Resolute

Andy Cortez is working on the visuals for the new scene, Resolute, for Release 26, launching January 28th. Resolute is the next destination for the new avatar following the Path of Courage. Holding an amulet of testimony from a dying Knight of Norgard, the player finds a fortified town held by his companions in arms and begins to learn about what threatens that noble order, both from within and without. Here are few work-in-progress images from Andy:

North Varisalla Foothills

These foothills were once rich in copper and other ores, but a massive Satyr-run mining operation in the area effectively stripped the land bare over several decades. The miners, primarily Faun slaves, were forced to work daily shifts of 12 hours or more, even after it became apparent that the ore in the area had been over mined. Even after productivity had hit bottom, the Satyrs refused to abandon the mines in the belief that a “motherlode” was still to be found. Over the decades, the entire area became honeycombed with an interconnected network of tunnels. Several years ago, a poorly reinforced mine shaft was constructed very close to an underground lake. The shaft’s wall was breached and the lake water quickly filled it and all connected tunnels. Hundreds of miners and their overseers were killed. The mining operation was finished, but rumors still inspired Kobolds and other scavengers to search the area for the never-found motherlode.

The Making of The City of Aerie – Part 2

[From a Dev+ Forum Post by Esteben “SorcerousSteve” Zaldivar]

Hey guys, once again its SorcerousSteve and I am here to give you an update on the latest version of Aerie!

Last time we covered Castle Aerie and the Northern City Entrance, today we will be discovering other sectors of the city.

The Eastern City Entrance to Aerie, featuring Castle Aerie in the background alongside the many windmills that help power the homes of Aerie, directing your attention to the upper left you can catch a glimpse of the galleons docked at the Port.

The Port of Aerie, a hub for commerce and trade, the largest port this side of the Blackblade Mountains.

The Southern City Entrance, site of another town square surrounded by farms and pastures.

Swamps surrounding Aerie’s outer wall.

The Warehouse District/Slums of Aerie, home to some of the hardworking peasant class some of which can barely afford to put a roof over their heads. The other side of the spectrum compared to Aerie’s most northern and affluent district on the shadows of Castle Aerie.

Layout of Central and Southern Aerie.

Sunset falling on Castle Aerie.

One last shot of Aerie Castle overlooking the ocean.

Interested in NPC Submissions for Aerie? Check out Scott “Lum” Jennings request for NPC submissions post.

Well that’s a wrap, hope you guys are looking forward to setting up home in Aerie and I wish you all a Happy New Year!

NPC Submissions Requested for Aerie and Resolute!

Aerie NPC Submissions

[From a Dev+ Forum Post by Scott “Lum” Jennings]

Thank you for your continuing support of Shroud of the Avatar! This month, we’re seeking entries for inhabitants of the city of Aerie!

Aerie is the City of Truth, and a key stop for players seeking the secret of bonesteel discovered in Blood River. The largest city in the Verdantis plain, and for a long time the hub of commerce and daily life in the region, the people there are most recently concerned of the elven settlers north of the city – some counsel coexistence, some warn of war. In the face of prejudice and fear, truth can take more than one shade…

Esteben “SorcerousSteve” Zaldivar has already posted a preview of his great work on Aerie here: https://www.shroudoftheavatar.com/forum/index.php?threads/the-making-of-city-of-aerie.41899/

First, some brief notes:

– NPC visual customization, as you may have noticed, is still at a very early stage in development. Right now for the backers who want to be added to Aerie, we cannot offer any visual customization options beyond our standard gallery of NPC models. If you would like to have input over the visual customization of your NPC, please wait for further releases when we can offer this.

– Response to this will be on a first-come first-served basis for each call for responses. Aerie is one of the largest cities we are introducing to date (somewhat larger than Owl’s Head, and a bit smaller than Ardoris). So, we have quite a few NPCs to populate for this lively city! If, for whatever reason, your NPC doesn’t appear in Aerie, feel free to respond again. We have quite a few towns and cities to populate!

