Reforging...why would you ever put this in the game !!!? It has effectively killed any crafting , Ergo UO is on the downslide .why bother crafting or imbuing or enhancing?
Who needs it ,now with reforging you can have anything. Just get yourself a horned kit and off you go!!!

Soo now we have no need for crafting; then no need to vendor .Guess Ea finally found a way to kill off UO.

I won't even get into Factions ;just make yourself a red guild and go attacking

why bother ever doing bods again ...
could this be EA's way to get rid of UO?

This is just the final blow to crafting. What killed crafting and the general economy is blessed and insured items, aos itemization, and lrc suits. Those combined totally oblitterated a consumable economy. (which crafting is part of). Almost everything in this game is now no longer consumable. Way back when I started UO in 97, things got lost, misplaced, consumed, used, and thrown away. You also used reagents to cast spells. People consumed items, and people fulfilled other's consumed items. Crafters were always needed. Armor and Weapons were in super-high demand, as were reagents. Now? You can easily create a new character and go to shame and get decent stats from a pieced together suit. Or grab a horned kit like you said and whip up an awesome suit with little effort. Those pieces never get consumed. They never disappear. Sure I'll pay 417 gold to insure this gorget worth 3 million gold. Reagents? No longer do you grab 50 or 60 of each reagent and go hunting till you run out of nightshade and black pearl. Those are the things that ruined the economy, it's not just reforging.

I've seen no evidence Reforging is even used all that much.

There is also nothing being said about it that wasn't said about Imbuing, Enhancing, Runic Crafting (even the pre-AoS Runic Crafting), the new leathers (yes I still call them that), etc.

So it is, in all honesty, hard to take such statements all that seriously.

An excellent case could be made that Crafting was killed 15 or so years ago when the decision was made that furniture and other deco things that are made by Crafting would not wear out.

Easy to forget that Crafting means something other than "makes stuff to kill stuff with," eh?

I fail to see how reforging will destroy crafting anymore than other additions to UO. Why not any of the other skills/abilities prior to reforging? Are you seeing less and less players selling more since reforging? The market looks unchanged to me at least.

Almost everything in this game is now no longer consumable. Crafters were always needed.
If it means an end to BOD collecting, I say Bring It! Collecting 1000's of them is insane, developers know this or they wouldn't have gone to the trouble to make BOD books and 'legalize' storage vendors.
My stuff at home doesn't last forever, why shouldn't in-game items have durability, decay scaled on quality and use? a Smith's hammer has a finite number of uses, why is the forge exempt?
Crafters are needed Once, during a deco stage, then tossed to the side

I have done more crafting recently than i ever have. reforging is a gigantic bonus to crafters. between reforging and crafting i am constantly changing and updating suits. Just because crafting isnt the same as it was 14 years ago means nothing, crafting just evolved.

^ I agree with this. Reforging is just the new crafting method, and Ive seen plenty of crafters make good money now due to it. Vendors with reforged items/armor exist, and do pretty well.

Yeah, me too until I stopped logging in a few months ago. I was busier than I had been in years collecting, filling, upgrading and turning in BODs. I revamped some suits and there's still room for more work to my own suits.

There's always someone who'll say that whatever system was added or changed has ruined the game.

I just finished crafting woodland armour peices (100's) to get the resist spread I needed. Burned through 700 charges of runic saws that I had saved or bought from player vendors to get my baseline resists and extras, then I imbued the peices I chose (5 for the suit). In the run I used Ljing,Carpentry, Tinkering, Reforging, Imbuing, Carpentry again. And to top it all off since I refuse to buy those super tools that garentee success. I lost 3/5 Peices and 1 of the peices that was saved didnt have the Heartwood bonus I wanted. So guess what I'll be doing tomorrow?

And you tell me Crafting is ruined? Psshhh

The only thing re-forging is is odd, IMO. They try to lure us back to dungeons with Shame loot then they give us a better, no-curse way to get most of the Shame loot through crafting, plus they make BODs easier to do, which means easier powder and runics. If anything, re-forging killed PvM (again). When's the last time you heard anyone talk about the exciting new monsters in Shame or Wrong? ;D...oh well, THAT was a fun experiment...now it's back to exactly what we want with little to no RNG except break chance ;D

They are means to an end depending on your playstyle. Want to craft? Do bods to get runics, so you can reforge. Want to hunt? Do Shame/Wrong. Have gold and want to craft without bods? Buy the runics and reforge. Have gold but dont want to craft yourself? Buy the armor from other people.

