The key element here is that both are instigated by using the honor virtue and targeting the opponent.

In a small way they are connected. As a bushido you can honor and do more damage and gain perfection and at the same time level up in the honor virtue, but as a non-bushido, you can only level up in the honor virtue and can NOT do more damage and gain perfection. The use of honor for fighting is completely different than embracing your honor so that monsters will not attack you. A bushido can use it for either purpose, but a non-bushido can use it ONLY to embrace so they can walk through monsters unmolested. The main use for non-bushidos is for taming pets, getting through massively annoying areas such as the lower level of The Citadel or through the sands of Twisted Weald...

Anyhow, try out this great website and just click around and do some reading, it mainly has to do with newer changes and has tons of info on very cool stuff. The link is to the directory list which will give you a lot of information and the search works great so you can type in whatever you're wondering about and usually get a lot of help. It is player run and edited so as you learn, maybe you can add to it. http://www.uoguide.com/UOGuide:Directory

OMG a UO wiki?!? I was under the impression only the shadowbane community had a really useful wiki. Player run databases often provide the information needed to ask the right questions, rather than just stumbling in the dark as I seem to be doing since my return to uo.

You may wish to look at this page on the virtues which I have put together for possible submission to stratics if I don't end up putting it on spellweave:

The Value of the Virtues

It is more on the benefits of the virtues in a 'play' sense than about the virtue's themselves, although each one is linking to the relevant stratics page by clicking on the virtue icon.

ah. I've never heard of these items at all. I understand power and vanq weps dmg inc. Unseen damage to event creatures? sounds pretty silly. how does one distinguish these weapons from others then?
They have it written in their title. I have a "Power Dagger", for instance, with HLA 20%, DI 30%, UBWS, 100% Physical. Got mine off one of the invading horde that emptied out Britain... permanently on Legends... a couple of years ago.

Well i did say I play on and off. Most IDOCs don't contain new junk. I have a hard time believing these items are 2 years old but if they are, I've never once seen one. I just came back from a year hiatus which may explain alot.

You seem to be offended by my lack of knowledge about weird new items. You probably must have missed one of my many rants about the fact that there is little to no consolidated information on UO anymore. Almost everything is entirely out of date. the forums search only help if you know what you're searching for and anything that has been introduced to UO since Samurai empire is new content in my book.
Boy, do I share your pain! I've been playing UO more on that off from just after it launched... way before there was a Tram... and yet I'm mostly clueless. Got fed up with the PvP only format and quit a couple of weeks before they unveiled Tram. Keeping the Tram secret from us made me so mad I didn't get over it and go back to UO until the launch of AoS. :D

Been pretty faithful ever since AoS, but *still* seem to miss just about every event they throw. Just missed almost a year with moving, etc. Thing is, I never seem to catch up! I sit around the bank eavsdropping, or read here on Statics and just sit disgusted at how I have no clue what everybody seems to be talking about.

Just call me the Evergreen, Always-A-Noob Vet. At least I can brag that it's ALL still fun for me, even after almost 10 years. :danceb:

Fought my first one today, and it was one of the most annoying fights of my UO life. It constatly healded it self, so my cu just kept hitting it...and hitting it...and hitting it... and I was just getting borred. Finally when it gets down to redlined it takes off, into a hoard of monsters, and keeps healing its self, rapidly getting back to 1/4 life, and I said: "whatever, not worth the effort."

Not enjoyable for me anyway.

well, I honor thee! Man, this game would be in a much better state if more relaxed peeps would inhabit it, compared to to the "the better, the faster" community. Let's team up to the "Noob patrol" guild, known for legendary dying...

It's a deal! :grouphug: returned!

When I first started playing UO, the vistas Sosaria opened before us were unique in all the gaming world. Though I knew I should've been raising my skills, I found myself wandering the landscape, just taking it all in.

Back at the first, the AI was more actively aligned, and carried on doing what it was aligned to do whether anyone was around or not. With no prompting, sheep, dogs, cats, horses, deer, etc. often fought rats, lizzies, ratmen and their like, because they were made to hate each other. :) The different races fought each other as well as us players. All those AI goings-on were extremely interesting to me (to the point of awe-inspiring at times), since I had been a programmer and could appreciate the genius that created it all. In my humble opinion, even to this day, the real-world type feel magically woven into UO has never been matched, for all the fancy graphics of other offerings.

So, why rush through a world that was created in such minute detail just for us to discover and claim as our own? You can't notice the wonder when you're running. :) The monsters will still be there later, but you might not stumble across that particularly great spot ever again.

Somehow, I don't think I have the "normal" UO-player attitude. <grin> :dunce: But there are worse things than getting what you consider to be the most out of something you're paying for.

:cheerleader:
So... where does this eternal Noob sign up?

Personally, and I am fighting them pretty solidly for like 5 hrs a day every day:-

I use a True Paladin.

I have tried a myriad of different approaches, and many different weapons.

IMHO- The best by a VERY long way is the Overseers Saundered Blade.

Very, very fast, Nice buffs, and Whirlwind Special is invaluable for the spawn/summons.

With enemy of One, Consecrate, Divine, I am able to hit him for 60 every second, solid, Blam, bish, bosh.

When he gets to 1/2 health he summons, retreat, wait 90 seconds, forward, kill few remaining summons, attack Vanguard.

(90% dead, teleport, summon, repeat, retreat, advance, Kill.)

