What Inspired Your Forum/Character name(s)?

There are so many unique names on these forums and ingame that make me smile, laugh, and in general make me curious to how they came to be.

My name is derived from my first and middle name. Some of my character ingame names are inspired by the very complex Layne Staley
- lead singer of Alice in Chains and of Mad Season quite a few years back.

I have also used this Medieval Name Generator - it comes up with some pretty cool names .

The wife started playing first, and it looked intriguing. So I decided to create a char on her account, for me to play. Only thing I knew for sure was I wanted to be a mage, that just seemed so cool! Got to the screen to name him tho, and got stuck. Didnt want to be Merlin, or a name that was gonna be ingame all over the place, wanted something unique. And as I sat there with "The Magician's Birthday" by Uriah Heep playing on the turntable across the room, well, it was just one of those Aha! moments And the rest is history.

I'll try to make it short.

My brother and i players RPG games together. Then one day we got one and we had to give our character a name. So we combined our Real names Freddy and Marc Became Frarc.
When we started to Play UO with 1 account we used that name . But after some time i wanted my own account but i also wanted to be the Frarc.
We came up with a story to explain our name and the fact there are 2 Frarc's. The Chronicles of The Frarc.

It was very confusing for many people to know who was who. So after a time my brother took the nickname The Frarc and i took New Frarc.

Being married twice I have a few named X Wife. Seems no matter how bad or cheap their death. It really doesn't bother me when they die.

Forum name comes from my real name and surname.

Now, my characters names were a play on Zatanna Zatara.
I changed a few letters of her surname when naming my mage, along with a word play on the name Mandrake, and the name stuck. Then people shortened it and it stuck, so I named pretty much all my other characters that way, with the surname kinda giving away their profession.

My last name is Watson, and since i was a child i was called Winker after Winker Watson from the comic book the Dandy.

So from an early age i adoped the persona of Winker and can i just say its got me into no end of bother ever since.

I love these threads

Larisa is very boring...my first character ever created in UO. I had no clue...I HATE trying to come up with unique names it's so HARD! I don't even know why I chose it, it just sounded very pretty, my real name is Lauri so it's similar.

After playing for awhile, I brought my old RPG name in. I played the pen and paper RPG's as well, dice and all..and was a member of IFGS for a long time. Maharia Vashti was a half-elven/half-human girl, banished by her people because she wasn't pure at the age of 16. In UO she's human, little did I know they were going to be bringing Elves into the land back when I created her but I retained her back-story, and when I had the player-run town of New Dawn on Origin I built up on that. Her marriage and subsequent death of her husband is still in her paperdoll profile, but because the name Maharia Vashti was too long, I just named her Maharia.

Later on I got more creative....as with most people I wanted to be unique. Back when you could moosh a bunch of random skills together and make a viable template, I had character with Archery, ninjitsu, stealing, Stealth, Hiding, Chiv, Healing....and a few other things lol that I named Shrouded Darknes...couldn't fit the last *s* on there unfortunately.

I had a male necro mage named Malicious Intent, my crafter is Tinkerbell...because Tinkerbell was a tinker fairy. Her pet beetles are named Wendy and Peter Pan.

My first bard was named Harmony, she's still over on Napa where I started my journey into the lands of Sosaria, as well as my first crafter Carla who never made it to 120 Smith/Tailor because Origin came out and I moved.

Sevin is from "sevin dust", an old school poison. "0oo0" is ghost speak for Dead - or oo=eyes and the 0's are ears.
Sounder (my other forum name) is the name of a dog, a classic, like Old Yeller.

hehe thanks. Trouble is, it became a sort of tradition, and one my hubby copied. So whenever we made a new char, it had to have the same kind of name. I think his best one came with SE, when Bushido was introduced. His Irishman. Sam O'Rye.

