Forget the small knife. Use a mace. It may hve been two years since I GMed it but you never forget what you went through.

I just started the skill Begging a week ago, I am currently in the low 50s, I started out at zero because I was not sure what my new characters skills were going to be. Anyway I like everyones ideals and agree with most.
I feel as though begging is a fun skill, but so out of date with the limitations that something new should be added that was suggested in the previous posts.

I say do something to tie in Begging with the Humility virtue. Exactly what I'm not sure of, but a couple of ideas...

1) Humility goes up when you lose fame (except by sacrificing it).
2) Humility titles decrease the karma loss on Begging to where you never lose Karma as a Knight of Humility.

Changes to Begging itself...

All NPCs have a "begging chart" depending on what they are like the elves do now. Nobles, for example, would give more gold when rarer values come up on the chart. Armorers would give something like exceptional armor (not actually exceptional, but with higher resists just as if someone with decent arms lore made something of exceptional quality). Tailors would give cloth or clothing...

Why stop with the NPC.
Let the begging skill work with the player too. Get them into the act. When the begging skill is used on the player a gift, (given to the beggar with nothing in the beggar's return window.) Can in some way blesses the giver. (Much like escorting a NPC.) That would be a way to reward both. Even an empty pack, one oil cloth, or mount would count. Finding a beggar would be as tough as finding an escort. Timer is the same as begging from a NPC maybe 1 UO day to the giver. Who would want to wait, that long to do it again with a beggar. You may want the giver to get a little more than just an escort, to make it worth the trouble finding one. Even if it is a friend with the begging skill it takes time.

Beggar's tattered hooded robe, comes in a variety of drab colours. Can be acquired by begging an npc tailor.

I figure since everyone else has a hooded robe now, why not? :next:

This might be something interesting.

Ok, the Humility Virtue and the Begging skill:

-The Begging skill normally causes a player to lose a little karma if they're karma level 3 or higher, and always causes them to lose fame.

-The Begging skill can be used on NPCs to gain gold or items, dependant on that NPCs begging table. Different sorts of NPCs give different gold/items to beggars depending on their skill, karma, and plain random chance. For example, a provisioner might give most beggars food or spirits, but those with better karma/skill would have a change to gain some gold or something provisioners typically sell such as fishing poles, hatchets, or shepherd's crooks. Especially good beggars might even get a rare chance to get an exceptional tool roughly in line with minor tokuno arties like a mongbat-slaying hatchet. Each beggar can only beg from any given NPC once per day.

-The Begging skill can be used on PCs during a pending trade in which the beggar has no items up for trade. In that case, the giver receives a 'blessing' from the beggar and gains 1 luck for every [0.5] skill points of begging the beggar has for [2] hours. Using begging in this way also increases the beggar's Humility. There is no limit to the number of times a beggar can grant this blessing, but a character can only receive it [1] time per day. This use of the begging skill causes a much greater loss of fame than when used on NPCs, but no loss of karma.

-Characters on the path of Humility can more easily attain higher karma levels. Each milestone on the path increases the karma level at which beggars begin to lose karma for begging, therefore a Knight of Humility never loses karma for begging. Likewise, each milestone on the path of Humility also lowers the fame a character needs to have before other players can see their karma/fame/skill titles.

Numbers in brackets probably need to go through a balancing process.

I apologize in advance if the following idea is too silly, but I thought it might be a fun thing, especially around Halloween.

How about making a new begged item called "Ergot Rye" -- a loaf of rye bread infected with the ergot grain fungus -- ref: http://www.uh.edu/engines/epi1037.htm.

Upon eating the bread, an avatar would jump and excitedly point to the nearest mobile, shouting "A witch! A witch!".... the infection could last for any specified length of time the Devs might deem appropriate. :)

I agree with more items (i.e rubbish armour suits & weapons)
also broken and defective deco.
I feel that just about any item (though a shoddy version of it)
should be attainable by begging though very, very rare to find
these items.

Begging could work like peacemaking.
A creatures goes hostile and walks towards you -
you use begging on it and your character begs and grovel
and if successfull it will spare your life (for a moment) and
either go peacefull for a second or pick another nearby target
instead.

For use on players, a beggar might be experienced enough with
rich folk so he can assume an approximate of how much gold a
person has on his person and perhaps even his "balance".