You can still get loot from Shame/Wrong that's better than reforging. Not to mention things you cant reforge such as jewels. Shame and Wrong would be just as "forgotten" about as you are alluding to, when the next revamped dungeon comes out, or when the loot system is issued game wide.

reforging equals sales are up for runic kits and resources, i dont have to spend ******** amounts of gold or waste time farming arties that never really fit in the first place. as for the dungeon revamps, i go now more than i did before(cursed jewels are fine for trammel).

Technically what every post about crafting being "killed" breaks down to is the fact that everyone has their own crafter and has for a long time.

So people just get PO'd that they can't be a full time crafter anymore. Sorry it's not 1998 anymore.

Lace is a wonderful person, and I respect her and her opinions a great deal, but I think you are wrong about this one M'Lady. I personally have never seen so much hard core crafting going on as that that has gone on since reforging was introduced. If anything they've made it more addictive and interesting than it ever has been. And what is so great is, just about every aspect of crafting that I can think of is useful - from the endless crafting of simple base pieces to get exactly what you want, all the way up to imbuing and reforging.

And even basic runic crafting has it's uses, along with the fun of hunting for what you are looking for in one of the revamped dungeons - and no, you don't need to be an "uber" pvm'r and go after only the most difficult mobs in the new dungeons, you can find plenty of useful stuff on even the lowliest of the new critters, if you know what to look for. And as for runic tools being too easy to get, they had to be made easier to get, because reforging takes an awful lot of them, and the best part is, every kind of runic tool, from the lowest to the highest, has it's uses.

I personally don't think crafting has ever been more fun and attractive than it is right now. The big difference now is that crafting doesn't take just training the skill up, then endless rolls of the dice until you get what you want. It actually takes some pretty detailed technical knowledge of the process to get exactly what you are looking for - and then of course, a few rounds of roulette... :)

The biggest issue right now in game isn't crafting, the biggest issue right now is the mass migration that is going on to the Atlantic shard. It's very similar to what has happened in the "real world" with urbanization and the loss of rural communities. I don't know if there is any solution other than beefing up the hardware and systems that support Atlantic, and a few other similar shards, to make sure they are still playable.

Most of the jewelry mods are kind of wasted because of poor combinations, but yes, the RNG will provide a nice, non-curse, powder-dependent splinter weapon or, if you're really lucky, a usable, FCR 3, 20 LRC, 10 LMC, 3 MR ring or the like. But between imbuing and re-forging you probably won't even need the extra jewelry mods because they'll take you over caps. Shrugs. A lot easier to just make a 15 DCI, 3/1 jewel IMO than wait it out for a non-cursed jewel w/ DCI, a pretty rare find.

I should have probably mentioned I was sarcastic about the "exciting new monsters." Mostly re-hued loot bags. The "cave troll" concept was pretty cool, at least, even if they did it better in the hedge maze some years ago (brown ogre? come on...).

What I'd really love to see is people on some of the less-populated shards perhaps selling some of the stuff they craft that isn't quite good enough for their own personal use but that might be very useful indeed to someone who is just starting out on the shard and doesn't have their own crafter. I think a few people doing that on every shard might go a long way in helping returning players and new players stick around for a while longer without feeling the pressure to immediately begin diving into making their own crafters. It seems like any more it's darn difficult to find vendors on about 90% of the shards that actually sell pre-made armor, weapons, and jewelry for less wealthy players. (I think I got spoiled on Siege where people actually do sell suits because they can be a bit easy to lose at times.)

I know for a while people perhaps stopped setting up those types of vendors because they feared someone else would just come along and swoop up the items for unraveling. However, between Shame and Wrong, it's a whole lot easier to get stuff to unravel for essence and relics than it used to be, so maybe it's time to start up some armor, jewelry, and weapon vendors again? (And if you're going to sell LRC armor sets, maybe at least make them from something other than plain leather so the resists aren't so bad?)

the problem is when you do this the stuff sits on vendor for months without sales, even if you grossly underprice them for 499 gold to avoid vendor fees they'll sit there. People are really picky about armor now, they'll only get trash starter suits (like blank lrc ones) or if they're actually going to buy armor it has to be PERFECT and last forever.....it's pretty much been that way since suits with lots of magic mods were super...super easy to get post-ml.