My son named my first ever UO character. He is also the one that first got me onto Stratics Forums.
He created Queen Zen and simply said to me "She is so you mom ! "
He named her after all the stories I told my kids of growing up, sometimes when my father's factories closed down, my mom would sew me all sorts of pretty dresses and outfits so that even if poor times hit I would always feel like a *princess* ! As the kids grew up they heard that story, and a tv. show also came on about KungFu...and when they sometimes misbehaved or got confused I would comically sit them down and say something like...you have much to learn Grasshopper...like the old wise Zen dude on the kungfu tv show.
Sooooooooooooo my son UO beta player, created my first ever UO chr. Queen Zen to join him in UO when he was over seas in the US Navy. * Queen Zen is also only Stratics forum name, I have ever used.

As for his chrs. whom I took over his acct. they were often named after his tours of duty in the US Navy. Thus his Shalom Aleichem chr. means in hebrew *his tour of Isreal* something like peace be onto you.
His pk was named Dnepropetrovsk...from his tour of in & around the former Soviet Union.
Dnepropetrovsk is a city in the Ukraine or Russia somewhere..forget where but it is there still.
I played Dnep often and still own that guy...twas comic seeing someone in game shout ...I was pkd by...Whathisname Dn something. LOL He had chrs. named after other tribes of mankind like tribes of native americans too.

As for my own chrs. first male chr. I made on my acct. on Chessie and on Siege too, was 'Hughes of Gray'.
Simply I named him, that cuz we all see UO in [hues of grays].
My dead man walkin became my first spy or recon man on any shard I visit or remained upon.
And whom can pk a DEAD man walking, anyhow. lol
Sometimes I would go get myself killed or kill myself just to go...spying as my Hughes of Gray chr. !

I named my first female on Siege 'Miranda' ...named after the Miranda Rights.

Judge me not as a newbie here on siege or I will judge you...as an old UO vet coming TO Siege. lol SILENCE or maybe I kill you, with my tinker tools.

And my first ever made by me PK was one I named 'RAINBOW BRITE'...figured with growing up in a non trammel ruleset as UO once was, when they created Trammel, I would make me a chr. that looked like a rainbowy carebear trammie like...one that looked like a newb, trammel born, whom never knew what felucca or pvp was all about..and then, I'd PK the unsuspecting, with me a few times seeing em shout...
OMG I WAS KILLED BY RAINBOW BRITE. lol
Twas my sneaky way to fool a few of the old vets
thinkin I was just a *trammie* in felucca ! NOT ! ye are dead ye sucker. lol
I enjoyed playin Rainbow Brite, a LOT !~ LOL

And a few chrs. I have named after other things like my Eric Clapton the bard.
My Edgar Allen Poe the bardic scribe.
Silly chef, elf chr. I had named Keebler whom had no life but she made great UO cookies.
My confusing once pvping mage simply named 'PandoraDesiree', looks quite innocent or confusing, even alluring
just be careful trying to get her to open up to tell ya about herself or attacking any *pandora's box*
ye may see, or she may contain some spells, to kill ya.

And of course when folks on Ches. were creating spring festival events and were looking for a GM tailor to make sashes, for the spring fest held in Moonglow, I created a chr. gm'd her tailoring fast as I could, so every visitor to the Moonglow Springfest, had a UO sash crafted by.... a chr. named only simply,
MOONGLOW FESTIVAL !

Frarc - Read your cronicles Petra - Love your play on words too!

I have a red character on Chessy that was named by a friend, I wish I can remember how he came up with it, but I can't. Her main purpose was to be used by guildmates to gain justice, hence the only reason she became red; livng in a house in Fel that she was friended to with no fightng skills whatsoever! Last week I logged into to her for the first time in a few months and she was standing all alone in the grass by the lake - the house was gone! She is all alone, with the exception of panthers and gorillas walking back and forth with no runes, no runebook in her pack - nothing! I entertained the idea of running around and looking for a soft hearted soul that may take sympathy on me and gate me to an Inn, but I haven't yet started that journey yet, so for now I ran to the nearest tree and hid.

