Up and Coming - Big Fish Comp

Just to give you the heads up and time to crack out those fishermen and get them gmed.

PoC will be hosting a Big Fish Competition soon (September):- so get in and get trained so you can take part. This will be a shard event.

There will be other events on the day all water and fish orientated but should be loads of fun.

Prizes are still being discussed but so far we have decided upon - a marked fishing rod with first place marked on it - your winning fish taxidermied for you or kit given so you can do it. (not sure how the kits work).

We are also considering having a boat race on the day and a rare fish contest with the aquarium nets and bowls.

When someone pulls up a big fish does it show who has caught it? (just checking)

Does anyone have a link to the possible fish you can collect with the aquarium nets and bowls? I am trying to work out the rare ones.

I caught my first ever "big" fish the other day, and my fishing is only about 85? I think. Am pretty certain it had my name on it too =)

I remember reading somewhere about aquarium fishies, just can't remember where, I'll search through game links later on and see if I can find it =)

Dang it...I might just have to transfer my Fisherman to ocean for this event LOL.

K in a nut shell :D if you catch a big fish and its over 20 tones then it has your name on it. If its under 20 tones..it just says big fish and the weight.

The biggest fish ever caught was on Napa..WOOOT which weight in at 201 or was it 202 stones. It was one of those two numbers..cant remember.The info is still out there but since stratics took a dive...my book marks dont seem to work. But I know its still out there on some UO page.


Now tho ...the biggest fish I ever caught was 500 tones..I swear it...on my mothers grave...even if she is still alive. but the dang fish took me into battle with swords..and im just a simple dagger man...and I tryied to fight it off..but a giant whale ate it...so... :D<---This is just me role playing me fisherman on Napa ;D

The smallest was 1 stone. Sorry I cant remember the shard or the names.



if Im NOT mistaken..U have to be at least 65 or higher in fishing to catch a big fish. Also you need to be in deep water.
The problem I have with BIG fish..is that some days I can catch 2 or 3 of them..and then other times I go 2 or 3 days without catching anything but sea monsters.

now a True fisherman never tells his spots..so I will give ya a word of advice..fish around magicina.. :D Nuff said..since the water is so polluted :p

When did that change? The biggest fish ever caught was on Oceania for the entire time i ever played.

Yes it was oceania, and i believe it was Cymm that caught it. Think it was 214 stones, and i do remember this well, coz i have the second biggest fish at 209 stones.

yeah cym hads the fish on display at her foxfire vendors. id say shes got it packed away somewhere.

Yeah they had a list of all the biggest fish on each shard and who caught them. To get on the list you actualy had to get somone to come onto your shard and confirm it so you couldnt fake a screenie or anything. Thats what i got told anyway. I caught a 198 pound one once. Was pretty impressed by that. I just wish my fisher was named Jahira-Tor or something instead of 'Smelly Fisch Catcher', thank god for soul stones.

A fish will have a name on it if it is over 20 stones.

Under that they are unnamed.

Cym had the biggest fish for a while, it is still located in the Fox Tavern NE Luna on the wall. Her fish was relegated second after someone on another shard caught a larger one, but it still stands as the largest Oceania fish, unless someone (unknown) has caught another.

I am not sure which of these would be most rare so perhaps for the competition we could see who can catch the most different species from this list within a set time?

Anyone have any other ideas?

Minoc Blue Fish is very common, especially at low skill levels. Having a separate competition tally for each species would work well, as people (humans, at least) without a proper fisher character could still compete. A GM fisher is less likely to pull up a Minoc Blue Fish, someone of lower skill might actually have an edge in that division.

Actually, will you be accepting fish in or out of bowls? In bowls would be pricey, plus sneaky people could just bring in pets from home. If they catch the fish then let it expire in their pack, they could turn in the bones as proof (sneaky people may be less inclined to sacrifice their pets).

Dammit, I did it again, I read "bowls" as "bowels" and was REALLY confused about where the conversation had gone! =o

I've never actually tried to catch a fish for an aquarium =) Is it just the same as regular fishing, but throwing in those little nets instead? Are the nets reusable?

yes with just the little nets and no not reusable and you need to put the fish in a bowl so that it does not expire....die. I once thought about opening up a fish shop just for some fun but was not sure anyone would buy.

I bought an aquarium months and months ago, and have never got around to actually trying to use it yet =P

I reckon I saw a vendor a while back that was selling the fishies, no idea how well or otherwise it went though =)

Shame you get charged for having stock on, without actually selling it, makes it expensive to keep things "just for fun"

theres also the fancy colours to think about too. back when i had my aquarium i had tonnes of fancy coloured fish

Would be nice if vendors sold items on consignment. If they don't sell it, they don't get pai.. eh, hadn't finished saying it and I can already see how people would use that for mass storage...

I love me little fisheys...Was jumping for joy when I got my sea horse and my jelly fish. Also if you put them in a fish bowl..they will never die. But in A tank every fish has a chance of floating to the top. Its just a way of life.

Now back to topic. This is a big fish contest right? Being out on the open deep seas..drinking rum and pondering if those fish are really winking at me??? Just asking is all :D Thanks.


Btw put mermaids and whales into this game :p

aye my memories is not that good either..heck I dont remember last week. :D So if they did have whales in the game..bring em back in should be easy... :D

Aye perhaps moby could have unknown skeleton of a fisherman in his belly like the ant lion.....although killing whales could cause some up roar I guess.

Then again..hate to say this..the more of an uproar something gets the MORE people check it out. This could be a BIG thing for UO to get more people back in the game. Hate to say it but its true. there is no such thing as bad publicity :danceb:

I also remember seeing dolphins, i dunno if they've been taken out, but from memory they were unharmable(even a word??). i havent seen one for a while tho

Dolphins are still around you often see them alonge the Cove coastline.

Dolphins are harmable, I make a point of harming the living snot out of them. Harbingers of doom, they are. Soon as you see a dolphin, a water elemental isn't far behind.

The aquarium fish caught are determined by skill. Thing is, when you hit GM you can no longer catch the sort of fish you could when you were a newbie; what counts as
"rare" for any given character depends on their exact level of skill.

Not sure how you can prevent people from bringing pre-caught "large fish" to the event.

The taxidermy kit is simple enough to use, the only real requirement is having over 90 carpentry skill. The kit itself is sold by NPCs (far cheaper in Fel).

I'm not sure how you go about marking a fishing rod though... I know there's a weapon engraving tool, but does the rod count as a weapon? Hitting things with it equipped tends to result in a destroyed rod.

A Leviathon unique arti would be an interesting prize... However, I'm not sure how easy such a thing is to find these days. I calculate the amount of effort in obtaining them to be obscene.

One final FYI, a frostwood crafted rod will have the spell channeling property attached. Handy for any up and coming fisher to know.

I was in cove fel mining last night and bumped into a dolphin. Its bar was yellow, i couldnt have attacked it.
