Why do you play UO?

Curious as to why people play UO. Is it for the competitiveness of PvP? Relaxation? Enjoyment of doing things in a game that you couldnt do irl? All of the above?


I would have to say the only reason I stay is because of the people. Not all of them, but most of them lol If I have a crappy day at work or aggrivating night at home, I could jump on here, laugh and kill some things. I'm not competitive so I doubt I stick around for the PvP hehe but its fun none the less, whether I live through it or not.

I play because of the people. The people that I do anything with are great. Most people try to help you out if you need help or are looking for someone to hang out with for the day. Unlike RL, there is always someone there to talk to or go monster bashing with. A lot of my friends are busy in RL with jobs and families and what have you, but here, there is always someone to pal around with or at the very least you can enjoy the adventure of killing a baddie by yourself which is more fun than sitting at home watching TV or twiddling your thumbs.. Plus lighting monsters on fire with magic is cool...

On the best days the people are a huge part of it.

But as a long time player I think the thing that feeds my addiction the most is the problem solving. Suits, gear, pets, skills... how each character interacts with the world and what all combinations you can produce within the sand box to maximize the effectiveness of that set of variables on the world in which they act towards the purpose you define.

Definitely the first reason I play is for the interaction with other players. Where else could you meet people everyday that are from all over the world and interact with them in an enjoyable manner?

Second reason would be for the sense of accomplishment you feel playing UO. In real life it seems you go to work, you come home and work, you go to sleep thinking about all the work you have to do the next day, and most of the time, it all is never completed. On UO you can complete tasks or goals you set for yourself and not feel the pressure of time limitations.

Lastly, it is for us anyhow, recreation for the family. We don't have to leave the house, dress up, or make sure that the entire house is in order, before our friends arrive. (Don't have to have veggie trays made ahead either). We can simply play a game with friends right from our own home without the fuss!

Honestly, all of this really is secondary to the true reason I play UO...I can mess with Gunner everyday even though he is hundreds of miles away, give him crap whether he needs it or not, and harass him daily in a legal manner...what more could a person want?

I found out that there are truly different reasons for guys to play here than the ladies. For case in point I created a female character and played a bank sitter for a week on Legends. All of these femm chars would come up and want to start a conversation. Now realize I play the pirate char because that is the RL personality that I have. I once had a co-worker write me up for being unfriendly. My supervisor sent him an email saying not to take it personally because He (me) hates everybody equally. I only lasted a week with the femm character because it absolutely drove me crazy that every where I went someone wanted to talk to me. I am here because I can go off into the expanse of the game and do absolutely nothing for hours. "No phone, no lights, no motor cars, Not a single luxury, Like Robinson Crusoe,

i used to play because i had RL friends playing and that made it fun (back in 2000 when i began). You play and crack on each other when in the game and even more when in RL. I stopped playing back in 02, came back just recently (weeks ago actually) for no appearent reason at all. i simply became a tad bored playing console games on my own and then as i was cleaning out my old PC games i came across my original Samurai empire cd and case. All of sudden i was hit with this funny feeling, started thinking about all those fun times i had. I decided to try and log in once more and see if the game was still around, not if people still played, but rather if the game even existed. lol. found out that yes, in fact it was still alive and kicking. Decided to re-sign up and see what was knew....man was i in for a suprise, it's like a totally new game and now that is my drive, to see it all. Funny thing is that i played for about 2 years without actually seeing the world and doing the quests, i was more involved in guild fighting and being silly with my friends and now my objective is to actually learn the game. This as you can imagine opened up a whole new gaming experience to me. In short UO rocks. No other MMORPG compares to it. It was the first and will continue to be the best.

Back in '95 I had a motorcycle accident that changed my life. Had to learn computers as a new occupation. Since I was stuck at home recovering from injuries I took up computer games as a hobby while I was learning to fix them.

I played what I believe is the first online multi-player, Diablo. Met some friends there and thought it was fun to make friends online and play a game together. Then they all got into UO when it opened. I followed 2-3 months later, got the game for x-mas. Few months later I was out hunting one night with some guy and when we were done i asked him where he lived, he said Moscow, I asked as in Georgia? he said no Russia. I thought, this is cool, playing a game in real time with people from all over the world. Been hooked on online gaming since.

I don't have any particular friends I play with anymore because I hardly play UO anymore. I still play UO because quite frankly there isn't anything else out there that can hold my interest. My old friends from Diablo went to play WoW, which I can't stand, in fact I have several RL co-workers who play WoW and I still won't do it. I've tried almost every MMORPH out there that I have the slightest interest in the premise of, and the only one I ever liked, Auto Assault, closed.

So I've always kept my main account open and my secondary for over 5 years now, and when ever I need something to do I hop on UO and kill stuff or work on my houses etc. I spend a weekend mining occasionally to relax... I've been taming a lot lately because it's relaxing and it helps the zoo, and I'm determined to get my tamer to 120 real skill one day.

Actually liking SA though, had fun in the Abyss and doing Medusa with everyone. Hope I didn't embarrass myself too much, haven't played with a group since I beta tested KR. Haven't tried a new dungeon since I beta tested ML. Think I may clean up and sort through my stuff and think about joining one of your guilds... Make UO fun again, not just a habit.

Sorry for the long post but "Why do you play UO?" is a bit complicated to answer when you've played for 12 years.

Sadly tho this new expansion has almost opposite effect for me. Just an overwhelming amount of new content and I still have'nt gotten used to the past 3 years I missed so it's kinda like my first encounter with a pool. I imagine once I get started It'll be fun.

But dang, to answer question, I'd have to say nostalgic reasons is what keeps me around. Too many years have past and UO still comes up when hanging out with RL friends who have quit or moved on...."remeber that time in T2A..." it's almost scary cuz friend who never played will be like wtf you all talking about!? and we just share a laugh with a far away look remebering friends, battles, accomplishments in game and the number of sleepless night clacking away on a key board surrounded by empty soda cans that end up turning into ash trays.

dang...had really good times in UO.

But for now, this new expansion and preparing to open up new bar is keeping me away.
Hope everyone has fun! UO is expensive but the memories are priceless. ^.^