My father and I have been playing together since 1999. We have 3 accounts shared between us and his character names are far more Unique then mine but i will give you a few. These characters have never been deleted or renamed once they were created. Each have their own personality and I would feel a definate loss if I deleted them.

Stovakor - His main bard/spellweaver. "Stovakor" is the Klingon word for heaven.
Richard- My main Necro/Mage, took the name from the character on a comic website. "Looking For Group"
Mandorallen- My crafter, he started as a swordsman warrior. My older cousin who introduced me to the game was asking me what I wanted my characters name to be. I had no idea, so he reached over to his shelf of books and pulled out "The Belgariad" and the name Mandorallen was chosen.
M'Touk- pronounced Muh-Took, was a Unique name creation by my dad. This is his warrior Fencer, and he thinks this name suits better than "Stabby Stabby Cut Cut"
TEELOW - yes all caps, this was my fathers original warrior/Maceman. He is our oldest character, made the day we opened our first account. Another unique name made by my father.

King_Fisher my Stratics name is also the name of the theif I play. He started his Uo life as our Fisherman, a great fisherman. You could almost say "King-like". Now back in the day because you could only fish up boots/fish or the occasional SoS, his bank account dwindled. So now he is known to Fish in peoples pockets for items. He still fishes occasionally when the urge takes him.

 

[Leather Lucy]

Lucy Quickstitch was my first character's name (tailor/tamer heh). Always thought the name looked daft, especially when she ended up being a Swordswoman LOL.

Few years later I fancied another go at a tailor and came up with Leather Lucy, didn't intend the name to be 'saucy' I genuinely was looking for a decent tailor name LOL.

Moved to EQ after a while and made a druid, figured a tree name would suit, went for Willow which had gone so changed it to Wyllow, which eventually turned into Wyllow Darkwood when I could have a surname and that name has followed me through many a game ever since.

Whenever I make a mage type character in a game, they always end up being called Witchcraft hehe.

I used to play a pen and paper RPG called Rolemaster. I was creating a new character and I had the idea of what I wanted the character to be- in essence to be a true hunter, but noble and proud at the same time. My friend had a book of names and I came across this:
Nu'Sair
Meaning:
The Arabic name Nusair means - bird of prey

He ended up being my favorite character across 20+ years of role playing. Ever since, I have always named my first character in a new game Nu'Sair.

Well my first character was Willa... Whom I got because I recall reading the book that came with UO:R and it was talking about how important your characters name was and all and about Role-play which I was very much interested in... and I didn't really want to "swipe" a name out of some movie or book but I was having trouble coming up with anything and I was like OMG just pick something! So I looked on my shelves and saw the movie Willow.... I was like AH! that's it! Willa... and she was born of the woods and instantly seeing the Yew Trees in Yew I decided that she was to be a Wood elf... So down the road she became known as Willa of the Yew-wood which she's been ever since. Head of the house of the Yew-wood elves of GL's.

Now as for Malag... his name I chose from the Drow name creator... it litterally means something like "Malag-aste Hla-ate, The Keeper of Secrets of the house of the Walkers of the Way." And so he is the Keeper of Secrets. And of course if you ever asked him his name when he first arrived on GL's he would have told you it was, "Malag-aste Hla-ate, The Keeper of Secrets of the house of the Walkers of the Way, Prince of the Third house of Ra'Dashan" Because drow are kidna like that and they like titles and are very concerned about status and possition... Now however He is "Malag-aste Hla-ate, Keeper of Lore of the Royal Knights of Virtue and the Minister of Foreign Affairs to the High Council of Britannia."

And then there is Calibus, whos name comes from the movie Clash of the Titans... (the old one). But Calibus has many names, his deamon name Setatabon.... being very demon sounding, Xunroos the drow name for Demon Spawn, and L' Mortath d'lil Naut-elghinyrr which is "The Maker of the Undead." The name he is known by on his homeland because of his necro ability. But he is really an Incubus... spawn of a Succubus/Drow and Demon/Human... He's a mixed breed.

