Why all the thief hate?

Question: Why all the thief hate?

We steal, what, ONE item from you, you chase us, we get away, we laugh and bank it, you get upset (but not that upset).

However, when we fail, we get looted dry. You take my 2k gold Horned suit and trash it, take my +stealing jewelry, and think nothing more than "Glad that thief is dead and gone".

Yet when you get ganked by a group of people, they take ALL your stuff, and sell it back for boatloads of cash (I hear 1mill per suit).

Why do you have to take my stealing jewelry or my horned suit, you won't use it, you take it to hurt me, I ask you why?

Why not look at stealing as a weaker form of PvP? I cannot win in a fight vs you, I can steal an item and get away, thats about it.

There seems to be a nice code of conduct regarding selling PvP gear back, why not put one in for stealing also? (Sell me back my horned suit, 2k deal?)

I'm not sure where I wanted this post to go, but there is so much thief hate on the ONLY shard where stealing really works like its supposed to, I ask you rethink your methods, and not hold so much hate towards us, cuz in the long run its one item, and its your fault you didn't properly store it...

Oh and thieves are people too, if you're not a ******bag (el devil?) I'd probably sell your item(s) back. Don't just trash talk me because I stole your sidearm and got away with it. maybe come across as a decent person, acknowledge you got stolen from fair and square (and maybe compliment my eyes and swift hands ;D) and I'll definitely show you some respect back.

I didn't mean this post to seem like I am whining, in fact I hardly ever die, I just wanted to know why people hate us thieves.

Many people cuss, complain, and make fun of us after a steal, and I just didn't understand why (when other people, take more stuff, are more ******bag-like, etc)

I think it can be equated to this:

PvPers hate fighting stealth PvPers because they are hard to catch and kill, which makes their loot hard to obtain. We HATE fighting these characters.

So imagine if these PvPers did what they did naked, and managed to take our items with little danger to themselves.

I played a thug-thief all through UO:R on Chessy, hands down funnest time I have had on UO, but many people just hate them.

Very good point, however thieves who steal naked should not expect to get what they are after (getting 2-3 shot that is) It's why I carry cures, heals, bombs, regs, and what ever suit I can get my hands on.

But I agree, I say lets just remember we are all people, and treat each other accordingly.

Most thiefs will roll naken, or with cheap GM armor, and try and take things of value. So for us to kill you, there isnt much gain here. Same as a naked tamer!

For some reason that utterly escapes me (egg nog fumes, perhaps?) I feel compelled to inject some sanity into this discussion. I am sorry. I don't know what's come over me. In any case:

When someone chooses to play a thief, they have to understand that they are painting a target on their backs. The pure nature of the character is someone who takes other people's possessions without permission.

In this game, there is no 'parry' against thieves. You cannot wear a +70 thief resist suit. You cannot drink a potion of thief protection. The best you can do is walk around with empty pockets all the time, or hope to catch the thief after he has committed the deed.

When faced with a situation like this, the average warrior does not know how to react. His idea of a fair fight is one in which he has at least a 50% chance of winning.

The thief's fight - at least, to the warrior's eyes - is over in one movement. He does not get to see the time, the planning, the effort that goes into the theft.

He therefore sees it as an unfair fight, and proceeds to exact a terrible vengeance on the thief.

This is the psychology of the matter. Few have successfully won this battle of hearts and minds, and still walked away with jingling pockets.

To the thieves out there, I can only suggest one thing - appear more human. It is harder to beat the living daylights out of a friendly face than a leering one. (Harder, but not impossible.) Toss some role-play in. Joke with your mark a bit. Give HIM a chance to buy his items back. Offer him something utterly useless (but funny) just before robbing him.

Or, if you prefer to play the leering thief, find a partner in crime. Pass off the stolen goods as fast as possible, let your partner bank the item, and make sure you are carrying nothing of value yourself.

But, as long as you are a thief, there is a target on your back. It will not go away. Your job is to make it as small a target as possible, by any means possible.

Good luck. You'll need it.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled Christmas ranting.

hey, i dont hate you guys, As the guild's red archer it is my job to kill yall regularly, but on the other hand you guys steal sidearms like they are going outta style. Although we all hate having nice stuff disappear, the theive's on seige keep it interesting... As far as buybacks go... I think you have a couple of havik's ubw warforks.... What you want for em?

Booglers regarding Blindeside, do like the rest of us *IGNORE HIM*. My experience with alot of thieves is that ones they do get my items, they dont just laugh they taunt and when I dont get upset and just ask to buy it back they trash talk me and still dont sell it back. Hence why I have no problem in killing and taking their items even though I dont need em. Ill be happy to offer a buy back, but then again the few times I have done that I just get more trash thrown at me and any numbers of curses usually followed up with "I am a thief, ill steal what I need"!

But hey Im all for treating thiefs more like any other player I pvp with, it just dont like the one way street it seems to be.

The reason I loot any thief I kill dry (and all I do is trash the items) is due to the fact that UO has a major problem regarding how to handle stealing! If I kill you, you keep my item! WRONG!

