Why do Ettins in Despise Trammel follow my character up the stairs to the entrance?

I got out my archer and thought well I'll go train him in Despise Trammel Ettins. Unfortunately, what happens is that the Ettins seem to have developed the habit of following players up the stairs, particularly if they're close to them it seems.

I'm not going to have much luck training my archer while the ettins are doing this, I thought they were supposed to stay at the bottom level of Despise and not get transported up stairs?

I play on Oceania, and reported this as a bug. Has anyone seen this happening on other shards? If so please put in a bug report with details.

Although I cannot say that I have seen this, rather than it being a bug, I would list it more as a smarter AI (assuming that the Ettins never before used to follw characters up the stairs.

To me it makes more sense to have the Ettins follow characters upstairs rather than have them "me chase ugly human. but human run up steppy thingy. me not know how to walk up steppy thingy. I guess I just stand here and let human turn me into pion cushion."

Ettins have always done that, if they're close enough and aggressed on you. The lizardmen do it too.
As far as I'm aware it's not a bug.

They didn't always do that, but it was an intentional addition. People wanted a smarter AI, but the Devs back then didn't want the mess that would come with allowing spawn to follow you outside a dungeon and kill everyone AFK out there (training MOBs and abuse). Actually, I think they tried it very, very briefly. (Of course, those were the days when there were players there and all over the place. Those of you who missed that really missed some great times.)

Personally, I wish they'd add a better AI, have MOBs follow you outside a dungeon, but if they can't engage the player they follow outside right away they'd run right back in.

One of the problems that led to this was the way players would use entrances to escape. It just makes it too easy. But MOBs now stick around at the entrance waiting to bushwhack you when you come back in, so there's that.

Ettins are desperately lonely creatures in spite of, and yet because of, having two heads.

Usually one dominant head has more control over the major bodily functions, like walking around and smacking things. This leaves the other head with a lot of time on its hands, so to speak, and it passes that time by filling every waking moment with mindless conversation.

If you've ever been on a long drive with a passenger who won't sit still, shut up, or quit fiddling with the radio, you'll be familiar with the phenomenon.

Add to that annoyance the fact that these two heads are fixed to the same body, therefore they have almost identical daily experiences. That leaves very little leeway for fresh conversation. Almost every remark can be answered with "I know."

Also, Ettins generally don't enjoy the company of other Ettins as they have identical problems. They usually end up complaining about their other heads which just leads to quarreling - literally - among themselves.

This is why Ettins seek the company of strangers and are willing to follow them outside the safety of their home in Despise.

Wow, you need to write a book if you typed that off your head. :] Makes complete sense too. Don't know that much dept into story line but it works. :thumbup1: Good post.

No where near as annoying as the spawn in Bedlam.

If you enter, get targetted, then leave, the spawn will retreat (particularly the named spawn) to the far north-west of the area. And then will move down (regular spawn too) at almost paragon speed to you, even though you are about 3 screens away and even if you enter the dungeon invissed, when the spawn will just sit next to you whilst you are invissed. And then sometimes the spawn will randomly ignore you, it'll come up to you, but not attack.

A couple of old dungeons such as Deciet and Despise have the original teleporters which let anything go through. A very long time ago it was changed so that only players could activate teleporters and most of the ones in dungeons were changed to the newer type. A few were missed.
