this affects only the *patcher* of the enhanced client so even during this maint window people can still navigate to Program Files -> Electronic Arts -> Ultima Online Stygian Abyss and run UOSA directly, correct?

That is how I run most of the time anyway.... faster load on re-starts. Just create a new shortcut icon pointing to the UOSA.exe file.

I have the client exe file for direct loading on my Win 7 task bar for quick launch and then the shortcut for the patch program to load is on the desktop and in the start menu. Each are used as necessary.

Well it missed the boat to Hawaii because I'm getting the Patch Error Message:Yes maintenance ended earlier than expected
"The patch encountered corruption on the file [notes/unpacked/9bcb753d9753623d] on the remote server. Please try the patch operation again."
FWIW, it's only 8:07AM Hawaiian Time.
That's the error message that happens if you attempt to patch while a new patch is in the middle of being uploaded to the patch server.
It's not related to the maint - you just hit the exact wrong minute to start UO.

I think they should make it like the 2d patcher in a way that if you fail to connect to a patch server you still may start the client, and log in (if the version is up to date, or get the error message that you need to patch up).

I mentioned the fact that I'm in Hawaii didn't I?
EA/Mythic is on the east coast. When I woke this morning, which is earlier than the roosters, the time given by Chrissay had just about ended. Knowing this, I didn't even attempt a log in until several hours later (I woke at 4am, I attempted several log ins, over a period of 7 minutes from 8AM to just before the time I posted, so I could get the wording of the error message correctly). I should not have hit an error message as several hours past the deadline Chrissay gave had already passed. So I don't know what uploading/downloading you are talking about.
For all intents and purposes, and according to the timeline Chrissay gave, I should have been able to login without having the error message (i.e.; Timeline equivalent to HST = 11:00PM 9/21 to 5:00AM today).
Since there was no more posts relating to a delay or some such, I decided to post my encounter here. I still thought it necessary to bring it to a developer's attention. Otherwise I wouldn't have wasted anyone's time.
Anyway, everything seems to working fine now. Thanks anyway.
Regardless, I'm in a hurry, bitchy and now I'm out the door heading to my doctor's.
