What is Blackrock for?

I mined up my first piece of Blackrock...what is it used for?

I see people sell it for a high price on their vendors.

Forgive my ignorance....I took a few years off from UO and just started playing UO again a couple of months ago.

Currently it's being used to cast armageddon on the ethereal shadow lords in the rift. It does enough damage to get whoever casts it one of the 3 cloaks that drop when it dies, provided you're in the rift (dead or alive) when it dies.

If you've left the rift to get rezed and are in normal Glow when it dies you don't get one.

To cast the spell you simply say the words: Vas Kal An Mani In Corp Hur Tym while having blackrock in your pack

I cast it on one on Europa, then died when it was just under half health. I hung around dead till the others attacking it killed it. When I rezed I got the cloak in my pack.

Besides the rift thing, I heard something about how you can "turn in" Blackrock somewhere.

Just put a dozen pieces on vendor at pawn shop.

The turn it was several months ago in Occla. But no longer available if I remember correctly.
