[BUG] UO is the greatest MMO on the market...

...unless you find yourself crashing every five minutes. Then it flat out sucks. Developers, is it too much to ask for you to fix the *&^%! crashing in the enhanced client?

It's the same old thing that used to happen, and then was fixed, and now since the second to last publish, is happening more than ever. It has to do with movement and, presumably, the loading of dynamic objects.

I don't want to go back to the "classic" client, my only other option if this keeps up is to shut down my accounts and go find some other MMO to play where I won't be crashing in pvp every five minutes.

Over a year of playing the enhanced client, and I've had to put up with this same crash for all of that but maybe a month or two, and now it is worse than ever. I really want to say much more, but I think getting banned from Stratics would be an even worse way to end up what has been a godawful few hours in UO...

Ok, after my little temper tantrum, I ran a client file check, then I checked the hard drives that both the main client files, and the client profile files were on for errors, and I rebooted. After that everything ran much better...

This is not the first time that I've improved the problem of the enhanced client crashing greatly by running a file check and a hard drive error check. I don't have to do this with other games I play. This leads to a question, what is it about the enhanced client that is causing it to be susceptible to problems with corrupted files? Is there a problem with the patching process which is leading to issues with corrupted files, or is it something else?

Can you post your system specs?

Ok, can't upload my dxdiag.txt, so I'm going to post it here.

Is there are an area where you crashing more often on a particular shard? Do you have particular steps which will reproduce the crash?

The person who has spent more time under the hood of the EC than anyone else in the player community is Pinco, Stephen. You might want to have a chat with him. I believe he can detail, in specific terms you both understand, what's broken and where.

I'm sure you'd agree that UO's chief competitive peril has not been other games: it's bugs. And if UO is to have a future it must attract new players. Best hope for that is to first have a robust EC.

As for other information that may be helpful. I do not use any "speed hacks", or a proxy service of any kind. I have a DIR-825 router with DD-WRT firmware (a Linux mini-distro). My connection to the internet is through a Motorola SB5100 cable modem. I've used most of the Windows networking tweaks found here with a few exceptions. I do not have the ECN capability activated, and while I have not disabled Nagling, I have lowered TcpDelAckTicks from 2 to 1.

Is there are an area where you crashing more often on a particular shard? Do you have particular steps which will reproduce the crash?
Yes, absolutely. It happens most often in and around Yew moongate in Fel while I'm playing on a dexxer (on both the Catskills and Atlantic shards). It happens most often when I am moving at cap speed, and changing directions quickly and often. I believe that the issue there is the loading of many dynamic objects. I've talked to Pinco about this, and this is what he seems to think. And of course it would make sense that if files pertaining to the dynamic objects, or the loading of dynamic objects, have become corrupted, then rapid movement through areas where those objects would load would be likely to cause crashes. Or it could be that the loading of dynamic objects is in some way causing the corruption.

I can't say whether I have the same problem in Luna because I don't spend that much time there, although I have run for great distances through large parts of Malas containing a great number of houses, and I have not noticed the problem there. For some reason the problem appears to be worse in Felucca.

Actually, it just occurred to me that something I do may be causing issues. I will sometimes run two clients at the same time, either 2 enhanced, or 1 enhanced and 1 classic. I have two accounts and I do this to help get spellweaving focuses, or to have one character wait out stat while I play the other, or for pet training, etc.

It used to be that I couldn't play my dexxer in Fel while a character on my other account was waiting out stat without experiencing crashes, but then a few months ago after that publish that was supposed to fix some of the worst of the crashing issues with the EC, I was able to. Then two publishes ago I was no longer able to, however I discovered that if I waited out stat on the classic client I could play in the enhanced client.

But yesterday that changed and I suddenly started crashing in the EC even if I was waiting out stat on the classic client, and in fact I crashed multiple times when I was only running one UO client. That was when I started to rant...

I just experienced another crash with the same MO and I checked my disks for errors and there were none. So while that might be part of the reason why I was getting so many crashes, it clearly isn't the only reason.

I should also note that I wasn't running two clients at the time of the last crash, and the crashes are always the same - straight to the desktop with no error messages, the client simply disappears. I can also provide a SANDRA diagnostic printout of some sort if that would be any help.

Try a this few things:

set the cache setting to 256 MB default value
delete the uod files in your usersettings directory
load the standard interface
try to disable vsync

crash appearing every few minutes are not normal

It's not crashing every few minutes now, and I've tried even completely disabling the cache setting, and it made no difference. As for loading the standard interface, the enhanced client isn't worth playing for me with the standard interface. My entire playstyle is based on options that are only available to me through Pinco's UI. Another thing I can do however is provide a list of running processes. I'll even do it manually if I can't figure out a way to print it out.

It's also worth noting that I am not the only person experiencing this, and others I have discussed this with describe it in exactly the same way as I have, including the fact that it almost disappeared after that publish that fixed some of the major crash issues, then started up again worse than ever a couple of publishes ago.

One thing that's really improved, Llewen, is the way your dragon signature image looks in the new Stratics forum. :)

The list and nature of problems with the EC, Pinco or no Pinco, Lucitus or no Lucitus, user configurations, cache settings and all that are not relevant really. They have been reported and are known. This client carries a beta tag over two years after its release after all. By definition this means there is a list of fatal discrepancies and has been for some time.

Only reason I'm rehashing the obvious or even posting on Stratics again, is because I too have reached the point where I need more than the appearance of solicitude to carry on.

Stephen - it would be positive, productive and fruitful if you acknowledge what you know is broken and shared the plans of the development team to address them beginning with critical and fatal errors in your bug tracking software. The approach taken in this thread could give the impression that you're unaware of these issues and that wouldn't be fair.

Thank you.

IMHO the latest client damages makes UO the greatest clientless MMO on the market...
CC: old and sad to see... is a shame to even see the screenshot taken from CC in the home page...
EC: broken and born old. The more time it pass the worst it became...

We are all paying 13€/month to hope in some changes that probably never arrives... if EA is willing to keep UO alive MUST invest and improve it to bring it out of the '90s (by seriously improving the client at least) or just use the 15th anny to close it and thanks everyone for their money.
Actually they are just leeching money and keep the game in this limbo where everyone keeps their accounts active just for not lose their items ...

Well, I crashed two times today on my tamer this time, in addition to the crashes on my dexxer. So I'm thinking that is at least 4 times today. Once with my tamer the EC was all I was running, the other time I was running the CC in addition to the EC. One thing that does seem to be common is that often my movement starts getting choppy before I crash, and in that case I'd have to guess there is some kind of memory leak involved. The crashes usually happen when I'm pvp'ing, so I'm not generally in a position to be paying close attention to my video or system memory usage.

Just a heads up we have made another stability pass on the EC which will greatly decrease the number of crashes when loading dynamic objects. These changes will be going out with the next publish. Thanks again for all of the information that was provided.

Thanks Bleak!

P.S. Could you fix books in the EC so they are useable?

I just spent a good five to ten minutes being chased like mad all around Yew gate in Fel. I barely lagged at all, and I didn't crash once, or even feel like I came close to it. It was beautiful! Thank you so much!
