What is a good "gamer's" mouse

I am looking for longevity as well as playability.

I have seriously been through three this year. My PC area is clean and I can't figure it out.

What mouse do you swear by?

I play 10-20 hours per week and I am going through too many mice. One was old. The other was storebought and this one was used from work when they switched them out.

I swear by my "Cordless Internet Pro" by Logitech. It is a Cordless Keyboard & Mouse Combo with one receiver for both that has a range of about 10-15 feet. I have had it several years now, spilled dew, candle wax, and beef stew all over the keyboard and mouse and they still work like new (after a bit of cleaning anyway).

In my opinion, Logitech is the best of the best.

I'd suggest the Logitech g5 gaming mouse.

Programmable buttons

Customizable weight through small weights that can be placed in an insertable tray.

Tilt scroll

My only gripe is that it only has one button on the left side but I use the tilt feature to make up for it.

Totally agree with Orvago.

I've installed countless keyboards and mice of all types as a technician, and have always found the Logitech devices to be easily installed and long-lasting. Some of the other brands out there just flat out didn't work, especially with the wireless devices. I'm running a wireless combo from Kensington at home, and it's been working very well. So +1 for that brand, also.

I work in the medical field, so if it can survive the Transcriptionists, it can probably survive lots of gaming, too!

EDIT: Forgot to add, definately go with an Optical mouse...you don't have to worry with those little contacts getting dirty and affecting the mouse ball's movement.

I use a Razer Diamondback. Has a total of 7 programable buttons plus the scroll wheel up and down. Also has "On the fly sensitivity control" so you no longer have to go to your control panel to adjust the speed of your mouse. I also use a Logitech G15 Keyboard.

I'd rather stick with an optical/laser mouse than a ball mouse due to the "crud" factor. An optical mouse will not gum up nearly as much and tend to last much longer (I have a few still-functional optical mice that have the pant worn off the buttons from playing UO... I don't think I ever had a ball mouse last that long and stay reasonably responsive)

Optical wheelmouse ...

I had a Logitech one that finally died (left button croaked), replaced with a Dell one that was spare at work. Both were USB, not wireless.

Optical ... no little trackball to get crapped up, nor rollers to periodically clean. Can run on most any reasonably clean smooth surface nicely.

Cheap. Really cheap.

The last one I bought was a long time ago. I never liked it. Felt like the cursor on screen sometimes jumped around and sometimes not at all for small moves. They fix this problem?

Normal mice always felt more prcise to me.

optical, any day. works on just about any surface. I think it's more responsive. definitely don't miss the cleanup of old-style mouse parts.

The higher end optical mice are definitely more accurate and "precise" than the ol' track n' ball system. They get a lot more dpi than a traditional mouse can get. If your surface is crappy, it may mess with your pointer responsiveness.

But, all in all, optical mice are the best bet - just make sure they're wired (USB, please). Wireless mice tend to go dead when you need them the most.

I use the Creative Fatal1ty gaming series mouse keyboard and headset all have been of excellent quality and can take a serious beating. I break a whole lotta stuff and constantly went through all items listed above until I bought these.

I have to say that the keyboard is my favorite though. It has quarter stroke keys much like laptop keys and is practically indestructible.

The mouse is nice because it uses a laser pickup rather than infrared which is far faster and far more precise it is also wired which is fine because laser would kill your batteries pretty fast and I got tired of replacing them in the last one I owned. The last feature about the mouse I like is the fact it comes with interchangeable weights to me this is important because I prefer a heavy mouse but some people like a light mouse well this mouse allows you to choose the weight on it and effectively how it feels when you move it around.

The headset is pretty nice to but the only major features on it are the fact it has very very clear and clean sounding speakers. You can unplug the mic from it and use it without having the mic attached making it like any other set of headphones and it has a pretty high quality noise canceling mic on it.

Anyhow worth checking out if your serious about your equipment.

Cordless mice of all types are much better now than 1st gen cordless. Logitech makes the best cordless in the biz bar none. Logitech makes the best gaming mice... but there are others that are great too. These days, laser is the way to go... balled mice are a carryover from the past (a $10 optical is better than a $40 ball now).

You're asking about mice but have you ever tried a trackball type device? I used to do graphics a lot and found he sensitivity/control much better and also I get sore wrist/fingers less.

I use a Logitech trackball now. I have a little portable wireless mouse I bought and the dang thing doesn't work half the time.

I used the use those big Kensington trackballs and loved that but I am portable now and they are a little too big to lug around.

My Logitech ball mouse is almost 10 years old now and it still works
better than all the others I've tried.
I have tried Cordless mice, Optical mice, Track ball and about a dozen
others and keep comming back to the same mouse. My desk is not even
close to clean either.

Be sure you are using a clean mouse pad/surface and that it doesn't have reflective spots. Reflections can fool the sensor and fiddle with its sensitivity. Crud on the pad tends to make it less smooth too.

