Why is the blacksmith the only crafter

... who needs to be on a certain place to perform his task - around a forge/anvil?
AFAIK no other ingame crafter profession has this limitation to create, enhance, recycle or repair items. So why the blacksmith?

Realism! :) Cooks need to be near an oven too.

Second that. You can carry nails, hammers, planers, bladed items, scissors. To make flour you have to be at a flour mill, to make cloth you need spinning wheels and looms, smiths need an anvil and forge.
I can't picture someone walking around luggin an anvil around with them.

Hmmm, well think about it.

How does a blacksmith make his items? Forge and anvil
How does a tailor work? Scissors, threads, needles.
Cook? Stove or some source of fire.
Boywer? Wood and a blade usually.
Scribe? Ink, a pen, and a book.

Answer: First off, a cook needs to be in a certain place. But the real answer is because a forge and an anvil are where a blacksmith needs to be to work.

I can't really imagine someone walking around with an anvil and a hot steaming bucket of coals and fire that can melt ingots. Hard enough to imagine how on earth someone can even ride on a beetle that hot to begin with.

However, to use repair deeds from any crafter you have to be in that shop.

OK, so for the fans of realistic gameplay (while a rideable fire beetle is already not fitting at all into that concept): At least repairs of weapons usage and a slightly damaged armor piece in the field would usually not need an anvil. You would need a nice stone to sharpen the blades and your hammer to beat out the armor. (Especially, since repairs do not consume any material, I see no need for forge/anvil in this case.)

But the cook can get away without being near any fire source if they are working on stacks of enchanted food stuff

Egg bomb
Enchanted Apples
Grapes of wrath
Fruit bowl

The only real useful foods can all be made anywhere any time just need to have the proper materials at hand.

Er, how many people actually take a blacksmith adventuring? Why is this an issue?

I do.... (see my sig - Lang is a 120 macer, 120 Smith, 100 mining, paladin that eats paragon ore elementals in Ilshenar for lunch)

And, BTW, if you find one of the rare spots with an anvil, but no forge, you can use your beetle for the forge. And, I prefer to think of the ore refining process as FEEDING the beetle the ore.

Cooks can use heating stands to cook anywhere.

While this game isn't meant to be exactly similar to real-life there still has to be some obvious links and aspects to be honored. Being able to magically craft iron swords and armor out of ingots without a forge and/or anvil is just plain stupid. Not even in any fantasy world would that be possible either.
The image of a blacksmith IS a person of strength banging away with a smiths hammer on his metal and anvil in the heat of his/her forge.

But if this is seriously an issue for you Olahorand, I recommended you go ahead and just drop the blacksmith skill. lol

Didn't you know that those 11 yr old pair of undies we all wear are made from asbestos?

I imagine we've all got a pretty nasty rash that no one wants to admit to though....:sad3:

The Smith was also feared even by the most stalwart of knights when angered. A Smith wielding his hammer would make even King Arthur think twice about messing with him. Who else would know exactly how and where to hit a knight to make his armor as useful as aluminum foil?

IMO, all 120 Smiths should have 120 wep skill automatically when they equip a Smith's hammer.

Lets see:
If I walk around with my crafter cleaning up the clutter in my chests including repairing stuff, I always have to carry this stuff to the corner with forge/anvil. Not very convenient in a larger house.
If the guild is hunting somewhere in a no recall area (FEL dungeons, Doom 2), we could put a crafter there to make necessary repairs in the field for tailored items, wooden items, bows - but not for metal armor and weapons. On top these often loose durability much faster often, since those chars wearing them are often the ones toe by toe with their enemies. On one side people call for breaking the domination of leather armor against metal armor, on the other side the blacksmith is always discriminated. Be it with the products he creates (armor heavier and non medable, enhancing limited to add resists), the chances to enhance something (w/o ASH), the place where to do craftings and repairs.

Lets be honest, leather armour has long been a thing of the past in reality. Armour heavier - yes...who really cares.
non-medable - NO, all ML(samurai) metal armour is medable when crafted excepptional.
Enhancing limited to resists - yes but alot more diverse in the resists that can be added than leather is allowing for more focus on certain elements of armour.

Barbed kits are vastly inferior to even agapite runics in terms of armour. All except gloves that is.

LOL, I remember when I first got my fire beetle and showed it to my wife. She asked "doesn't that burn up your guy's bottom?"

I about fell out.

why dont you just carry a forge and anvil scroll place them in ur big house were you are and then whack them with an axe when ur done-that should deal with when ur in your house-- now out in the battlefield hard to see a smith working his magic in the middle of a battle-- as for carrying a forge around with you talk about hot pants....

Why don't you just put 2 bags by the forge? One for repairs and one for smelting. That way you won't have to walk all around your house to repair or smelt things.

As for the field repair issue, how long does it really take to leave and come back to a no-recall area? If your gear is fully repaired and POF'ed, it takes at least a full hour of pvp combat or as long as 4 hours for pvm to reduce your gear to a level it needs repair. And this is for melee fighters, if you are a mage those times can be greatly lengthened.

If your guildmates are not smart enough to check their gear before going into battle then maybe the need to lose some of their stuff.

Just do what I do, place a forge and anvil next to my chests. Do your thing, and then chop them. A quick and easy fix.

It does suck running in and out of doom for repairs. Having a forge and anvil there would be nice. But so would a bank, stable, and lodge. I wonder how hard it would be to just move Luna in there!!

Ugh, yeah, like others said, place your chests next to your forge and anvil or your forge anvil next to your chests.

But it is always the players responsibility to check their durability before leaving. If your durability is too low then use PoF so you don't have to repair so often.

I don't see how you reason with saying that a blacksmith is always being discriminated against. Enhancing is not just limited to adding resists, chances of enhancing are the same with every crafting skill.

Sounds to me like you just want this game to be even easier.

... which means it must be excreting the ingots. You're using fire beetle poop to make weapons and armor.

From what I understand of Imbuing, the blacksmith won't be the only crafter that needs a static item for long. An artificer will need a soul forge to perform his craft.

Why not? Some people pay outrageous amounts of money in real life for coffee made from beans that went through the digestive tract of a wildcat before being ground...
