There was hardly anything left after they were done. He’d borne witness to the frantic looting of the castle and had found himself only able to escape with his life. It was unthinkable, and as such it had caught him and seemingly everyone else completely unawares. Explosions were set off throughout the capital city…though there wasn’t much point in even calling it the capital city anymore at this point. Britannia was on the brink of collapse into a fully-fledged group of independent city-states, like Nujel’m had always been. All he had been able to salvage were the clothes on his back and the rumpled piece of cloth in his hand. He thought back to the incident in his head, still confused over the choice he’d made…
The fighting was getting closer, and he’d managed to wrap up a dozen or more bottles from the cellar into his tattered cloak, gathering it up and cinching it into a makeshift sack. The shouts were louder, and the wind brought the scent of smoke through the open windows, mingling in with the smell of the bay in a way that was at once intoxicating and stifling. He could hear the clashing of blade against armor, and when the sound carried right, the screams mingled with the howl of metal against armor, flesh, and bone. Time was quickly running out as he made his way to the front gates, stumbling upon something left on the ground. He looked up to see a crowd forming past the iron portcullis that protected his master’s home…and he could smell the scent of gunpowder. His eyes wide with terror, he turned to gather up his scattered bottles even as he heard the gates being assaulted and scaled. His attention was grabbed once more by the old hat, the one ragged corner missing its’ bell, and his fuzzed thoughts clarified for an instant as he thought back to what an old gypsy had told him years ago.
“Sometimes in the darkest nights where we feel we are but a pawn,
Our true identity and importance is revealed to bring about the dawn.”

He seized upon the piece of fabric, intending to grasp the bottles as well when some of the crowd had already scaled the great gates that protected the castle. Within an instant they were grabbing everything in sight. He struggled to get to the gates, fighting past the mob that seemed intent on looting anything they could find, but he wasn’t making enough headway. The gates were flung open and he managed to get past them and onto the bridge, but a passerby suddenly knocked him into the railing. Windmilling his arms desperately, he felt his balance vanish as he went over the edge into the water, his fingers tightly gripping the hat he had once worn so proudly. As he struggled to kick his way back up a concussive wave suddenly struck, and debris began to sink down into the bay around him. Breaking the waters’ surface, he could see the remains of the castle that he had called home for so long; now naught but broken mortar, pulverized brick, and blazing tinder. Anything left of the bridge that could be of use was gone, and bodies and boards alike floated along the water’s edge as the soft lapping current of the bay pushed them towards the shore. As he finally got to dry land, he found the hat still clutched in his grasp, the only thing he’d saved from the castle. Somehow, even with the tragedy and horror unfolding around him, this one thing felt right.
Time hadn’t helped him figure out why it was important to him. It had been forgotten and left to rot as long as he himself had. Still, the gypsy’s words resonated within him and he wondered if this really meant anything, or if it was just the newest in a long series of jests that fate had played on yet another pawn on the chessboard. And if for some reason the gypsy’s words were true then, the warning she gave him later may yet hold water.
“When the yearning arises and all things are taken,
The one sealed away will begin to awaken.”

An involuntary shiver ran through him, and he knew it was from more than just thinking about the chill that the water had left him with.

Nice story... Far superior writing to what we received a year ago.

But...way too vague. We are left to assume that it is Blackthorn's keep being referenced. Why was it torched, instead of the seat of the feckless ruling body in Castle Britannia?

The throw-away characters and lack of over-arching coherent substance between acts is getting old. Exodus is waking. We get it. It's past time this was a cohesive narrative that flowed organically from act to act.

**** read this...

Guessing when this new monster wakes up.......its gonna need 2 dozen people to take it down again- all with greater dragons....seems like this event will end with no player being able to prgress again unless in a large guild.....this is gonna suck big time

I think you are right. I have a hard, hard time reading most of these event stories. But this one feels more fluent, and coherent.

I wonder if it is a new writer (no offense intended to past authors), or if perhaps just getting better with practice?

Warriors of Destiny fiction was written by at least 4 different authors and thus suffered from the "too many fingers in the pie" syndrome. Plus, Mythic admitted they didn't bother to keep the UO story bible updated...and at least one of the authors didn't bother to read the preceding stories. Thus WoD, and the subsequent In the Shadow of Virtue were a complete mess, stylistically, grammatically and continuity-wise.