On siege the only real armor vendors we get are simple 70's or LRC suits...and the ones selling them do them pretty much only to keep them available for the shard as they take a lot of time to make and they're barely priceing over mat costs. I've tried stocking other weapons/armor before but they pretty much sat there for over a year only making 3-4 sales (aside from artifacts as those seem easier to "plan" into a suit they actually sell well, but crafted armor, runic pieces, etc, dont)

The reason they sit on vendors for months and months is that the pieces the people have currently are not being consumed. Everyone has a nice set and it NEVER disappears. Armor needs to be broken, destroyed, etc to make it consumable... Either that or skyrocket the insurable price of items by about 500x. It's ******** that you can insure an insanely awesome weapon for 417 gold.

Ah, the insurance and PoF debates (that's really too respectful a term but I can't think of another one at the moment).

AoS has been in the game over 9 years. If AoS stuff, including but not limited to item insurance, was going to kill UO, it would have probably done it by now. PoF has been in the game since at least Publish 21, 9 years as of this coming November, and all that Publish did was rename and expand something that had been in the game before. If PoF was going to kill the game it would have done it by now.

Now to get back to the original topic, a good way to recast the original argument is thus: The over-use of a crafting thing (which btw I've seen no evidence is actually over-used at all) is going to kill crafting (despite the fact that it's, by definition, also crafting).

Seriously?

If "they" would make a way for those who don't have vet transfer shields to move around to other shards to shop (due to a LACK of products and hoarding on low population shards) other than buying xfer tokens for 19$ or however much they are I doubt people would be cramming up Atl and other servers. I'm not going to hold my breath though...

To be fair to the original poster, she did come back and graciously defer to the majority of arguments here. But what's more interesting to me is how she also admitted that her real impetus for posting had nothing to do with crafting at all--an admission that everyone here has overlooked; at least everyone posting. I can't resist the wizened temptation to caution against venting in the heat of the moment on a public forum, where people will naturally mistake such emotional expression for an argument held up by actual reasonable thought. Now we have a bunch of serious-faced debaters arguing AT GREAT LENGTH against someone who never put that much thought into her argument to begin with.

Lace, in a fifteen year-old game, you'll find people leaving (or arriving) for a great multitude of reasons. When you're as invested in a game and community as you appear to be, it can be easy to get too close to the subject to see what anyone else might recognize as a perfectly simple, ordinary, and natural process. Times change. Many people stick around, but most people move on. I equally respect both camps, because depending on the person, it can take a great degree of courage to do either. I've seen this happen in other communities, both online and offline. Heck, there's still a thriving multiplayer community for Master of Orion II (released in 1996), but believe me, it's a community where most everyone knows your name. At some point, or more truthfully slowly over time, everyone in that community realized there was nothing to blame but time itself. But, whatever. People who enjoy the game are still playing it with each other.

What is more harmful than time? Self-fulfilled prophecies and self-perpetuated myth-mongering, rabble-rousing and rumors. Days from now, you might not think about a forum post made in haste and frustration, and though I'll acknowledge your good intentions, I'll ask you to acknowledge that you casually threw the developers of the reforging system under the bus in order to voice a very whimsical point. It's very likely, judging from the above replies, that reforging has brought a wealth of additional value to the crafting professions. But consider this. Posts like yours can appear as statements of fact to returning veterans. We should be careful not to undo ourselves what we seek to blame others for undoing.

Several years ago, people were up in arms, complaining about overpopulation, referring to Britannia's wildernesses as "urban sprawl". The forest around my house now looks more like a fantasy setting, and I'm not complaining about it. Since returning to UO I've made dozens of friends, joined a pretty active guild, and introduced myself to many of the new systems and features. There's still a game here, but it's not what it used to be. That's not UO's fault. It's life. UO's truest fans will continue to enjoy their old pastime, but the community will continue to shrink over time. Have your opinions, voice your suggestions and complaints, but pick your battles wisely, and please remember to be kind and civil to the people who keep UO's old gears polished...and turning.

