Why do we have GMs anyway?

Its no like they DO anything anymore, not like the "old days".
I paged tonight after seeing a locked boat with FREED packies on it which is clearly against the rules As stated here from Knowledge Base:

It is not legal to block NPC's or monsters with objects. The deliberate blocking of monsters or NPC’s with objects such as boats, crates, house tiles, invisible pets or invisible players with the intent to gain an unfair advantage, like skill gain or monster killing is considered an exploit and can result in account penalties. This also applies to “animal pens” or “Safe areas” in the game world. If the animal/monster cannot damage you, then you are abusing the system and will be asked to stop.

As well, if you find an area blocked off by items that another player has left there to gain an advantage for taming or monster kill, we ask that you either destroy the items, or pick them up for later disposal. Using these items to your advantage, even though you did not place them yourself, is still considered exploiting.

However there are times in which we will allow this. If your home is set up to be a stable, or you are showing off various animals of Britannia and these animals are not being used to gain skill, attack other players (in Trammel), or provide any unfair advantage to you or others then it is ok to leave your pets/animals in your home. However, please be aware that a Game Master may remove any wild pets if those pets are found providing an unfair advantage to other players or are causing an issue with the game in that area. These decisions are made on a case by case basis and players should follow the decision made at the time.

I also foud this in the Knowledge Base:

You can leave pets in your house, but if they are not "refreshed" by being targeted or damaged, they will disappear. If you have a pet you would like to keep, seek out a stable master or animal trainer and stable the pet. All animals and creatures are subject to decay, even pets. To prevent a pet from decaying, it must take damage or be targeted periodically. If a creature is not targeted, or takes no damage, for approximately 2 hours (the amount of time can vary), the creature will decay and disappear. You can target your pet using a skill such as Animal Lore, Anatomy, or Evaluate Intelligence.

Well after sitting in queue for an hour the GMs will "Looking into the account and take action if warranted..yadda yadda yadda. Translation we ain't gonna do jack so shut up already noob. As has been said MANY times in Uhall the GMs are worthless and pointless, why not just legalize cheating, scripting, duping, greifing etc. It's not like the rules are being enforced anymore anyway.
Am I alone in my despair? Anybody else beginning to feel this way? Okay speak out tell me what ya'll think. *Pulls on flame resistant suit...HA!*

You're right 1 hour is good.
Its just flusterating when they don't do doodly-squatt. I mean instead of the usually canned message why not just say "Go away noob, not going to do anything so quit interrupting my Coca-cola, donut break and Smoke break!" LMAO seriously I think the GM system is long overdue for a complete overhual. Just MHO.

I think they should start letting us begin to police our selves most players have played for a while and can see the signs of scripters and know what is right and wrong let there be 5 or 6 accounts that can be the "cops" and have to be logged in as such for so many hours a month if some one does not hit there hours they need over period of time they can be replaced by peops that want to would cost them 50 to 100 a month but would make way better customer relations and promote uo as a game that's still policed
just my opinion Pan ls shard

Unless the person had those pack animals training and lost connection and the packies went stray...

I love how some people love to blow the whistle every chance they get without ever giving anything any consideration.

I hope some day you do something totally legit that puts you in a position like this where someone else pages on you and you get jailed for not even really breaking the rules.

If it was a truely voluntary system, you'd get nothing except satisfaction and your name known.

Hopefully we will see some sort of system like this, but since the demise of event moderators I reckon that the barrier between players and developers is going to remain solid, bar the odd post now and then on Stratics.

Been there, done that, got jailed.
I was mining on my happy little miner guy. I had a Macro set so all I had to do was find a spot and hit F8 over and over. Some person paged on my for UMing because I didn't FEEL like talking to him. ho-hum whatever, I got pulled into UO jail throughly question by the GM and ROR...that is "Released on my recognizance." the secong time I fell asleep at the keyboard mining(well it is a little boring) and my hand was still pressing the F8 button LMAO! Same thing except GM told me that maybe I should go to bed, hmm? So guess what if you obey the rules and keep your virtual nose clean, the GMs will have NO reason to "BUST" ya!

It's unfortunate but it's the shocking reality of it. Scripters get away with murder while the average joe gets in trouble for just dosing off at the keyboard. They need to either put a real stop to it or just stop pretending to care about it. Honestly, most skills are boring to train anyway so why harrass some poor guy just working on his magery or something. Just take down those people who script for runics and such and leave the rest be.

So ...

"with the intent to gain an unfair advantage, like skill gain or monster killing is considered an exploit and can result in account penalties."

these freed packies ...
were being USED how ?
you know ... like the rule quoted ...
what "unfair advantage"?

Why Didn't you put them to sleep ?
(Lack of a ranged combat skill don't count ... you could have nagged them to death
)
(As well, if you find an area blocked off by items that another player has left there to gain an advantage for taming or monster kill, we ask that you either destroy the items, or pick them up for later disposal. Using these items to your advantage, even though you did not place them yourself, is still considered exploiting.)

Besides ...
"These decisions are made on a case by case basis and players should follow the decision made at the time."
Why didn't you ? (Take the Rare GM reply ... move on ...)

Why the rant ?
accomplished nothing but feed the "UO Failing trolls"

I have to agree.. how were these packies hurting anyone and was someone getting some kind of gain by them being there?

You do realize that if these packies bothered you so much, you could have killed them, since they were freed. they should have been gray. problem solved.

I would hate to see a player police force in game! What a nightmare/disaster that would be for them. Imagine if you would, every time one of these "cops" goes on "patrol" for some deemed infraction, they would be harrassed to no end. Or some shard wide event? Forget about getting any cooperation (healing/rezzing/community killing).. most peeps would leave them to be monster mash.. or worse.. ganked repeatedly and mercilessly in Fel.

Same thing I say to everyone that complains about other peoples actions...

How does this affect you directly? Seeing the answer is...it doesn't, you should possibly just drop it. Life is to short to freak out everytime somone does something you do not like unless it affects you directly.

I can totally not see any abuses being used by giving players GM powers.

Plausible deniability and absense of liability. There ARE people who would man counselor posts without even free game time. The basics of counselorhood were seldom about punishing people. Perhaps they should have player representatives whose page to a GM always goes to #1 priority if they use a magic 'community concern' button. Oh they could so easily institute some sort of counselor/player rep program again, but remember, these systems encroach on the magic phrases at the top of this paragraph. I still would go for an invulnerable blue cloaked anonymous 'counselor' character who has the power to 'answer questions', teleport with consent, such and such benign instructive powers as that, and direct contact with the GM staff if needed. The benefit of these wise people was not to punish, but to filter out in a helpful way all the 'I can't find my horse' and 'How do I check my storage?' bs that the help system gets thrown at it. But ah, not going to happen again. prove me wrong! Would like to be wrong.
