"You cannot pick that up"

My thief is trying to get some things out of provisioners' crates on Trammel. I've unlocked & untrapped the crates, but when I try to remove things form the crates, I get the message "You cannot pick this up."

Why is this?

You have to do finger excercises first. You get the quest in buc's den somewhere.

Why are you trying to steal their stuffs??? They didn't do anything to deserve it.

some you have to steal, others allow you to take them if I remember correctly.