P.S. I should add that the Ultima universe's first great community of players, the Ultima Dragons, were having to accept these simple truths at the time when UO was first released. At that time, they had already been playing Ultima games for fifteen years.

...And they are still around, playing Ultima games, and making games inspired by Ultima. ;)

Lace is top notch. She doesn't post things in a "whimsical" way. For her, and others she knows, the reforging killed crafting. She's enough of a Lady, and has enough class, to post gracefully instead of argumentatively when the "majority" seems to disagree. She's played long enough to know and your condescending post doesn't serve to prove anything.

I remember when armor was a bonus. My first set of real GM made shadow plate purchased with gold gotten from looting skeletons in Brit graveyard. I thought I was the **** in that suit. Back then not everyone had their own GM crafters.
The game progressed. Now to a point where you need a spread sheet to figure out your armor. Lace has adapted over time, but now with reforging what else can she do? The fun of making people suits, creating a business, has been taken away. People now know what they need and the great majority are making the specific items themselves. Now people are just getting runic kits and hammering out bags of items for themselves.

For you to go on about "self-perpetuated myth-mongering, rabble-rousing and rumors" to this particular poster is out of line. Posts like hers "appearing as fact to returning veterans"? Well it is a fact, to her. It's killed UO, for her(and others with interests like hers). Just because you or others may disagree with her feelings, doesn't make them any less true, for her. Even after she gracefully acknowledged that she would give it another chance and adapt her playstyle you still felt the need to speak down to her as an "emotional" woman who's feelings couldn't possibly be validated. Good for you if you had some sort of strange desire to try to make a nice lady feel bad.

I suggest if you want to talk down to someone, or flame them for how they feel about what is happening to the game, you pick another target. This woman has more class in her little finger than most anyone I have ever met in UO.

Better yet, just do what I do.

I often see folks wearing "old" armor and even though I've only been back a few months I've farmed enough resources that I can ask those players if they're either new to the game or a returning player. Then we discuss their char and usually within 30 minutes I make them some armor and jewelry and usually make a suggestion or 2 on how to update their char to take advantage of newer skills.

Done this 3 times in the last 2 weeks alone.

P.S. This is also a reason why I don't think everyone is quiting or that the game is dying, simply due to the number of new or returning people I've seen lately.

I'm good, I can't get my mom however to play anymore games with me lol. She got me hooked on UO back in 2000 and as much as I still enjoy playing UO, it just doesn't feel the same as it used to. Everyone in our family played except my older sister and now it's just me playing. My mom still has the shop called "Serendipity" at the tram yew moongate on Atlantic Shard. I do miss the old days though of when she lived in fel and was just terrible at pvp lol, and I miss the huge fights that I would watch go on at the brit crossroads on catskills. Right now she forgets what month it, more recently though she couldn't remember when Mothers Day was. I'm just dreading the day that she forgets who her own son is.

She told me that she felt like it was a death sentence when they told her that she was diagnosed with early onset alzheimers disease. I'm going to try and start bringing my daughter around her more often because I want her to have some memories with her. I'm only 25 years old and our family has a history of not living to very old age. My grandmother died at 55 years old and aunt died at age 40. I know I shouldn't think like this but I feel like she only has 10 years left, but ofcourse I don't say anything like that to her. The bottom line though is I don't know what i'm going to do when the day comes that I can't call my mom up on the phone, send her an ICQ message, or an email from where I work just to see how she's doing. I mean that's the woman that raised me and made sure that I was taken care of. How does a person prepare to let them go at such an early age?

I was reading about the disease and it looked like 14% of the people diagnosed live for 20 years. If she were to live that long that would only put her at 62 years old. It makes me scared for my daughter and for me and my sisters. I know my moms grandfather had it but my moms parents didn't, and if it does skip a generation like that then my daughter will sadly get it.

I was reading about this drug "Enbrel" aka Etanercept that people are prescribed whent hey have some kind of schlerosis. There was a study done back in 2008 on 15 alzheimer patients who upon taking the shot showed signs of improvement within minutes. The patients were able to answer questions like what year it was and what there birthdate was. What's weird though is I couldn't find any recent information as to whether or not they are going to perform more research on etanercept with alzheimer disease patients. I just hope that if not a cure then something is produced down the road that atleast stops this in its tracks. As hard as it is for me to write this because i'm at work and I can't have tears coming down my face if a customer walks in lol, I think it really makes you think of the things you've taken for granted all these years when something like this happens. She was however very happy to hear that you replied here on the forums and still remembered who she was.

