Ok... so I haven't played UO in probably six years now.. I have been many places since, and none of them scored a place in my heart quite like UO did when one of my squadmates I was stationed with in Hanau, Germany got me hooked on it.. most of my time was spent on the Europa server.

I remember toiling for weeks with a couple friends mining and crafting shields to sell to the armory within the Britain Castle walls... crazy ammounts of them... to save up for our very first Wooden House. It was a euphoric moment seeing the foundation fit in a nice little patch along the mountains NNE of Britain...

... a euphoria that was abruptly and violently interrupted by a couple fellows named "Kishore" and "RaVeNoUs" who would come buy at least once daily to Ebolt us to cinders... there seemed to be nothing we could do. This drove Kaelynn to hone her skills at defenses and and the general avoidance of oppertunity for getting her butt kicked.. she found out time and time again that (PvP) combat was not something she was destined to be proficient at.

At one point, Kaelynn enlisted with the Guardsman Militia out of Yew, and was a part of many battles with the local Orcs.... it was there that she learned all about Flamestrikes, and how being on the recieving end of them is less than desireable.

--

Over time, Kaelynn and her acquaintances Brewer Grant, and Lerra had many adventures... maintained a house on Valor Island that was terrific for ship mining... spent hours upon hours hunting Earth elementals and various other nifty coin-dropping quarry. Once, Lerra even found herself the victim of "Oh, look.. someone is gating me to Skara.." and then landing in a weird little room full of corpses and other less-than-amused ghosts.

The Lost Lands were fun... Delucia became my new home away from house... you could ride Llamas! how sweet! You could also be completely wtfpwnd by an innocent little snake in the grass... only to notice with the stunning clarity of Ghostism that it was actually a Silver Serpent.

Trammel and Felucca hit... and lots of drama resulting...

At some point not too long after that I was deployed to Bosnia, and left my credentials with a friend back in the rear.. That would be the last time I saw my Kaelynn... the account was lost... shared... stolen.. who knows.

---

That was long ago... but I revisited last night... on a second account I had started in '97, but didn't do too much with. Nothing to speak of on it, so it is almost like starting over. I logged into Chessy, as it actually had a character on it.

What I have learned so far.. (I'm using the enhanced client for the moment)

.. The world seems to be flat now. I tried sailing north out of Minoc to Valor Island, and hit a wall.

.. Snakes Now Suck when not ready for them. I found the spot on Valor where I used to have a small house, and made the mistake of hopping off to look around. My boat is now waiting for me to recall back to it to reclaim it.

.. Whats up with the busted inbound-only Moongate? Luckily there were lots of regs laying about... so I wasn't stranded... It seemes a lot of things went Kersplode while I was gone..

.. Towns are so.... Quiet.. Britain on the other hand looks like some strange Disco party hit it... so many sparklies near the bank!

--

Ok.. so this was a stupidly long lead in for the question.... What's a good server to look into? I am hoping to find some folks to hang around with and pull me back in. I am not opposed to RP, but I am much more into PvM hunts, exploring, crafting... and I try to avoid PvP.

I want to upgrade to Stygian, but only after I give it a few weeks to grab my attention.

On a side note.... if on the miniscule chance someone knows anything about the status of an account on Europa with Kaelynn, Lerra, Grant, Anubis, and Brewer Grant on it... Yeah... one can dream, eh?

welcome back!

to give a short short answer, Atlantic I believe is the most populated shard, enough where it doesn't feel "dead". I am not sure about Europa, sorry =/

As suggested, Atlantic is the most populated shard. It never drops to "low population" and will always be at "medium" and often enough "high", so there are plenty of people.

New Haven and Luna are the two most populated towns now. An invasion in Britain awhile back pretty much drove everyone out and it never really recovered since. Usually the rest of the towns are fairly quiet, though you can find a player or a small group here and there.

I generally run across people in dungeons, even the regular tram dungeons.

Thanks for the responses! I will check out Atlantic as soon as my classic client finishes installing.

Looking at this account, it is registered as far as Lord Blackthorne's Revenge.. will Stygian upgrade it with everything in between?

*so many things to think about... old memories starting to flood with regards to character creation and all*

all expansions before SA are free to all. trust me, your upgraded to Mondains legacy.
SA will only give you SA, which is entirely worth it.

Welcome Back from Bosnia and to UO!
Atlantic may be the most populated, but Origin is a good shard too. We get all the patches first, which is mixed blessings for sure, but we are often envied. We have a big guild there with PVM hunts, crafters, and explorers - exactly what you said you liked. Come visit!

Europa is fine too! Nice people and fairly well populated..but the best choice depends on where you live ofcourse.

Welcome back!

plus if I remember correctly, Europa is the "rares capital", seems they were smart and didn't let theirs decay ;)

Siege is where you belong.

In Trammel, you can't lose anything (ever), and you can't take care of annoying people who really need killing.

The downside of siege is the population is pretty low, but if you get into a sizeable guild, that's not such a big problem.

The upsides:
1. you can kill annoying people who need it
2. plenty of housing
3. no spawn camping
4. few resource gathering bots
5. you can solo the Barracoon spawn in despise if you want - only moderate chances (50:50 ish) of being raided.
6. you can kill afk resource farmers and take their stuff.
7. most things are far cheaper than on other shards

However, the key, no matter where you end up, is to find a group of like-minded friends that you enjoy spending time with. That's what really matters in this game.

*laughs at Vaen and attempts to high-five him* Yes, Atlantic Rp is pretty awesome and Atlantic as a whole is well-populated and active.

Choosing a shard is honestly a pretty personal thing. Its all about what is best for -you- and how it compliments your playstyle. Make a character on the shards and spend some time getting to know the community. Introduce and familiarize yourself with the different guilds/rp communities and see which one fits you best.