Soloable in 5 minutes, Sword/Shield every time, couple of K gold, and cos Im physically whacking the beggars, hey its fun too, who wants a silly ol big Dragon when you can stand and duke it out with the swines.

It is WAAAAY easier if you have 2 x healing, and also obviously a load easier if there are 2 dragons hitting it as well, goes down in like 20 secs. But for pure fun, Cove, Fell (With Creature Blocking) sure is heartstopping :)

You have to stand behind your dog like one tile from the vanguard and vet your pet while throwing mind blasts or harms as fast as you can and as much as you can with your mana. It will aid the dog and keep the vanguard's heals from meaning much. You need a good mana pool, lmc, and mr to really pummel him enough to take him down easily, but that is how I do it and I can solo them with my super dragon. The summoning and telleporting out is annoying though.

I too am a returning vet, started playing when the lost lands T2A was introduced. I have been away for about 1.5 years. I left becuase of all the scripters, the inflated prices, item based play style that UO turned into, and the fact that they were forcing us solo players to have to join up to get any good loot. I went to WOW and decided to come back and see what has changed. I sold my good accounts but still have a descent account that I re-activated yesterday. I haven't seen many changes at all, and have been trying for two days to get the UOKR client with out success. I think I have spent most of my time reading up on what has changed.

You mean a 100% Fire weapon does good damage on them?! Are they Undead? (My mage's Exp/FS combo didn't seem to do much, but I think mages have been nerfed out of the fighting for this invasion.)

My favorite Paladin-in-training has been using a Blade of Insanity or a Lord Blackthorn's Kriss, both seem to be decent for the spawn, but take forever on the VCs... and I can't solo a VC at that, need at least one other tank.

The Fire based seems to work nicely yes, but tbh I think its a pure speed thing, with the buffs its hitting just about as fast as any weap can..?added to whirlwind for the massed summons (does about 45-50 on every monster near - A terribly overlooked weapon the Radiant scimitar).

Ive been also using my Blade of righteous, which is Demon Slayer, which obv helps against the summoned Demons, but also the life leech is invaluable.

But, again, The OverSeers is totally on its own, speed, other buffs, and Whirlwind special....

So I guess, a Radiant with 30 ssi, over 80 LL, with a bit of Hit'Spell' over 80 fire, a bit of stam ress is the perfect weapon.

IMHO..;)

What Slayers work on them?

What is their weakest resist?

What dexers are people using that supposedly work well against these?

Why are rune beetles so ineffective on these(any nerfs I don't know about?)?
Here's some Vanguard Info.... They are broken. They spawn in inaccessible areas and ruin the event. Yeah, the main attractions are ruining the event. Yeah, LOL. I would LOL too if that was not an actual fact.

SSI all you want. Throw in some MR and DCI HCI and SR but you can't fight them. They are inaccessible. Yep, LOL. LOL at it ALL. No emergency patch on that minor detail of a ruined event... let's just wait until the next event is ready and put the fix out then.

Also Greater Dragon work. Not great, but easier than anything else I have seen posted. One guy told me he had success with pack animals... specifically ostards. Hard to believe, but may be worth a shot.

Have read some others are having good luck with Soul Seekers, and that used to be my weapon of choice before I fell in love with the Blade of Insanity and Blackthorn's Kriss, both very fast weapons if you have a Dex of at least 80.

Blackthorn's Kriss is an Arachnid Slayer, though, which is opposed by the Reptilian group, but haven't noticed any Reptiles in the spawn yet. With LL 22%, SSI 25% (with a natural weapon speed of 2s), and DI 50%, plus UBWS (for my Swords), I find I'm hitting hard at least once a second, which keeps the baddies from regaining much of their hits. (I've noticed not just VCs but the spawn too seem to heal really fast!)

Statics warns concerning Slayer Weapons:
All the Slayer Weapons fell into 6 groups. Each group had an opposing group. Weapons of a particular type were only found on their opposing group. For instance Balrons and Daemons would give Slayer Weapons that did extra damage to Elementals.

When used against their opposing group, it would result in the monster doing double damage to the person wielding the weapon. For example, carry silver, and Repond creatures did double damage to you. Carry Repond weapons and undead creatures did double damage to you. Pick your opponent with care!
Right now I've been wielding the Blade of Insanity, and it seems to work better than Blackthorn's Kriss without giving up much speed. With a HSL of 100% it really seems to slow them down, add to that an SSI of 30%, a DI of 50% (with SR of 2 as an added bonus), and a natural weapon speed of 2.5s, and I've got one really fast, rather nasty Vanguard chopper. <grin>

I think I've got some nice Fire weapons around too, though (since I noticed how they mow through Undead), so I think I'll try one of those as well. Read someone was using a 100% Cold weapon that worked well, which puzzled me, since I thought Undead were almost immune to Cold as well as Poison... but maybe not.

Being taken over by the Shadowlords, as all the Vanguard are, and imbued with some sort of special "Shadowlord" buffing (as indicated by how much harder even lowly Vanguard members are to kill, as well as the black cloud that leaves the body of any Vanguard baddie when it dies), I was wondering if all the Vanguard might be considered Undead of a sort?

Or maybe I'm extrapolating too much. <sigh> I get so confused trying to figure out the backstory. I was one of those geek-types who dove head-first into the Inu thing... I just LOVE backstory!
