Ideas for Mastery's of Magery

ok was thinking how nifty the bard additions are and thought maybe they could try some others.

Demon Tamer- Requires Taming and Magery skills
Demon's Leash-Basically works like Dryad's allure but with demon types, would need to find a suitable follower slot amount, perhaps scaled on the strength of the demon (like regular daemon-1 Balron-2 or 3 etc)
Dread Magic-Heals your pet, while harming you. would need to scale the heal to hurt ratio possibly based on difference between pet/owner's hp. to make it more dread, could make it more efficient with lower karma

Mage of the Earth= Requires Spellweaving and Magery skills
Summoner's Stone-Summons a gem in the pack which holds a chosen mage summon spell. Also once used the summoned creature will recieve a boost to its resists (possibly make the resist types boosted determined by element type of the summon)
Faultline-Grants the caster the infusion of chaos, which converts the physical damage of the Earthquake spell into chaotic damage. This damage could also be amplified in pvm use (would probably be overpowered if applied to pvp dmg)

Enchanted Pugilist- Requires Wrestling and Magery skills
Golden Gloves- Increases Damage dealt but hurts the users hands, causing a percentage of damage dependant on damage dealt. Increases wearers luck based on wrestling and magery skills.
The Stinger- Adds a elemental Spike to the users Ring. Spikes damage type is based on targets lowest resist.(Consecrate weapon for wrestling basically) Also could add chance of spike piercing targets skin causing a bleed effect.

....so whatcha think? Magery is still strong but it could use some spice.

Not bad ideas. I've always liked the idea of specializations. I was sorry they didn't explore that road a little more back when they were talking about it years ago.

I have always felt wrestling needed a little dmg boost based on something, plate gloves, brass knuckles, something goofy.

Hmm... I'd be more in favor of Magery Specializations that only required the base magery skills (Magery, Eval Int, Meditation, Resist).

Having Spellweaving on a mage pretty much is a specialization, seeing how with a L6 Focus and Arcane Empowerment is about the ONLY way a mage has any hope of dealing damage comparable to the other combat classes.

Wrestling needs to be beefed up into a real combat skill all by itself before it has more interaction with Magery.

Actually, I'd rather they beef up spell damages to include slayer talismans and such so mages can do damage comparable to a melee warrior. Even have its own special moves (requiring mana and say Eval Int) added before going the Bard enhancement route.

Interesting.

I have a geomancer character, I would be interested in physical damage spells & summons. Also the daemon part gives me an idea for Herding Masteries...

Reminds me a little of something I tried in my guild once. I had my guild mages specialise in one element and try to cast spells only in that group - fire, water, earth and air. We didn't end up with enough mages to really have fun with it, but the spellbook did seem to break down into those elements really well.

Combinations of different skills as a requirement would be cool too though, I think it would make sense to have some benefits come about through a character's template choices.

I think the devs have added specializations to magery in a round-about way by adding other casting skills. For example,Dark/Death Mage is Magery and Necro. Holy Mage is Magery and Chiv(A pity that chiv doesn't offer more direct damage spells outside of augmenting weapon damage). Druid Mage is magery with spellweaving. The mystic mage would be our new type of "specialization" to magery.

Seems like wrestling should be considered a combat skill too. Like for the -5 mana consumption for 200 combat skill points and -10 mana consumption for 300 combat skill points(special moves only).

I agree.

Back in the day, Mages had hoped Necro (the Bad Circle) would be a Magery add-on. Unfortunately, it became a skill.

I love the idea of Demon Taming though. However, since a summoned Daemon is a 4, a Balron would have to be a 5, if anything.

It's interesting because since AOS we, as mages, have done all spells based on elemental, physical, or chaotic damage types. However, there are no items which enhance specific spell types, such as, Cold Spell Damage +10%. I assume all mages would opt for, of course, a Fire Spell Damage +10%, if they had to choose, but that would also be an interesting Mastery idea, damage based masteries.

Mages only have two 'Cold Damage' spells that I am aware of... Harm and Mind Blast. Two completely WORTHLESS spells.

And nearly the entire 8th circle is pointless. Only Resurrection is truly useful, EQ is a bit blah, and even an EV cast by a 120 mage is instadispelled by most mobs - even some without obvious casting abilities - and its damage output is negligable at best.

Spell element damage modifiers, thats a great idea actually. would be a nice possibly simple way to make classic mages more versatile. the main magery user i have is my Mystic gargy mage, so if i want cold damage i have Hailstorm, but something to insensify the elemental damage of magery spells would be a welcome addition.

... Doesn't seem like this is actually a specialization.
I'm not opposed to boosting wrestling, but this skill combination seems to be as much of a specialization as Inscription and Magery, or Swords and Anatomy.

Which reminds me, Lumberjacks really need some love. With GM LJ using an ornate axe they get... 4 more base damage, which is +1 damage after resists.
Let alone for weaker axes.

And there are no good poison damage spells. Those would be a great help for Mages, and Necromancer Mages especially.

I agree about the Lumberjack skill. I use it on my dexer sampire, but will probably drop it now that i turned Gargoyle. Lumberjacking should give a dmg boost to all 2 handed weaps i think, at least all swords skill 2 handers. Just because its not called an axe dont mean you dont swing it like one

Harm and EQ are pretty essential in PvP, and I use harm pretty often in PvM as well. For example, against a Fleshrenderer, sometimes harm is the best DPS spell you can cast. Guess it depends on your playstyle. And my guildies understand the value of Air Elementals, hehe :).

Demon Tamer = Warlock?

Also, you can already tame imps... and those are demons, at least I consider them demons.