I find reforging to be an amazing balance to the factions fixes (as well as for archery to throwing), and it sits quite nicely with those who take crafting seriously. It's a whole new aspect of the game, with lots of newly opened doors. Sure, it's a new RNG lottery that can be frustrating, but it's also a way to make up for that DCI/HCI on a suit that can be hard to attain. It also cuts the fat outta the some of the grind in shame. I'm not saying you'll make an item absolutely more powerful than anything you can get from the new loot table, but you'll more consistently yield desirable pieces in a time-effecient manner that have a 500 max weight of a gm crafted piece instead of a 450 piece. Spend your Shame time farming jewels and tinkered pieces if you want, reforging will let you cover the other pieces you need.

Edited to point out low end runics are now viable again because of reforging and the ability to point out a direction for which you want your mods to fall is very, very nice.

She's played long enough to know and your condescending post doesn't serve to prove anything.
I've played long enough to know better than to argue with anyone bearing the title "Legendary Board Warrior". Lace deserves a lot of credit for her gracious response. She's also fortunate to have a friend like you, who'll come to her defense upon the occasion of a perceived slight. That's admirable and respectable.

For you to go on about "self-perpetuated myth-mongering, rabble-rousing and rumors" to this particular poster is out of line.
But this is where you and I will always disagree, or would, if things were different, and if I was the sort of person who enjoyed arguing ad nauseam with people on Internet forums. I've also played long enough to know when hyperbole and dev bashing are hiding in plain sight. I don't regret calling Lace out on this at all. Scroll up and read her OP and its title. Now ask yourself, honestly and without bias, why I might have been compelled to stick my neck out and say something. For that matter, scroll down the entire front page of threads on UHall. If I were a potential new player and saw this mess, I would skip right on by. Hyperbole, bashing and slander, whether toward a dev, producer or publisher isn't productive, isn't mature, isn't classy, and it isn't how you get your suggestions taken seriously. Granted, our Stratics mods deserve much blame for this, for allowing this behavior to fester contagiously. But I've made plenty of kind, considerate suggestions for UO without contributing to the PR disaster that this community represents while it continually seeks to undermine itself.

If you don't like something, tell the community what you don't like and why, and offer some suggestions on how and what to improve. I've found it helpful to pretend I've just been hired as a dev, given the task of improving my self-same problems with the game. How would I work with the team to improve it? How might I go about doing that while also satisfying the many customers who approve of whatever changes I disapprove of? What challenges are they dealing with that I'm currently unaware of? I guarantee you, you'll receive PMs from devs for your well-written suggestions, and maybe even an invitation for further feedback. Don't be a jerk. Don't be manipulative. Don't enter the discussion right off the bat with a threat to quit over it. Be constructive.

You start your condescension with
I've played long enough to know better than to argue with anyone bearing the title "Legendary Board Warrior".
Then proceed to attempt to do just that.
All I see here is someone who was frustrated with the loss of her playstyle, the loss of friends, and the general direction the game is going. You took it upon yourself to be some sort of judge and jury to this Lady, berating her for posting how she feels.
I am simply telling you that of all the posts, and all the people to exercise your self importance and ego upon, this Lady is not worthy. Do not take it upon yourself to criticize others without knowing what kind of person they are. You accomplish nothing by doing so. Unless, like I said, your goal was to try to make a nice Lady feel bad. Go pick a fight with someone your own size. Your posts here in this thread are no better than anyone else who berates the game, the dev team, or any other aspect of Ultima.

And by the way, your signature links go nowhere.

Good grief Flutter, take a chill pill.

Nothing he said was that bad and much like your overprotected friend, he's entitled to his opinion as well.

Finally anyone who starts any thread that includes the words "killed UO" deserves a little berating, since last I checked UO is still alive.

Nah. UO died when Richard Garriott quit. Then it died a few more times when other devs who revived it left. Now it's just a zombie of it's former self.
Besides the point, you shouldn't attack someone for posting how they feel. You can disagree with someone without trying to make them feel like ****.

Is that a fact? Sounds more like an opinion.

Remember that next time you're in one of the numerous threads about the lose of the Arti ATM machine.
