane; with my place in their history assured, I decided to get my bard, hang around on the rear lines, where I would at least get kill credit, and help the Bane squash slitheries instead... On the third run through as I did so, alas it seemed it wasn't enough to get the credit for the front lines, a few people started running through to come use their huge gear advantage to kill the Ophidians I was working behind them too. But! A strange thing happened. Because they were coming to me, the front lines weren't being as quickly killed either... and the line started moving against the Bane instead! After the second flag fell Bane-ward, I swapped back to my friend of the Ophidian to try and ensure they at last won one...

In the end, there was literally just 5 seconds between each wave being completed on both sides; I kept clicking the banner whilst everyone on each team just mass spammed Earthquake. And the Ophidians took the battle for the first time since the patch went live on Europa!

Back to the war chest, all I got was a Talisman of Wildfire removal, with no charges but nothing else at all on it. Someone however DID get the new artifact; it's a ring I think... and behold, the Petrified Tongue of the Matriarch!

Just been stuck trying to complete the second Ophid victory on Europa... there appears to be a weighting applied to the waves, so the team which is closest to their base gets less creatures spawn per grouping; the sides are relatively equal at the moment, but because we don't get as much spawn per appearance we can't quite kill them fast enough to prevent the Bane getting to the end of the 3 waves before us, and so we move out one flag. We've then won there about 6 times now and come back, but we get stalemated again...

Edit: and after saying that, the Ophidians finally push the final two steps into the bane base... and I get the ring this time, yay me! There's no sign of any other artifact yet, most people got relic or junk I'm afraid...

Hi

Great guide, got a couple of questions....

first off a guildy has the same problem with her pet, she kills ophidians but the bane just love to attack it as well.. but I don't seem to have that problem, my pet can sit amongst the bane all day safe and sound.... any body been told why this is ?

second is the Bane Dragons and the black rock stew, do you need 2 stews for a successful bonding like other pets. and what about after event, will there be a way of getting black rock stew to Bane Dragons.

Anyways as I said Great guide, helped loads.

not got any decent loot except Relic Fragments, but there always nice to get :)

Thanks a lot

Too bad I'll never push the bane back since I'm all alone. Took all night to move them 3 flags, even though it seems like I'm killin' um at a pretty good clip. :(

Excellent, informative and oooh so useful. It will make one of the best books to add to my Event Library room. I wonder if you mind if I copied for my Luna Library in Catskills.

Are there any ways to get involved without bashing monsters?
Are there any rewards for non-combatants?

I can play a healer role without difficulties. While the rewards for playing a healer are both gratifying and obvious.. dominion over life and death, hearing the pained squeals of people begging for your blessing, watching people you dislike die horribly when you "lag".. it would be nice to play some sort of meaningful role in terms of the published game mechanics.

Running supplies, building barricades, infiltration, sabotage, diplomacy.. any of these would be good. There's not much to herd out there apart from ostards and scorpions.

It seems killing the bane has no known reward at the moment, except their death. However, if you have herding, this is always a fun way to get rid of the bane :D
