Why the rare colors? Who cares?

I would like to ask the uo community who deal in these kinds of things. Why care about a rare colored cu or box or that rare piece of deco? Honestly, to me, its just colors and things that take up storage in my castle. Now I will admit, I do plants, but only for seeds of renewal and dyes. When they stop producing seeds and or stuff I can use, I turn them into fixtures and clip them till nothing left. I dont go for the rare colors, I just go with what matches and looks nice. However the ice blue ToT is the only 'rare' color I care for.

People must realize that EA does this with rare colors and dyes, which is nothing more than a small code change for color and making players go crazy for it.

So, who are these people that go nuts for deco and colors and why? By all means this is not a rant or any kind of 'your dumb' post, its an honest question. I mean if people like this didnt exist, I would have nothing to sell from all the ish champs I kill lol.

Colors make the world beautiful. Color can influence our emotions, and actions. I love colors! Why do people collect cars? Baseballcards? etc etc. It's the way of people.

The OP and I have similar taste, I think: if it can't be used to kill stuff, I'm not too concerned about it. However, I have many friends who love doing house deco, trading rares, etc.

UO appeals to a wide array of people, each with their own respective interests. I think it's terrific. The game would be substantially more boring if everyone were like me.

Same reason people get tat's and nipple rings they want to standout . Odd rare colors help that in a mmo. :p there is not much else.

No one cares if you like brown and gray or just black and white why should you care what others prefer.

Soooo... tell us how you really feel?

i agree whole-heartily on the gift boxes. why must the pretty ones be so damn rare?? why not make the ugly ones rare, then everyone gets pretty ones and the Jones' can still have their feeling of superiority for owning them all.

no angel for me.. unless i want to pay.

I love rare, unique items, something that took some work to get.
I agree that they can be a little over the top, and alot of mine are packed in chests because they just wouldnt look good anywhere in my house.
Just another way to show your accomplishments I gusse.
With rare event items a way to show that you were there in some cases.
Ultima has allways had its hard to get items the casual player only dreams of some day obtaining.
Iv obtained alot of my old dream items, i remember when jackles were 50 mil, and I never belived id ever get one on my own.
And just wanting 1 event item, thinking if i ever just got 1 id be happy forever lol. the pixle crack is addictive.
But at the end of the day never a pixle item one has proven to be worth as much as the friends iv made in game, or the memorys iv built along the way.

Golden plated crystal dish vs plastic dish

Corvette vs Civic

and so on...

they can all get you thru the day yes... but are you going to say something like your civic can take you from point A to Point B as well as my vetti so your Civic is as good as my Vetti?

but yea the virtual **** is different. but then why are you playing UO since it does you no good IRL but you waste more of your time when you can take your vetti out and get laid?

I noticed people talking about PvP, I can honestly say I play UO to PvP and I do spend at least 90% of my UO time PvPing (across 5 shards so far and growing) but I still sometimes do trammie **** like x-shard trading and farming ingredients in safety land...

I just got a really sweet 2-tone angel box that does the same crap as a small brown bag that can be brought from a provisioner NPC for 3gp... so what? I might be able to sell it for mills for even more PvP oriented items or I can just show it to you and say "you do NOT have one and you never will"

I'm going to show you why.

I've got a new castle. This is ALL about decorating for me. Less in some cases is more. Now I know something goes against the wall, but I haven't figured out yet.

My problem isn't the angel box. I have the one I need, but my wife needs one for her room to replace a table she has so in my case I have a very specific need. My son also wants whatever I get so I'd like to get him one too.

There seems to be a misconception that people who collect and buy these things are often look-at-me better-than-thou-art banksitters, but we can't forget that there are some people who want and have rare colored items because they like to satisfy their creative (e.g. house deco) or role playing purposes and desires rather than to only show off.

Like many, I like certain things of rare color if it goes well with my house or looks good on a outfit of course, but I wont go out of my way and spent UO gold on any rare dyes or any item just for color or any color-related reason, but this is because I like to save and use my UO gold in the most efficient means possible.

Bottom line is, if it doesn't improve my characters performance in any way, I wont buy it.

Majority of rare colored items and expensive deco I have in my house I have recieved by drops, events, or bought at extreamly cheap prices.

