Now, many a u.hall poster has, in the past, wondered about Rico the Scoundrel and his mysterious "...la". Unless this is a coincidence of the highest order, I finally have figured it out.

What does it mean?? How can you explain that which defies any kind of logic?? Isn't it some cool theive's club motto?? Or is it perhaps a "seige thing"??

Well, it has nothing to do with Rico Suave, that's for sure.

The answer is all summed up in the following photos, and it turns out the answer is quite natural!

That's right.

I'm sure there are those who already knew, but hopefully you'll at least get a few chuckles outta this regardless. Rico! You're exposed!

Rico post the reason for his use of "la" in a thread but it was a while ago and I am not even going to try to find it. I do not know if that is the real reason as well, as only Rico knows that.

I heard somewhere that the word "la" is used a lot on the asian shards as a for of "LoL" So maybe when Rica says la he is laughing out loud?

LOL

I just read it as a cute little musical note at the end of everything he says. I'll prolly keep reading it that way even if I do find out what it really means. It makes his posts sound so sweet :)

It's simple really. La is the feminine singular definite article in several Romance languages, including Spanish, French, and Italian. In English, prefixed to a woman's name, ironically as if to that of a prima donna.

It means everything he says is from a woman's perspective cause they have the parts he wishes he had.

:) The smiley means it's a joke. Or maybe not....YMMV

*smiles* People have tried for years to devine the secret of ...la. All the way back to the official UO forums. The only reason I have not moved or locked this is because it has certainly become a part of UO lore. From a community standpoint anyway.

hehe I appreciate it Kelmo. It was just meant to be a little fun thing in the midst of all the more serious discussions.

Why so sure its an asian thing, guys? I interacted an awful lot with japanese players in FFXI since there were no "japanese" or "english" servers... You mostly communicated through a translator function, but you get to catch some of their more common sayings. They did "w" for laughing.

Oh wow.. if its a part of UO Lore, then this game is truely dead.

'Ricola' was his old user name. He got banned for well, obvious reasons.. lol.

Rico + la = a person struggling to find his womanhood.

If you want my theory as to why all Rico's posts end in ...la.

it's because he knows it winds people up.

Ricola ad --> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_dDFIHfTFqg

A couple/few things always spring to mind whenever I read a Rico "...la."

In Liverpool, it's a shortened form of "lad," generally used affectionately.

There was also a Liverpudlian band called The La's - hit was "There She Goes." http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2003/dec/05/popandrock.music

In New Orleans, a group of folks I knew well would use "...la" in much the same way as the Japanese use, "...ne" or "honto," roughly an affirmation of truth and a method of ensuring the listener is, in fact, listening, as *cough* it prompts a response. Depending on tonality, it was also considered a fond teasing/leg-pulling.

Some, all, or, indeed, none of the above may be accurate or even near the mark. Really, any confirmation one way or the other would almost bound to be disappointing.

I'm completely satisfied not knowing for certain. What I like most is Rico leaves it to us for our own individual interpretation.

heh, I used to know the reason behind it, its just been way to many years since I heard it. Would have to go back years and years to the old siege/battle vortex days.... My memory is failing in my old age. If someone could get ahold of Corwin or one of his super special friends they would prolly know.

The only thing I know la to be is the sound used at the end of sentences spoken by Cantonese speaking Chinese. That's all it is, just a sound, it means nothing. It kind of helps their sentences flow I figure. I guess the habbit carried over into the game world. I didn't notice it much in early UO days, but I know my friends used it in EQ. I have seen it used in UO in recent day though.

My guess is he saw this at some point and now uses it for fun. If it has nothing to do with this then I have no idea whats up with it.

peace

la is a word that European people have used for years and years and years, just like 'ta'. La doesnt really mean anything, its just a vocalized acknowledgement that you're done speaking or that you're ready for a response. :p
