I recently just got back from another stint on an Oil rig.
This one was 135miles off the coast of the North Pole.

And blow me....what did i find in the computer lounge while i was there?
3 roughnecks playing UO :D
Really made the trip better having others know what im on about while i moan about poison training.:scholar:

So it got me thinking, wheres the strangest place youve ever found somebody playing UO?

Kyoto in a Starbucks. You wouldn't believe the girl who was playing. Originally I did a double take because she was beautiful. Then, when I could see her laptop screen and saw her playing UO I did ANOTHER double take.

I used to work sales for a wireless company. Back in '05 or '06 I was setting up a husband and wife team of optometrists with an aircard for one of their laptops. I was trying to find more sales opportunities so I asked what they mainly did on the internet. They kind of shyly said "online gaming". I assumed it was WoW since that was the big thing, so I said "World of Warcraft?" To my suprise they said they played UO.

That was the only time I've run across people irl outside of my rl friends who played UO. We had a funny conversation talking about the game (even tho I was no longer playing at the time) and they admitted that they wanted to have the laptop set up in their office in the back so they could train skills and such while at work. Then they invited me to go there for contacts/glasses and if I wanted I could also see the changes in the game lol. I never did end up going tho.

A friend of mine back in the days when 56k6 was considered the best. Sadly, he grew up whereas I didn't so I don't know anyone irl now playing UO. In fact, I think I've met only 1 or 2 players from my country (NL) mostly Norwegian/Swedish/UK/US/Spain/Italian players.

I never met a rl UO player either until a few days ago...
So like everyday i go to university, sit down and starts listening to the boring professor, then a guy i met the day before asked me if i was playing wow... and with some kind of pride i told him "no, i play the 1st mmo in history" and he answered OMG YOU PLAY UO ?

It came as a shock but we had great fun talking bout it, found out he left the game a year ago but will come back soon so we cud play together, epic !

Found out over a year ago that my sister’s Spanish boyfriend who she lives with in Madrid is right into UO along with a good few of his friends.

It was cool, the last time he was over for a visit in Scotland me and him had a UO session and I was able to help him out with a few items and a new suit for his tamer.

I went over to stay with them during the summer and we had a right good laugh about UO over a few beers discussing all the finer points, I even met one of his RL friends who plays and posts on this very Forum.

The cool thing was, I knew Radix from his Stratics posts before I met him in Madrid, and we all sat and had a good few pints.

:)

Ronald Spiers: You want to know if they're true or not... the stories about uo. Did you ever notice with stories like that, everyone says they heard it from someone who knew someone that played. But then when you ask *that* person, they say *they* heard it from someone who played. It's nothing new, really. I bet if you went back two thousand years, you'd hear a couple of centurions standing around, yakking about how Tertius played.

Hi there,

I started to play summer 98 together with 2 other work colleagues.
At the department I worked we was a total of 18 peeps.

3 years later we were 11 out of 18 ! that played UO.

Guess what we were talking about at work.

I think but not sure that Im the only one left playing UO(from old work that is).

I was working for the Secret Service, flying on Air Force One coming back from El Dorado, when I noticed 3 really hot Blondes huddled over a single Laptop. And sure enough, they were playing UO. I told them I played too. Afterwards we all went back to my hotel room, played UO, had s3x, and then of course I had to kill them.....

I've been dealing in rares in this game since 1998 and some of the buyers I've come to know came from all walks of life. Below are some of the more interesting ones:

State District Attorny - One of the Eastern States
a FBI agent
Son of a Malysian Drug Lord
Multi - Chain fast food restaruant owner. He owned 15 of the same chain restaurants in Southern California.
A famous actor
A famous pro baseball player
Navy Seal
Lots of people from the armed forces, officers and general infantry.
Teachers to Professors.
Many upper level management at fortune 500 companies.

Back in fall of 2001. I got and was in art class in HS. I was using an image from a UO desktop I found as a basic idea for art project. Guy saw it and was like I like that game. Do you play it? Of course said yes. We actually played diff shards. Sonoma for me and Napa and Baja for him.

When i first got involved with UO back in 2000 (was in HS), i joined because 2 friends of mine joined and were bugging me to get in...funny thing was that at the time that was actually the second time i had heard of it. A year prior, during class, i overheard this dude talking about this online game and was just raving about it. i started talking to him and well 2-3 hours later i was completely intrigued. For some reason i simply forgot all about it until a year lated when i discovered that my buds played it religiously. Sure enough i bumped into the first guy who explained UO to me by accident in LS, we had a good talk. But it was a funny coincedence.