Well thier is not a correct or wronge way to play the game, thats what draws people to play UO compared to alot of other games. I feel that players make the game what it is, but beyond that and the content is another area of collecting things. For me personally after playing for like 6 plus years, I started to get really bored and felt it was time to hang it up for a while.

But I decided to try collecting the old xmas statues and see if I could complete one set of all the names. Once I completed that which took over a year to do, I decided to try and collect all the names and colors of the statues in both directions. I am still collecting them to this day after like 5 years, and will probably never complete this collection, due to some of them may not even exist in that color or direction. But its a fun challenge and I have met alot of players from alot of differant shards, and made alot of new friends along the way. The interaction along with acquiring the statues created a new pathway of fun besides learning the ongoing new content.

Also thier are like over 30 differant names that exist times 15 differant colors and two differant directions that they face. Some of the names and designs of the statues are very difficult to find in the game. I made the statues into a museum on the roof of my house, which is open to the public to see. This also insures that the scarcer statues were not tossed out by players who were unaware of the rarirty of the statues they had.

This game has so much to offer depending on what you want to accomplish, ans sometimes is does involve colors.

Rehuing is fairly easy for them to do, players always lap up anything thats been recoloured, no matter wether its useful or not, they know that so it increases the longevity they can get out of things without having to harass their art department for new graphicss.

Why do people bother to choose a color for the cars they buy? Why not just have all cars be the base color of the materials that it is created out of?

The answer to that question is the same reason UO players enjoy various colors in the game.

Sure.

Why collect any kind of rare?

Why try to virtually kill people? Why brag of it? Why spam "punkte" at the Luna Bank to show off your kills? Why post screencaps of your murder counts?

No one questions those playstyles.

I don't collect rares either, be they event rares or re-hued items or bugged-but-legal items. When I get an event rare (such as from an EM event) I sell it. I've had a lucky streak of late and I hope it continues for a good, long while.

But, one of the virtues of this game is the way it supports multiple playstyles. One of these is collecting rare items from various sources.

I have a question.....Why the need to question playstyles, especially ones that don't directly impact your own?

There's some pretty obvious answers to this.

The first being collector value. If something is rare, then a collector or another user who owns that particular item knows they have something of value (and want by others).

Secondly, even though the item may only be unique by a single hue, that makes your item (or pet) unique in such a way that you know not everyone will own the exact same item (or pet).

In some cases, people like to collect full sets of items (or pets), including the rare hued items. It adds to the overall set value, and demonstrates their passion for their collection (I guess that could be one of several words used to describe it I suppose).

I personally like having unique items (even the hued ones) just because they aren't common run of the mill throw away oddities.

I havnt really heard this answer yet. I like to decorate my house realistically. That means I hate white chests and those monster statues or green lamp posts. However, some stuff looks great. I love the heritage tokens and that was prolly my favorite expansion. Things like fountains and mirrored dressers in the old days were so awesome looking and it was such a bummer to have to deal with "red dresser" or the bookshelf with no books (btw, im still longing for one of those full bookcases). I like how they release them slowly and rare because then everyone doesnt have the same stuff in their houses. The guy, and I hate him so, who has the real looking full bookcase has a unique items that he should be proud of. On that note, I also hate the intense colors, but I know some love em and thats cool.

This is simple.
Because its wait for it...
wait for it.....
wait for it..
RARE LOL.

Let me get into a little detail..
Why do people collect cards, coins, antiques, paintings, pottery etc.. because they want a collection.
The rarer the item no matter how ugly it is the more value it has
The more value means it's rarer.
If the most beutiful paiinting in the whole world is mass produce the value of that beutiful painting would be 99cents at walmart.
If the most ugliest shirt in the world but was made by hand and it's one of a kind unable to be reproduced then that ugly shirt will be worth millions.
Rare and pretty worth more than rare and ugly, Ugly and commong worth less than pretty and common, ugly and rare worth more than pretty and common.
These are what people put prices and accompishments on. These people either collect for collecting or collect for there value. Same holds true to virtual items. It's not what you can do with it, it's just how rare and valuable it is. Just like many of ultima non-duped server rares. Once they were duped they became mass produced and no longer a rare but common so value of them were worthless.