Then there is Krom my first smith because I thought about the movie Conan and Krom the god of the earth seemed appropriate for a smith... Who has a beetle named Conan.

Vincent my fisherman.... who sails the seas on "The Motley Cruezer".... because I'm a Crue Head and have been a Motley Crue fan for years.

Cainon... who's name comes from someone who I used to dream about when I was young.... his name was Cainon.

And then I couldn't possibly name all my other characters since there are literally 100's.

I still have 2 accounts one with mixed names and one with all names beginning with K, like my RL name.

Account one is Mary Magdalene (bard/mage), Brunhilde (blond swordswoman), stRIPer (redhaired archer and former PK, my BF named her and it shows), Yatis d'Elday (made up name, former archer turned necromancer, the only male in the family who came to being to escort one noble lady played by my, male, friend).

The Ks are: Karyatis (tamer), Kora de la Tour (fine crafter, de la tour is French for "from the tower"), Kassiopea (axewoman and honourable paladin), Karmina Burana (golddigger and part-time bard), and an alchemist/scribe girl... damn.

My first char was on my hubby's account, and tbh, I can't remember what I called her lol. When I opened my own, first I tried making a dexxer (I've had four tries now, it's never stuck for me) named Variel, who later had a sex change and became Selene a'Vahari my mule. Her sirname means (in a dialect from one of my many made-up worlds) 'of the desert', and of course Selene is the moon, so she is Desert Moon

Second came Samaira. I wanted to make a tamer, but had no idea what to call her. Hubby pushed me out of the way and tapped away at the keyboard, and Sam was born.

Then there's the Mi'ashar sisters, Za'rene and Emira. Funny sisters, one's human and the other's an elf! My bard (who used to be an archer lol) was supposed to be a Mi'ashar too, but it wouldn't fit so she's Androkama Deus. And last but not least is Nairadne. With the exception of Sam, these names all come from the twisted vault of my mind, wierd amalgamations of books I've read, the mythologies of several ancient cultures and the whim of my fingers

As an aside, I spend and inordinate amount of time dreaming up names for my pets too. Most I source from either my Japanese or Russian dictionaries.

Kylie Kinslayer: A name given to me by a Dungeon Master years ago, back when D&D reigned supreme . I had gotten stuck in a group with some folks I just could not stand. They were the whiny type folks, would take for friggen ever to make a decision and they just got on my last nerve. When I approached him to move to another group he initially said no, when I told him I was almost ready to bash their heads on the table he thought for a minute and said ok but had conditions. I would have to kill all 5 of their characters in a single battle {so the dice would play a huge role} and if I was victorious he reserved the right to rename my char. I figured what the heck. Won the battle, he tagged me with the Kinslayer and gave me the feminine first name as punishment *shrugs* ... It wasn't until I started playing UO that I found out he had "snagged" the Kinslayer tag from a book series. -Wheel of Time maybe? I dunno, started reading them then discovered George RR Martin's Song of Ice and Fire; Wheel fell by the wayside.

Rest of the K Kinslayers? - Ran short on imagination when naming them figured I would keep the pattern.

Levi the Alkie? - I like to RP the town drunk on occasion and needed a crafter. Figured the two worked well together.

phantus is a derivative of Fantus. When I first joined the forum I attempted to use Fantus but it was taken and thus prompted the change. Fantus was a pet(a fire drake) from the Raymond Feist's book Magician. All it did was eat and lay around and the only time it moved was during mating season. I thought it was funny

Normally I have character names that are film or musical influenced.

It does seem that every character name I've ever chosen was deemed 'questionable'
(at one point or another during the games lifetime).
I seem to remember at one time it was said that no copyright or trademark names were permissible?
Another time it was not using NPC similar names, because of perceived impersonation?

My real name, Dupre, certainly can be distracting when I've used it in game over the years!

Airmid Cecht - I was sold on her celtic lore and it felt right.

