Does anyone remember the original chat system for UO? If I remember it correctly there were no public channels, only private ones (which could be used as public channels if the creator so desired). The private channels were moderated by whoever made the channel, and they could also assign moderators. Am I remembering this correctly? If not someone feel free to correct me. However, the point I'm trying to ask is, was the original chat system we had for UO with player moderators better than what we have now, with no immediate moderation and a reporting system? Thoughts?

I like the old system in that it wasn't RIGHT THERE ALL THE TIME NO ESCAPE EXCEPT LEAVING THE CHANNEL.

I like the new system in that I can tell anyone off instantly, because I can always see their retardation immediately.

Here's what could fix the new system:

1. What's said in Fel, stays in Fel. Explanation: Fel would have its own separate general chat channel. It can be listened to, but not posted on, from the other facets. Similarly, the main chat channel can be listened to, but not posted on, from Fel. SP would just have the one general chat channel (or be set up to where the two channels are set up for reds and blues)

2. Have a filter/flag system and log for non-Fel General chat channel. This would send a flag up in the log if inappropriate language used, that GMs could check the log to see the context. Only this one channel, plus any set up by EMs for events, would be filtered/logged in this manner.

3. Persons abusing the non-Fel General Chat channel for PvP drama would get their account's speaking ability on all chat channels squelched for various times depending on the infraction type and previous offenses. However, non-PvP-related violations (Standard harrassment, etc) would fall under game TOS violations, especially if the target pages.

4. If someone actually wants an all-facet PVP drama channel, by all means they can create one, and then it would be up to THEM to get people to use it.

I never really used the old system, but atleast it looked user friendly. Opened a window - was a place to type and read.

This new one? No clue - I see very little blue chat in CC, I have no idea how to use it in the CC - I have no need to use it at all.

I found the old system horrible, pointless. Used rarely, if ever. Awkward and pointless when it was used, detracted from rather than added to the experience of the game.

Like many things in the past of this game, the old chat system is something that can only be remembered in fondness once it's already passed. While it was around it was a pointless **** that few liked and fewer used.

I honestly wonder if there is anything in this game, however, disliked or ignored it was in its day, that won't be remembered in fondness by us once it's gone.

Press the comma to talk in it.

To change channel or get out of it entirely, click "chat" on the bar at the top of the screen, the one you can expand and collapse.

I liked the old system except for a new player. I wish there truely was new people coming to play, but when they log into the "help" channel, it would be nice to have people there. Real live counselors again would be really neat. No need in worrying about such things with no intentions of putting a box on the shelf again im afraid.

I like the new system. You don't have to join a chat room if you do not wish.

You know, if I could go back and redo this thread and poll it would be more to the tune of "do you think the chats should be moderated by players" rather than what it is. Maybe that wouldn't make a difference though, but it would have avoided incurring responses like Galen's who think it's just only about going back to something old for the the sake of going back to something old. It's really more about how poorly the current chat system is moderated. Ignore is an option, but some things that are said in the chats really have no place in the chats at any time.

On a side note, it's not only Fel PvP'ers who flood the chat and harass people. For example, Catskills has two infamous Luna banksitters who harass people on general chat every night. Just saying.

I would hate to see players moderating other players, and I say that as someone who doesn't use general to curse or deride others. It is moderated poorly, but it shouldn't be actual players who get to decide what is right or wrong... as much as I hate the smack talk and juvenile behavior from some.

Yeah got to hate people who answer the questions that are actually asked.

I tend to agree with you on this. And really there isn't much anyone can say on the internet that disturbs me anymore. But I know there are still some people that play that it does bother and I was just curious how people on here felt about it.

I didn't really mind the response, it was my fault for not doing the poll and thread in a way that better communicated what I was trying to ask. Guess that's what happens when you stay up too late posting.

get rid of chat ....get rid of griefers and smack talk
Well besides the fact that it won't get rid of griefers or smack talk, chat can be used legitimately - most other decent MMOs have no problems with it and it can be incredibly useful.

The key is to be willing to crack down on those using it. Now that it's been published that certain things are officially no-no in GC, maybe we'll see something.

ICQ has gone through several iterations ...
so, "original" = no ... current iterations are "better" ... :danceb:

And "mail" never really got the ponies running ...
"Chat" at the banking/loitering areas (open market chatter)
Is still like it ever was ...
Just fewer people

A LOT fewer people.

*shrugs*
just a reflection of the mall rat generation ...

I tend to agree with you on this. And really there isn't much anyone can say on the internet that disturbs me anymore.