– We are allowing people who have already submitted NPCs to submit their ideas for Aerie as well if they like, but people who have not yet submitted an NPC will take priority over those who have.

– When responding, please list a first and second choice for profession.

– NPCs for Aerie must be human. No elves, please.

Still with us? Great! Here’s what we need this month:

29 guards
13 – 19 travellers and residents (people you would find on the streets of a busy city)
7 – 9 farmers
4 – 6 shoppers
2 travelling merchants
1 innkeeper
1 tavernkeepers
1 barmaids/barmen
3 – 5 pub patrons
7 – 10 dock workers
4 – 5 ship crew
1 – 3 fishermen
16 merchants (all varieties)

If you’d like to have your namesake be a resident or visitor of Aerie, please respond via private message on this forum to me (Lum) using the following format:

NPC name:
NPC gender:
NPC profession (first choice):
NPC profession (second choice):
NPC background (optional): A paragraph on whom your NPC is, how they would respond to nosy outlanders poking about their business, what brings them to Aerie (or keeps them there), or anything else you’d like to add. We reserve the right to edit and/or reject any background that does not fit the lore and setting of the game.

Please specify in your submission that this NPC is for Aerie.

We will respond if: your NPC is used; if it is rejected for whatever reason (such as an inappropriate name); if a supplied background is inappropriate, or if your NPC missed the cutoff for this release.

Thanks for your support, and see you in Aerie!

Resolute NPC Submissions

[From a Dev+ Forum Post by Scott “Lum” Jennings]

Thank you for your continuing support of Shroud of the Avatar! This month, we’re seeking entries for inhabitants of the fortress of Resolute!

Resolute is the next destination for the new avatar following the Path of Courage. Holding an amulet of testimony from a dying Knight of Norgard, the player finds a keep held by the Knights and begins to learn about what threatens that noble order, both from within and without…

First, some brief notes:

– NPC visual customization, as you may have noticed, is still at a very early stage in development. Right now for the backers who want to be added to Resolute, we cannot offer any visual customization options beyond our standard gallery of NPC models. If you would like to have input over the visual customization of your NPC, please wait for further releases when we can offer this.

– Response to this will be on a first-come first-served basis for each call for responses. Resolute is a fairly medium-sized town, but it has comparatively few NPCs (most of which are Knights of Norgard). If your NPC doesn’t appear in Resolute, feel free to respond again, or to the post following this one. We have quite a few towns and cities to populate!

– We are allowing people who have already submitted NPCs to submit their ideas for Resolute as well if they like, but people who have not yet submitted an NPC will take priority over those who have.

– When responding, please list a first and second choice for profession.

– NPCs for Resolute must be human. No kobolds, please.

– If an NPC is designated as a guard, they are considered to be a Knight of Norgard. This means that their background is going to be fairly set in stone. Feel free to submit *general* guidelines if you like for their background but be aware if they conflict with the story of Norgard – which, of course, you aren’t familiar with yet as we are just beinning to tell it – it won’t be able to be used.

Still with us? Great! Here’s what we need this month:

11 – 21 guards/Knights of Norgard
1 – 2 residents (not Knights but live within the keep)
1 – 2 travellers
3 merchants (armor / realtor / deco)

If you’d like to have your namesake be a resident or visitor of Resolute, please respond via private message on this forum to me (Lum) using the following format:

NPC name:
NPC gender:
NPC profession (first choice):
NPC profession (second choice):
NPC background (optional): A paragraph on whom your NPC is, how they would respond to nosy outlanders poking about their business, what brings them to Resolute (or keeps them there), or anything else you’d like to add. We reserve the right to edit and/or reject any background that does not fit the lore and setting of the game.

Please specify in your submission that this NPC is for Resolute.

We will respond if: your NPC is used; if it is rejected for whatever reason (such as an inappropriate name); if a supplied background is inappropriate, or if your NPC missed the cutoff for this release.

Thanks for your support, and see you in Resolute!

– Lum

Dev+ Asset Packs Galore in December!