Jane Doe - because I was often toe tagged trying to keep up with Spoz and Reepacheap in Fel.

The rest - Usually based on creature and habitat. I had a drow with necro named Kiaransalee and I thoroughly enjoyed the evilness of her.

 

[Leira of Asrai]

I usually use a fantasy name generator or names from my favorite books 'Magician' and 'Wheel of Time'.

I wanted to name my Elf Tamer after the Asrai, which are a kind of fairy and are said to look like beautiful young maidens. It reminded me of the Pixies in the Forest of Spirituality in Ilshenar. I named my character after one of the Pixies I found there. Also my titles worked well on the character "The Glorious Lady Leira of Asrai".

My signature was created by a dear UO friend of mine. It captures the essence of this character perfectly.

I named Lug after a character from the movie Willow.

I thought the name was fitting because every female char I met in game (UO) turned out to be a man irl! (i can laugh about it now - but some you out there playing other gendered chars really are sick puppies!)

In the move Willow, Lug was hitting on woman in a bar. As it turned out this woman was really a man! (This woman played by val kilmer)

Lug wasnt happy when he found out the "she" he was hitting on was really a "he" and started yelling "Notta woman....? NOTTA WOMAN!!!" and then destroyed the bar in a rage.

I am into bio-medicine and genetics. My latest creation is the reason for my name. Ruppy (short for Ruby Puppy) is the world's first transgenic dog [1]. A cloned beagle, Ruppy and four other beagles we had produced a fluorescent protein that glows red upon excitation with ultraviolet light. The dog was cloned using viral transfection of fibroblasts cells with a protein that expresses the red fluorescent gene. The nucleus of the transfected fibroblast was then inserted into the enucleated oocyte of another dog, leading to generation of dog oocytes expressing the red fluorescent protein. These cloned embryos were then implanted into the uterus of a surrogate mother [1]. Our first ruppy puppy was then shipped to the north of Croatia where it was thoroughly examined by doctor Lisa Dajci who clarified that the puppy could in fact be classed in the dog species even though it had not been born 100 percent naturally it did still have all the characteristics of the species.

I have used Hunters Moon for years. In Native American time keeping,a hunters moon is typically said to be in November and December.I was born Nov 30th so about 25 years ago,I started using that moniker every chance I get. Even though obvious Native American physical features are not evident with me and my cousins,there is a strong tie to them from three generations back.

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien "The Hobbit". Read it in 1973 for the first time while on deployment. Have also read all of his other books but The Hobbit is by far my fav.

My character's names have historical or literary significance. They are predominately women. Sayyida al-Hurra, my pirate, was, in fact, a real life female pirate in the Western Mediterranean Sea during the 16th century.

Karen Blixen, my tamer, is named for the writer who wrote under the pen name Isak Dinesen. You may know one of her more famous works, "Out of Africa." My favorite work she penned; however, was a very short story called "The Blue Jar." Look it up, it's a great read.

Among my other characters in the game, two other notable names are Trung Nhi and Trung Trac, a necro-nox-mage and a treasure hunter, respectively. The sisters Trung served as queens of Viet Nam briefly during the 1st century. They fomented a rebellion against Chinese rule and fought Chinese armies successfully for two years. They were true warrior queens, well versed in the marshal arts. The rebellion failed eventually and they ended up committing suicide rather than surrendering to the Chinese victors. There have been many books and films about them and they are still hailed as heroes of legend in Viet Nam to this day.

"Chad Sexington" was the name of a guest character on an old episode of The Simpsons.

Serafi is my first character I made in UO and also my stratics name. It`s derived from this of course, but only as a name that works in the UO setting. I like the name so much now that I have used it in other games as well. She started out as a fierce tailormage Just loved that you could have such a combination in the game.

