UO2, UX0 - UONeXt?

I am getting back into the boards and have seen speculation and conspiracy theories that some of the devs may not have been laid off but reassigned within EAMythic to work on other projects. If that were true and someone like I dont know Draconi was given a chance to work on a real UO Sequel ... what do you think would have the best chance of making it to store shelves and not get cancelled like the last few attempts. Why can't EAMythic use a game engine from one of their other games (WAR, DAoC, etc).

Please tell me I am not the only one that would not love to walk into GameStop and see both UO (latest expansion at the time) and UO2 side by side for sale. I thought we were close with UXO but then they pulled the plug. I don't think the point should be to out-wow WoW it should be to take the things that make UO unique (community, roleplaying, sandbox, customization, LORE, history/characters) and bring them into the next generation of online MMORPGs.

I love UO. I have survived the 3D Client, KR Client etc and now today I am going to be trying out the EC client for the first time to see how it compares to UO 2D ("Classic Client" lol). This is not another 2D vs 3D thread this is just a question why they dont make better use of their in house technology and programmers to build a new game to help keep the UO spirt alive well into the future. For once, I would like to see EA make a real try at a new UO and not cancel IT! Who knows - maybe someday we could be playing UO with our friends on XBOX360 OR PS3?

An xbox/ps3 client would be nice but I don't see anything wrong with the current version of UO. If anything have Mystic revamp the crafting part of UO with the magic they have already demonstrated.

I still cannot believe they canceled UO2. At the time, it was a very novel idea, complemented with excellent artwork and animation.

I'm still steaming over it to this day. How can a company be so short sighted to cancel a project because it will put subscribers away from an existing game?

WELL YA THE NEXT GENERATION ENGINE IS GONNA PULL SUBSCRIBERS AWAY!

Isn't it better to pull them to another game you own than the competition getting them with their next generation MMORPG?!

Not taking anythign away from UO... but what if they had not cancelled UO2 - at the least it could have given them a leg up on EQ2, WOW etc that came out MUCH later. UO2 was way ahead of its time and would have given them a 3D alternative not to REPLACE but to compliment UO and expand its universe/brand/market penentration. Then you have UXO which was less realistic and more of a fantasy/cartoon approach an attempt to compete with WoW which was abandoned at the last second and it looked like a FUN game to play. So like I said the point should not be to replace UO but expand upon the legacy and brand. If EA doesn't want to directly compete in the PC space make it a console 3D UO title then. However, I don't see why the next one could not finally bridge the PC and console gamers. They have the talent in house, the game engines, the marketing - all the pieces of the puzzle are there - all that is missing is the commitment.

Im all for a UO sequel just as long as they dont make it anything like War,WoW,LoTR, etc. I dont want another mmo of Grind, quest, grind, quest, hit max level and become a bank/auction house sitter. And as long as you can set stuff on the ground! what other games have that? its sounds stupid but its nice to have

I would not start on UO2, as much as I love UO, I have already put in 8+ years in UO why would I want to start another UO from ground up? I'm sure I would not be the only who would feel the same.

Also, considering the last few years how pitiful many of these new "anticipated" MMORPG's have performed since their launch, I would bet a UO2 would fall in the same catagory, especially if its created by a company like EA who often seem to focus on quantity over quality or balance.

I agree this. Plus considering EA thought the next great MMO was gonna be WarHammer Online kinda makes your realize how dumb some of these higher ups in EA are. They don't know the first thing about making or marketing a game unless its another rehash of a rehashed sports title. The only reason UO is a good MMO that EA owns is because they didn't make it in the first place. I tried out the free trial for WarHammer. All i can say is that after messing around with it for about an hour i realized the game was total garbage and not even worth investing another minute in the game. If UO2 was made by the same people who did such a crap job on WarHammer it would bomb. I hate to say it but unless you have someone like Garrett making UO2 it would be crap. The only reason UO is still decent is because alot of what he did is still part of UO today. Seems to me most EA employees only know how to copy someone elses work and make little improvements to it. Every time they try to stand on their own two legs they get tripped....

Because when Origin released the first gameplay teaser, we all crapped brick houses in unison.

At the time, UO2 was a great idea. But I think that was before EA bought out Origin, or was this after? I forget. But IF UO2 was made when it was all planned out, I think it would have had a decent fight against WoW.

I would have been willing to trade off to it.

Quick history lesson so that we can end the whole "when did EA buy OSI" thing:

Ultima Online has ALWAYS been owned by EA.

Baldur's Gate successfully made the transition from a fully 2d to a fully 3d client via the release of Neverwinter Nights. It could happen for UO!

(I can't bring myself to play 2.5d/enhanced client. Either fully 3d or fully 2d for me).

Please... no.

I did play WAR for 10 days before shelving it and the graphics were indeed nice, but live everybody else I didn't pay attention to the graphics after the first hour. On the other hand, those graphics are quite demanding on your computer. Less and less people are likely to upgrade their hardware, seeing most recent 'great looking' games were steaming piles of poo...

Why do you think 10 million people play the obviously outdated WoW graphics?
Because graphics don't mean squat, only gameplay matters.

Ok, I know I'm not up to speed on even 1/2 the stuff that goes on with UO let alone any of the other games out there (yes my daughter installed the wow disk that we got free from somewhere and I looked over her shoulder at it and then promptly told her to take it off my computer. Thats as close as I have come to even looking let alone playing any of the other games). I do understand that a buisness is a buisness and that they are there to make a profit. To do so they have to keep up on what is "hip" and what the new "hot" seller will be, however I do NOT understand not marketing your bread and butter game (the one that pays for your lights to stay on), not giving customer service to that or any other item you may be selling, or WAISTING money on a new product that you get completly finished other then shipping and handleing it to the public and then trashing it!!!!! Other then WAISTING that money, do some market research and come up with a completly new game or like was suggested before putting this game on XBOX. Then with the money you have saved from being smart you can keep all of the people you have working for you, as well as keep all the clients (thats us pee-ons) who will in turn buy more accts, spend more money on pixels from their web site, and continue to bring you a profit. Now once again I do not have a degree in Finance, or Buisness but I do know that a bird in the hand is always better then 2 in the bush!

When you look over what EA Cancelled over the years with Ultima... I'm surprised the company is still trading. They cancelled UO2.. then they restarted it *kinda* in UXO and cancelled that... Umm.. HELLO! EA Are you that stupid?

The one gem that EA's got in MMO is UO, yet they consistantly fail to realise this. *Sighs* Mind you its no wonder that EQ and WoW fair better than our beloved game... Look at the back end running the show. Two companies know how to keep customers, the other... knows how to **** customers off...

Ye good one, EA... Love ya and all.. but

No.

You do have to wonder about EA. Did anyone who worked on Warhammer ever play the tabletop game? That's a wargame, not a role-playing game. Doh!

You would want R Garriot to be involved in any new version to keep it authentic.