Chris Spears and Michael “Hutch” Hutchison really stepped it up for our Dev+ backers in December and released four Dev+ Asset Packs! Including:

Clockwork Pets

Chris posted the Clockwork Pets Asset Pack in the Dev+ forums on December 16, which includes the Brass and Silver versions of the Dog, Cat, and Raven:

Automaton

Chris also posted the Automaton Asset Pack on December 16, with the comment “Everyone say, “Thanks Bubonic!” Bubonic requested the Automaton model. Please use these only for good or we’ll have to get Will Smith down here to clean up…

Chess and Checkers Pack

Hutch posted the human-sized Chess and Checkers Asset Pack on December 17. The checkers set will be available in the Add-On Store soon for inclusion in Release 26 on January 28th.

Wind and Geothermal Power

Hutch posted the Wind and Geothermal Power Asset Pack Asset Pack on December 18 with these comments:

Here are the wind power generators that you have come to know from places like Owl’s Head, along with a few geothermal power generation items. Geothermal power will be featured in the upcoming city of Resolute!

The pack contains:

– 1 spiral windmill, suitable for rooftops (mount can be rotated to accommodate different angles)
– 1 fan windmill
– 2 “transformer” boxes
– Snap-able, modular pipe kit with over a dozen pieces
– Fumarole/vent fan turbine
– Geothermal vent cap for use with pipe kit
– 2 chimney style fumaroles
– 2 pool fumaroles

I had to remove a few textures from the transformer boxes; otherwise, everything is pretty much as you see in-game. Here’s a preview:

Unity Asset Packs containing original Shroud of the Avatar assets were included as a reward in the now expired Developer Pledge tier. However that reward, as well as access to the Dev+ Forums, will continue to be honored at the Citizen Pledge tier and above.

Here are links to all the currently available SotA Dev+ Unity Asset Packs:

Brass Clockwork Raven

This Brass Clockwork Raven is a non-combat pet that can follow you wherever you go. Available now in the Add-On Store!

White Stone Castle Wall

Ever want to build a castle wall around your property? Well now you can with this White Stone Castle Wall set, available now in the Add-On Store. This set will completely enclose a Town Lot, and includes the following segments:

  • 5 ea straight walls
  • 4 ea corner walls
  • 2 ea corner tower walls
  • 2 ea straight tower walls
  • 1 ea short gated wall
  • 1 ea long gated wall

Some wall segments can be placed on a Village lot, but you will need a Town Property (or larger), or a Player Owned Town, to construct a completely enclosed wall perimeter. The minimum segments needed to completely enclose various lots are:

  • Town: 1 ea short gate, 4 ea corners, 5 ea straights
  • City: 1 ea long gate, 4 ea corners, 10 ea straights
  • Keep: 1 ea long gate, 4 ea corners, 18 ea straights
  • Castle: 1 ea long gate, 4 ea corners, 30 ea straights

Release 24-25 Christmas Decoration Contest Winners!

Congratulations to the winners of Doctor Shroud’s Release 24-25 Christmas Decoration Contest! Here’s an excerpt from Doctor Shroud’s Events Forum post:

3RD place : SeleneNoctua

Selene once again shows off her creative side. With books and cheese by her side, she has created beautiful art work cleverly placed to show off in her Snowy biome. She didn’t let the small lot stop her creating such a harmonious farm to hang out in. But where’s Santa? He left his reindeer behind.

2ND place: Gaelis Trajan

As always, Lady Trajan stops at nothing when it comes to beautiful decorations. Incredible detail brought this party market to life and the notes are hilarious. But she doesn’t stop there, her basement workshop was laid out splendidly, especially with the limited space there is down there. Shame about the reindeer.

1ST place: Amaasing

Amaasing is the right word to use for Nikolaj Abildgaard’s creation. It gave me plenty of brain freezes because of how creative and original his decoration is. He really went the extra mile to get everyone involved with the use of a mini quest. A number of papers were scattered around the area, each holding a question. Very well thought out and nothing seemed random. Go check out his place if you wanted your general Christmas knowledge tested.