Roland of Gilead is the main Character in The Dark Tower book series by Stephen King.By far my fave series of book and Stephens Kings Master Work in my opinion.Also my char Kingleader i came up with that when i made a gaming clan for age of empires waaay back when and just carried it over to uo.He was my first char and i had intended to take the uo world by storm with the King Clan!!Then ofc there's Keenan my char i play the most.Im a singer in bands and the singer i most like and look up to in Maynard James Keenan from the bands Tool and A Perfect Circle.I like the names Maynard and Keenan. Always figuered if i had a son i'd name him Keenan but i had girls instead so had to be satisfied just using the name for uo

Cindy Moon : Cindy is the name of my brothers oldest daughter, I craeated tha tcharacter while there was a full moon outside my window.

Buzzz Buzzz : Came up with her name after i saw on the back of a town bus "Get Buzzy with a Buzzz pass".
Scorpio : Wanted that name for my poisoner. When we played Mortal Combat i always played with Scorpion.
MJ : He is my Bard, Short for Michael Jackson . I'm a fan.
Jigsaw : The Maniac from the Horror Movie Series Saw.
Tommeke Beans : English name coming from the Belgium Cyclist Tom Boonen
Belthazor : His name comes from the Daemon out of the TV series Charmed
Gabrielle :She amce fighter, named after Gabrielle from TV series Xena
Lucy Lawless : Actress name who played Xena. While i saw several Xenas ingame i took the acrice real name. Sounds good for a Amazon .
Mystique : My favorit female Character from X-men .
Yuriko Oyama : Again named from a character from X-men Comics.
Argo : The name of the ship from Jason and the Argonauts.
Jessica Goldfox: She now my tamer but Started as a fletcher. Jessica Fletcher is character from TV series Murder She Wrote.
Lara , Lisa and Yana van Sithi : The Sithi (called Zida'ya in their own tongue) are a cryptic, near-immortal elder race from the Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn trilogy by Tad Williams. If you read Frarc's Chronicles, The Sithi are the ones who made The Frarc.

Box Lighter : The right name for a T-hunter who blows up himself when opening a chest!
Sybille Scrible : My scribe.
Marc Rothgar : Named after Hrothgar from Beowulf. He is my axefighter. Marc is my brotehrs name.
Dark Angel: I gave that name to my character after someone said to my brother that i was a angel, he said yes a dark one. She is Frarc's Nemesis and servant of someone that is called The Guardian.

Pegasus Red and Maximillion Sun : Made a Samurai and Ninja, Last names combined are Red Sun. I like Mythologie , Pegasus is a flying horse. Maximillion is the name of a red robot in the movie The Black Hole. one of the first movies i saw in the theaters.

Janet Lebeau : Janet from Janet Jackson and Lebau comes from X-men Remy Lebeau (Gambit)
Inge Blackheart : Blackheart comes out of Marvel Comics.
Sandy Hurricane : She my fisherwoman.
Kim Tsunami : Needed something japanese sounding for a Samurai
Mac : Short for MacGyver . He is my werewolf.
Willem the third : Willem is dutch for William . William the third was a sovereign prince or orange. (Netherlands)
Gwendolyn : Just like the name sounds elvish.
Niki Silverstone : Niki name of somoen from work, Silverstone from F1 Circuit in UK.
Trex : My fighter name comes from T-Rex.
Ursula Harkonnen : Ursula is the name of the girl i lost my head the first time in school. Harkonnen from House Harkonnen from the Novel Dune .
Domino : A belgium group sings about a woman named Domino or so .
Jason Voorhees : My murderer. Walks around with Machette and a mask. Comes from Friday the 13th Horror movies.
Messenger : Just a character i use to drop of messages for my roleplaying stuff.

Santa Claus : He is based on the Real Santa and only appears around Christmas!

Two of mine are named for my kids middle names. The rest are either names from stories I've written or mixed up names from other stories. the issue is that I normally come up with the back story first for the characters (all rp mind you) and then the name itself. The name has to fit what the character is.

My real life nickname is Shelley, but my mom has always calls me Shelleybean. I just ran with it.
