I am told this is quite an old glitch. So you may have heard of it. However, I hadn't heard of it before, and I've been playing for seven years, so it's worth a heads-up. It's not a bug report because I think it's an unavoidable thing - just a public service announcement.
If you're out training with pets and the "Fifteen minutes to server-down" message comes up, don't wait for the second message to get them somewhere safe.
I was training my vollems (the bonded sort) in Britain, and I got to talking with an old UO player and missed the first server-down message. Then "The servers are going down shortly" message popped up, and I teleported to an inn with them and logged out.
Baja serverdown is 10pm my time and I had to be up at 6am the next morning, so I didn't log back in to check that everything was fine.
When I got back this evening, my character had been logged in all day (I logged in with another character on the same account and my first guy's name was still up on the guild register, despite that being technically impossible) and the vollems had gone wild.
Luckily, that same old UO player actually hunted the things down and tamed them* (I thought they'd disappear if they went wild like they do when released, as they're an auto-bond pet like an imprisoned dog, but they don't; they just go wild and can be tamed by anybody), so I still have them - I'm waiting for them to re-bond now - but he actually lost a white wyrm to the same glitch at the same time.
So be careful. Always get your pets somewhere safe before server down, or log straight back on immediately after to make sure they're okay.
*This is why Baja is an amazing shard incidentally