This last summer I was driving from Los Angeles to Seattle to surprise my Dad for his birthday. Along the way I stopped at the AM/PM gas station in Creswell, Oregon to put petro in the car, use the restroom, and get some water & a snack.

I pay the cashier, and as he hands me the bag... he looks at my T-shirt, then at me. Then says, "Nok?!" I think he said he plays on Pacific. :)

Hawaii is awesome. Living here is even better. Get the laptop, head out to the beach, set up your blanket, swim for an hour, get back and bust out the laptop for a bit o'UO. Alluva sudden this guy walking past stops. I think he's staring at my tanning bottom, when he walks over, kneels, and points at the monitor saying, "If you turn there, you'll find another valorite spot."

LOL! He was vacationing from Vancouver, BC. and plays Pac as a crafter. I've since been trying to lure him to Napa. ^.^

So... on the beach @ Ala Moana on a 4th of July weekend (4 years ago).

I was playing all summer with this guy and his girlfriend during the orc invasion. after 2 months of chatting with him like everyday we accidently discovered we're both from Canada. OMG same province!...same city? wtf? holy crap he lives like 5 streets away from me! Needless to say I had to go meet them and have a drink.

The one and only person I ever met in RL that even heard of the game.

I have met several people who play the game (that I already knew in game) I have dragged my friends into it as well, but the only time I have ever "ran accross" anyone who played was at a latte stand in Medical Lake, Washington. The guy was being nice and asking how I was doing and I said I was on my way to work. He asked what I did for a living and I told him I work on computers at the base...one thing led to another and we were talking about pvp, blacksmithing and all sorts of fun stuff! I almost finished the latte before I left lol Good thing he wasn't busy that day :) I still see him after all these years but he plays WoW now. I call him bad names and try to get him to come back to UO. He is actually considering it now!!! YAY

Well not really an odd place but...

I started with 2 real life friends back in 1999. Was shopping around, seen it, bought it... got hooked. Then I got my sister playing, my husband and three of his friends and their girlfriends. I formed a guild with 8 real life friends. I also have 3 long term friends I met in UO. One of them just visited me in June of this year, been friends with him for 6 years now. Also, around the year 2000, I met a young and very talkative lad, who was 15... I was 20, helped him through all his high-school years, first girlfriends, through college and he is now a teacher. All thanks to Ultima. =P

Thought I would post a few pics. Perhaps I should start a thread of old events and pictures, that would be neat to see what everyone had.

While taking a E-Commerce class at the College, i found out my classmate used to play UO from 98 - 2004. He was so into it, he had family intervention nights. But now at 25, he's wanting to get back into the game.

I saw him drooling when I loaded up the game on my laptop. He was like a Deer in Headlights.

Apparently there are five other Oceania players in my town, not including the three I knew from RL first. It's a small town and a small shard, so.. it's surprising.

I work for oil & gas industry too, but I sit at the office and don't know anyone out on our fields playing...
Anyway, I was introduced to the game by my former BF, my guildmates and UO friends are/were scattered all over Europe and US. Till now I met only one former player personally. I'm still in touch (virtually) with some people who left the game years ago and they still ask what is it like now and what has changed.

Haha. I used to live at Fairchild AFB as a kid. Dad was in military. If would have stayed there another year would have gone to Medical Lake schools. I do remember them latte stands. They were everywhere. My mom used to stop at them all the time too! haha! There are some other UO players from around there too. Met one from the Valley (I know other side of Spokane). Not IRL, but in game. Me and her actually pretty good friends as well. May come up that way this summer to visit buddy of mine from here in Oklahoma, see what all has changed, and meet up with my UO friend too!

Born and raised in Sandpoint, Idaho, I know Spokane area quite well. I moved to the Valley after high school, joined the Navy and was stationed at Bangor, WA. a couple times, now retired from the Navy still live in Kitsap County as well.
Being in Guardians of Light, allot of our members are from Washington. We have 2 members that live in Spokane along with a couple other part-time UO players that still live there. When GoL does our annual meet-up, we get people coming in from all around the world. This summer we had Heavens Angel fly in from Australia, Apoc, Morty & Brig from Canookia, Tidus from Colorado, Osis & Abbi from Oregon along with a many others. It's always a good time meeting up with the people you play UO with.

The Town Hall meetings were good times as well (when they still happened). Met quite a few UO players at the Seattle Town Hall and still maintain in-game/ICQ friendships with them.

AHHH How cool! I'm from Tulsa Oklahoma and we now live out in the country west of Fairchild (retired Air Force) You didn't miss out on much with the ML school district. I moved my son from there because it was so bad. I put him in podunk Reardan and he did quite well. The latte stands are the bomb! I bet I would get along really well with your mom lol I'm a latte FREAK!
