I'm in the middle of a serious battle when my UO screen switches to windows and I get a message approximating: "Your HP printer's ink cartridge needs to be updated in the next ## days". Screw HP! This is total BS! Who allowed HP to interrupt all other programs to make their petty announcements???

You installed the software to provide the warnings, if you didn't go into the options and set when it was allowed to give you the warnings, you are the one who let it interrupt your hunting.

She speaks the Truth! :D

Most printers come with the Device Drivers and a Monitoring Application. Usually one can find an option to turn off the automatic alerts and updates, with just a few minutes exploring the program's settings. The easiest thing would be to just disable the offending service(s) from starting automatically when Windows starts.

I usually turn off all of those types of options, unless they are critical (such as Antivirus Definition Updates)...these necessary updates get scheduled for a time that is convenient for me. Another option is to check for updates/alerts from the different programs and devices before starting your gaming session.

If you're afraid of messing something up, just keep a notepad handy and write down the setting's location, original value, and what you modified or disabled. If something doesn't seem to work quite right, you can always consult your notes and quickly revert the changes.

EDIT: Just remembered another little trick, especially for Printers - The manufacturer may offer a corporate edition of the device driver. This usually contains just the driver and associated files that are required to use the printer. If you don't use the monitoring application for anything like required config or special features, this might be an even more efficient way to go, if you are comfortable completely removing and reinstalling your printer.

But, but,... he wanted to complain and have people cry tears of unhappiness for his pain.

Instead you flay him with his failure!! And rub salt in the wounds and pour hot tobasco on them!!

Shame!!

Though he did have it coming to him.

Greetings

i must admit i thought it quite amusing, as i can imagine how MAD you would have been ;)

however, it can be sorted

go to start (bottom left of screen)

depending on whether you are running xp/vista find the run icon xp (search for it with vista)
with run menu open type in "msconfig"

a small box will pop up

click it and go to startup drop down (far right option i think)

look at the programs running and unclick anything HP so the printer software does not run in the background

then click ok and restart

problem solved oh and also make sure printer is OFF when playing to avoid any probs in future

good luck :)

I can semi-sympathise, since I've managed a few deaths by hardware - commonest being the batteries in the wireless mouse always waiting until the middle of a fight to run out of power!

You can either disable or uninstall said offending software, that should solve the problem. Death by printer isn't good!

It's a pity hardware manufacturers seem to think we're so dumb that we need to be told when batteries run out or the ink goes on the printer. Like you can't figure it out from the warning light on the printer or device.

I forgot all about the driver software when I moved to linux, then reinstalled XP on a spare drive and ikes! Seriously, I think it felt worse because I hadn't installed windows in years, but I'm sure the drivers weren't so messy a few years back.

Hence the reason I'll always be attached to my pc in more ways than one!... Corded mouse FTW!

Whats annoying for me is my web browser. With Windows 7, well it's happened with XP too, but if i have a browser window running while playing UO. It'll switch me over to the browser, it's really annoying if i'm stealthing while llama. I'll switch back and see my guy no longer stealthed and running all over the dang place.