-Galen's player
Because I was wondering. Sheesh, people cant ask an honest question because they are curious? And it does directly impact my own playstyle, I farm this stuff and sell it to players. So, I was wondering why.

And not to butt heads, but comparing a rarely hued item in uo to what color car you want is a little off base. $25k I would expect you get the color you want. But then again ford dont pump out one strangly hued car once a month either right?

So, in the end, I was honestly just curious as to why, maybe making conversation? But, I see that even a simple honest, sincere question can lead to people being rude or 'boarderline' rude. Guess on the internet everyone is ready for a fight, except a select few.

And no I wasent going nutty over xmas stuff. Deco is not meaningful to me really. Ive sold everything deco that came out of champ spawns, except the stuff I cant sell, like the statues of slimes, spiders and ophidians. Well I could I guess, but it would take so long to sell by the time it does I would break even on vendor costs.

I do like the virtue tiles, lord britishs throne, basicly stuff that is pretty common but set up in such a way that my castle emulates some kinda royal castle with training rooms and such.

it gives us something to play for. People who play a lot can buy or hunt what others don't have. There is also the (real life) luck factor of having the rare item fall in our packs; whether at a spawn, peerless or by claiming a gift box. It helps make each day an adventure. People may call it greed. But heck...I remember when I bought one of the UO expansion, the description on the back of the box was, "hunt for treasures and riches for ages to come". Rares are not all of what UO is. But it sure makes playing UO more fun.

I don't think there are too many other MMORPGs out there that have houses a player can decorate. That's kind of neat in itself. :) So of course I like it when I have a chance to get something special to use for decoration. Other things, like special colored pets is more of an accomplishment because it can take a long time to achieve.

Because its a game and rarity if fun.

Thats about it.

doesn't matter what it may be, if there's only a handful per shard, people will go ape-poop over being the exclusive ones to display it.

i wish the devs would have a sense of humor and make a 'golden horse dung' ultra rare that the collectors proudly boast. then, only in UO, would a mound of golden dung be held in the highest regard.

Interesting though. That even though you got your car for whats under the hood, rare vintage cars that you can walk faster than from the 1920's are worth more than your car or a ferrari. Simple reason even though there is no practical use for them there value is in the rarerity.

worth is measured by it many uses, those old cars served a purpose still. and did you notice they were all pretty much black & white in the 20's?

ot sure what practical use they serve other than having them cause some are rarerer than others. I mean I can drive one of a cliff and watch it not explode. Not sure if they explode or not. Couldget from point A to point B but most likely have some person hit me from behind or the side making the repair cost more than a combine total of every car in a 5 block radius.

I mean it's uses other than parades, collection, trade, museum, historical value. But for the intended use of going to a store or driving around the risk is not worth it when you can just grab any common 1980's car and up to get you around. If I had something like that it would not leave my protected moist free garage without a arm escort.
I never really notice them being Black and white though wouldn't surprise me. Sometimes I think the whole world was walking around in different shades of black and white back then. Come to think about I wonder how much the Wright brothers first airplane is worth?

You know, I've never really given much thought as to why I collect stuff like that...

I guess it's partly because many of the items I try to collect are things you won't see in everyone's houses. Possibly because they are unique, or possibly because many don't have any use for them, such as my collections of Event Rares, Snowglobes, Holiday Bells and Christmas/Obsidian Statues.

Maybe it's because I want to be different. Odd and rare colours are one way of making yourself stand out in a crowd. (Even if the crowd is all dressed in neons)

Or maybe it's just the feeling of satisfaction I get knowing that I earned something rare/unique on my own, through patience and perserverance. (and stubborn determination) For example: My first Ice White Cu. It took me two straight weeks, at about 3-4 hours of taming per day to make one spawn. It then took me a 4 hour GM queue through a server down to get it moved off the mountain where it had spawned (to my utter dismay). To this day, and probably for ages to come, I'll still hunt for that coveted Blaze Cu :)

I'm not a PvPer, I get bored of repetitive PvM after awhile, but one thing I'll never tire of is finding new and strange things to collect, be it rehued or not. :)

Why do people collect stamps?
I guess the answer is similar.

While some consider all this effort a waste of time and space, others are happy when they possess a rare item.

Why analyze them?

That's the great thing about UO: It includes a large playing field for all types of players.
