Question about Wrestling for Mages

If I have a book with a shield equipped, will my chance to be hit by melee be reduced? Basically, is the wrestling skill in effect if I have a book and shield equipped?

How about a wand?

Any other weapon?

I'm certain that other melee weapons would replace the damage aspect of wrestling, but will I retain the evasion part? Thanks.

Having any weapon, including a wand, requires the weapon skill. The defensive part is from having the weapon skill, evasion is from Bushido so please clarify if thats what you mean. Books aren't weapons even though they can be equiped they count as being bare handed. Wands are mace weapons.

A book will NOT effect your wrestle defense chance. I run a wrestle mage template with book and shield... VERY tough kill for medium level PvPers:thumbsup:

Anything else will.

Thanks to both of you.

I wasn't talking about Bushido, I was talking about the chance to be hit.

So now that I know that, can I equip a shield and a book and it count as being bare handed? If not, will I still retain the chance to be hit reduction since I am not using an actual weapon? Would the shield have to have the modifier "Mage Armor", or not? Thanks.

Lastly, what do you guys think? If I can't use a shield, what is better? Is wrestling that good?

Shields don't count as they're not weapons but they'll need spell channeling

To answer you questions:

No. if you have both shield and book, you can not drink pots(I'm assuming that is where this question was leading)

If not, will I still retain the chance to be hit reduction since I am not using an actual weapon?
Confused here. Please restate.

Would the shield have to have the modifier "Mage Armor", or not?
It would have to be spell channeling. Ideal is without a negative fast cast modifier.

Lastly, what do you guys think? If I can't use a shield, what is better? Is wrestling that good?
Wrestling is no better or worse than any other weapon skill. By itself, if you have 45%+ dci, you still can be hit 50% of the time by any other dexer with 45%hci.

My defensive template of choice is 120 wrestle and 120 parry. It is a VERY tough nut to crack for dexers. The only thing I tie myself to for books is slayer mod.

Keep in mind, spell books can be disarmed in PvP.

You can parry with your bare hands? When you say you have 120 in parry, is that implied that you have a shield equipped?

So in order to receive the defensive benefits of Wrestling, I HAVE to have one of my hands free, right? This means equip 1 shield, or 1 book at a time, correct?

I have a question about Mage Armor. So I receive any negative mana regen effects from it? I know if I wear leather, I won't get as much of a hit to my regen, but I would like to know if Mage Armor gives me the full benefit to my mana regen.

One more question. Cloth doesn't detract at all from mana regen, right?

What's dci? What's hci? Why is slayer good?

Thank you.

No. You can equip both a book and a shield. A book does not count as a weapon. You can (and should) wrestle with a book and shield.

All it does is prevent you from being able to drink potions.

And MAGE ARMOR is just that. It is equal to leather armor. It doesn't affect your mana regen. Also, cloth doesn't effect your mana regen either.

DCI= defense chance increase
HCI= hit chance increase
Both are properties found on weapons/armor/etc.

I'll go through you list here.. but let us do a big time out and ask the most basic of questions: What is this character going to be used for? PvP? PvM?

If PvP, here is a VERY basic how an attack works:
1) Determine if a blow hits. This is based upon your defense skill(wrestling) and DCI mod versus opponents offensive skill(fencing, swords, archery) and HCI.
2) IF a hit lands, determine if the hit was parried. This is based upon your parry (this is VERY simplified and ONLY based upon shield useage)
Again, the above is VERY simplified and just applies for a shield and wrestling skill(let us not muddy the water with bushido)

You can parry with your bare hands? When you say you have 120 in parry, is that implied that you have a shield equipped?
The parry skill requires a shield in your hand.

You gain the benefits of wrestling if you do not have a WEAPON in your hands. Thus, if you have a shield and spellbook in your hands, you still receive the benefits of wrestling.

Why is slayer good?
A slayer spellbook boosts your spell damage by a LOT.

For me, as a mage in PvP, the only thing I rely upon a spellbook is for things like int bonus, slayer bonus, mana regen bonus. If you reply upon a spellbook for lrc, you will be a deadman once word gets around you are using it for lrc because people WILL disarm it.

If not PvP, use a spell book for whatever floats your boat. I rely upon a scrappers spellbook on my PvM necro-mage:dunce:

Correction: you can indeed wrestle with a book and a shield. You SHOULD wrestle with just a shield as you'd have the conveniency of not having to disarm everytime you chug a pot.

Spell damage increase in PvP is capped at 15%
Just to elaborate. The SDI cap from items is 15%, and if you have GM Inscription, that's another 10% for a total of 25% SDI cap for PvP. Now let's eat sushi and drink sake in the nude. :danceb:

There is no "requirement" but parry becomes much less effective below 80 dex.