I use a gel mousepad, usually black, and take it and wash it every month or two.

I have an issue with head sets.

The wire goes out after a few months, and after about 15 sets of them, i want to find a good wireless headset. Or one with a cord that's like super heavy duty. Does anyone have any suggestions for me to scope out?

Not just headphones, a headset, mic included.

Yep. Me, too. Been using one since 1994 or thereabouts. Recently switched pc's, had to use a mouse for the first time in ages, and hated it, specially after repeatedly rolling it off the mouse pad and then the entire desk!! Believe me, that takes talent. Not! At least the trackball doesn't try to run away from me. No wonder the others are called "mice". Though, one time the trackball's marble got loose, rolled under the desk, across the room, and chased the cat before I could catch it. Now that part was funny.

I use a logitech mx518 I have had it for a little over 2 years and not a problem. My keyboard is a logitech G15 it is super durable I have spilled soda,beer,B-Water,coffee and still not a sticky or dead key. Wireless is ok depending on what you do in game. I would never rely on wireless myself considering I pvp.

I picked up a Raptor M2 some time ago.
The mouse is lovely to use, and it comes with additional weights you can add, to make the mouse heavier, for your preferences.
But, to be honest, it sucks quite massively.
Horizontal scroll breaks easily, the mouse "hangs" and requires unplugging and plugging back in, the software is terrible...
So, don't get one

If it is just for uo, any decent WIRED optical mouse will serve the purpose.

I have gone through exactly TWO mice since i started playing uo. One was a logitech wired optical, and eventually the left click stopped working so great, and i bought a wired microsoft optical mouse.

All these mice with loads of buttons, programmable buttons, etc etc.. IMO they are just a waste of time. Im sure they are effective, and i know some of them have incredible sensitivity etc. But.. i feel that the more buttons etc it is just automaticing things. It's not cheating but.. i think old fashioned mice with two buttons and middle click/wheel is good enough for most games!

Unless you are looking for any type of edge over oponents, a normal mouse will suit your purpose! And for uo, this goes double

One thing about wireless mice...

My Kensington Wireless Combo that I'm currently using hasn't given me any problems, and has some nice features like auto-shut off after some time of activity. One thing I've noticed, though, is the consumption of batteries by the mouse...it's one hungry critter! The Keyboard hasn't needed a new battery at all, but the mouse has gone through at least two packages of AAA's. I keep a spare set at the desk. I change the batteries as soon as the mouse lets me know it's getting low (the wheel lights up bright red).

If you go wireless, you might want to keep a spare USB corded mouse around, just in case! I always have my old Logitech Optical "tailed" mouse nearby in case of equipment emergency. Even with the wireless mouse connected up, I can plug the older USB mouse right in without a problem.

I had one of those buggers and it about killed my poor thumb. I actually bought it for my mom to be her first trackball and she complained of how painful it was to I got her a new mouse and used that bugger for a while and it was no good for me either. With a trackball you use your fingertips and so it's very agile.

It's really all about the angle your wrist is to the desktop, make an adjustment in your seat height can make a difference.

I appreciate your guys input... I went with a Logitech MX400... a laser, wired mouse. This is my first balless mouse so I hope it is a good one.

I bought it after work today, and I should have printed up your guys' posts before I went bc I was like a helpless babe at Best Buy. I remembered Logitech coming up quite a bit, so I focused on their products. They have some expensive mice!! I never would have imagined. This one was $54.00

1.) Any opinions on this mouse?... hopefully success stories.

Also, I lied in the OP. My desk is not clean. It is dirty, grimy and dusty. I was used to cleaning the balls of my old mice, but now I am nervous.
2.) Can you clean the laser mouse? It seems so exposed ... they should ahve a clear plastic cover on the bottom.

3.) My mousepad is old (dirty, grimy and dusty).. is it imperative? Can I use a book or something instead?

You dont need a mouse pad for a Lazer mouse. I only need to clean mine once in while when cat fur get in the lazer hole i eithere just blow it out of use a Q tip.

Well I'm not familiar with the type but just from your post I would recommend staying out of redneck bars. Doesn't sound like your mouse will cover your back in a brawl.

I personally prefer the Microsoft equivalent, but it looks like they may not be making them anymore, which is unfortunate. The Logitech version is nice, though not as responsive and comfortable as Microsoft's model.

I Have run the gambit of mice over the years.

Microsoft mice, feel OK but they never seem to hold up over the long term.

Usually, I'm a huge logitech fan. However, for mice, I find the razer to be more comfortable and easy to use. I also gave up on cordless mice. They seem to last for a year or two and then start having random problems.

Since the switch to Razer mice, I have never had a problem. They always work flawlessly. I have even converted a couple friends into using razer mice.

Something just "feels" right with them. I would recommend you go try and see what feels the best in your hand. Are all the mouse buttons easy to access? Can you press all of them with ease to get the full function out of the mouse?

I can get used to any other input device but a mouse. For me a mouse has to feel right to use.