As far as you 2k suits, if your a good thief, you should be able to steal items worth $$$

If you are having problems being hated, try a new temp! Lama Herders are loved by all!

i like being hated...

dont worry about your stuff boogz, we'll get you more. when i first started thievin i got pissed the first couple times i lost jewls and lrc, but it really doesnt matter. just dye a death robe, bless the bandana, and wear some arcane boots. thats all you need for most situations. if you do get poisoned... run away in time to cure with spell... or die and come back. as for the armor, i took jareths advice and put 100 resist on my char for the 40 base resists naked. i dont worry about para because, well. i think i have been paraed once since i made this thief.

but ya, i like the thief hate. it allows me to see who on this shard really are lame asses lol. aside from once in a blue moon, how often do they really lose something of real value to a thief? not often, the crybabys who get butthurt are just lame and that makes em even more fun to steal from. i love stealing from fanta/duracell. hes a baby when it comes to talkin about thieves, but he is also pretty good at thief defense (sometimes) and he kills me pretty often. dying sucks, but it makes the hunt alot more fun haha.

oh ya... i got called a scorpion last night.... wtf? lol

i dunno if i still have any of em, but i did recently put all the warforks i have acquired for sale on my vendor in barter town for 100k each. i think all of em got bought up, but i know some other guys have a few (esp boogz - side arm extraorandaire lol).

as far as buybacks go for everyone i steal from, you can always ask if i will sell it back, i probably will, but you have to ask. i think this goes for most of us really. i think the only thing we might offer to buyback right after a steal would be faction gear.

Here's a hint: Stop stealing in the guard zone with items you may not wish to lose. It's pretty simple stuff that most thieves already know. I'm just guessing here, but are you new to the thief profession? If not, you should grow a thicker skin...much much thicker...la

Last night's Christmas Caroling Event went as I expected...
If fact I expected thieves to steal all those Greater Explosive, Greater
Conflagrations, Invisibility, etc potions I had in my back pack.
I visioned thieves using these at the last moment against that
irratable pursuer. But, no one did...

I did made it possible via Gates for some to return to the Zento bank
and access to their vaults.

I knew the policy of the reds was kill and dry loot... so did the head Lady,
who kept her pride regardless of the statis of her clothing.
Do players actually use macros to loot faster? Thieves want to know!

Siege Perilous is perilous and players did what I expected.

As for Hate...it is better than indifference.

lol, ya. that is mostly new thieves. its alright though, everyone is new at one point or another. the regs, pots, bandiads, and rune stealing, thats all mostly to just practice makin the steal. if they dont practice on that stuff, how can they be sure they will be able to snag the next PS or nice wep that floats their way. so, this will always happen as long as there are new thieves around. and the snooping, well, atleast you get a heads up hehe. no matter what, then you got to the bank, there is like a 99% chance that you have been snooped atleast once before you even get your bank box open, hehe

My 2nd char was a theif, back pre-aos, he was just at 61 stealing and like 80 wrestling (I remember my first disarm steal, good times), that being said my skin is thick enough, I've been called names I dare not repeat...

and I'd say less than half my steals are "in the guard zone" most are outside amongst the pvp'ers, but enough defending my stealing ability...

Maybe the original idea got lost in this thread, so i'll try and clear it up.

We thieves are people too, just remember that, next time you trash our stuff ask your self, "should I trash this, or maybe have him dance for it back, or even buy it back..." and if you do trash it, well poop on you?

Anyways, we can end this discussion, I was simply trying to point out that people will cuss, whine, and hunt thieves down with little to zero reason (unless we have something of yours, then hunt us down all you want! ^_^); and was trying to give a thought out, developed post to maybe delve a little deeper into the issue of treating thieves like garbage.

Thieves will always get a bad rap. What do thieves do? They steal from players who for the most part are minding their own business. Why wouldn't they get upset? With that said, I always enjoyed getting my marks upset. That's why I enjoyed playing a thief. If you don't like getting bad mouthed. I will suggest quitting the profession...la

Again, I don't mind people getting mad, bad mouthing me, etc, I get a rush when I steal something and live to tell about it (and more often than not enjoy them yelling at me when there is nothing they can do).

Its more about the fact that if instead of hating us, they treated us with a little more... humanity... we might have a more enjoyable experience for everyone (buybacks, laughs, etc)

Its safe to say that the PvP'ers hate one another, and when they kill each other I'm sure they are excited and happy etc, trash talk, blah blah, but in the end they sell the stuff back (most of the time?) and everyone walks away knowing they had fun and enjoy the aspects the game has to offer (good and bad), apply that to stealing I say...boo

meh, most people are pretty decent to us thieves though. there are a few ******bags out there, but they do stuff to us, we pick on them more. it evens out. for the most part, we deserve this treatment hehe. i know i can be a total ******, but it just makes it more fun! hehe. the fact of the matter is, most of the time us thieves have little to lose, since we squirell away all the good stuff before it can be reclaimed. that being said, if someone does happen to kill us and nab all of our GM armor and jewls, if they decide to trash it, its ok. plenty of thieves to hook you up with more stuff, and while you yourself may not have dry looted this person before, chances are another thief has, so in their mind its justified. anyways, on the bright side, being a thief doesnt make you perma grey! lol, that would totally suck. you think we got a target on us now as blues, its 1 millionx worse when we are freely attackable (like the 2 horrible times i slipped up and went red haha). its hard enough stayin alive, let alone getting any decent steals.

Boogy, how can you play a thief and then be surprised people dislike and treat you poorly?

That my friend is just plain silly! You steal from people...hence the treatment!

Quick story about the good old days!

Back in the day on Chessy, my Rl best friend and I had chars named Goldberg, we both had Item Deed Blessed Spears and boy did we kill thieves! They would try and try to disarm steal the weapons and it took alot of them weeks to figure out the "blessed part"

Boogz who is so mean to you? I get killed once in awhile but rarely trash talked and anything on me I expect to lose being a thief (hence the GM resisting spells saves on armour). Most people want to chat after Im done being grey and get a kick out of the chase, in fact the rudest people I have encountered are fellow thieves over the years...