The EMs seem to have a fair amount of input into the fiction for this arc. In fact, I believe Jeff said that the EMs had laid out at least some of the arc themselves. The fiction they have produced is mechanically superior to the last few years, however, the overall narrative is lacking in a coherent through-story. We seem to be getting brief snippets of story without each part really feeling a "part of the others," they feel a tad disjoined - as if they were missing a chapter-like endings.

My sources say that the event arc is almost entirely EM based. I think thats a good thing the EM talent pool is getting pretty deep lately and I trust Mesanna.

i think they leave alot out of these stories since its all different from shard to shard. Since each shards EM is altering the details, they cant have a finely detailed overall story. just a thought.

If this writing is "Far" superior writing to what we received a year ago, then that is pretty pathetic. I don't know though, I wasn't playing last year.

My guess is that in-game events are meant to complete the story, and the writing is meant to supplement (or vice versa). Still, they make it too hard for the few of us who care to follow and understand what's going on and give us a reason to spend the time reading it. What's important, what isn't. Too much mystery and filler. At least for me anyway. (I know some other posters here have said I'm lacking in the reading comprehension department, but I don't think so. I follow classic, long works like Atlas Shrugged and Les Miserables just fine.)

I got the feeling (although completely wrong) and would bet that the character in Act III is Spoiler
going to be the new monarch to lead the virtue towns in typical rags to riches style.

How's that for reading comprehension?:dunce:

And those of us who aren't there at EM events don't get partake in momentous gameworld-changing events. Nice.

Not exactly what I am saying is that for the live event this year the EMs (one EM team for the most part) did the writing and came up with the story idea. Not the mechanics to my knoweledge. So its not only EM events that will drive the live event but if you do miss the live event you miss it.

It is. It really, really is. There was a Minax story, one of the Lost & Found stories, that had her "looking though her mascara," looking at one of her minions "like a swamp dragon looks at a bog thing," casting a "runegate," etc. This was written by the same Dev that was drinking a beer during one of the video chats...

edit: Oh, and she had "big, red lips" as well. It was just a horrid story all around.

Indeed. However, if you aren't on GL (yes, I'm a wee bit biased here) your shard's story probably makes little sense. EM Malachi started the run up to this arc last September, so GL makes sense. However, the blowing up of the bridge to Blackthorn's keep and the subsequent fire therein, makes NO sense.

You are far more charitable than I...

I'm afraid that they are setting the stage for some sort of player-run shard government. There is no way in Hell that could ever not be an unmitigated disaster. King/Queen K3wl |>3\/\/d...

they are setting the stage for Lord British to swoop in on his spaceship and destroy exodus, in doing so he opens a blackhole that sucks UO into it and it comes out the other side as UO 2: The Facebook lame game

My sources have also told me that its not the GL EM team that has put in most of the creative effort in this

Well that told me nothing. Apparently some castle somewhere was wrecked, and some guy picked up some bottles.

Oh well THAT explains why we go to some tavern, then robots, punchcards, nexus. All makes sense now.

WTF was the purpose of this fiction? It relates to nothing and illuminates nothing.

they arent supposed to lead you by the hand, the flier for the tavern was more than enough hint at what to do. you must not have done UO events before, theyve done it similar to this for along time. You get a hint of where to start and thats it. The fiction is just a nice RP piece, if you go back now and reread the other parts some things tie together.

Okay, now if I didn't come to Stratics, how would I know this exists?
the Herald is only Re posted here, you can always continuously check there for updates, get a feeder or something, listen to chat on all shards 24/7, you'll hear.
as it was explained to me... if you aren't smart enough to figure out how to find the information, then you don't deserve the content.
nice, for something you pay for, eh? I couldn't find any posts either here, nor the LS em site about the easter bunny, so i got nuttin', guess that's the loser I am

its a MMO so gen chat or other players can help if you didnt use stratics. it would be nice though if they kept the patcher screen updated with uoherald posts. Heck why isnt there a link to stratics/uhall on the patcher or Uoherald.com?

As has been mentioned, the [UO Herald] posts on Uhall are posted automatically when a new article appears in the UO Herald RSS Feed.

The same RSS feed can work for you.
Many email clients allow you to set up RSS feeds to act in a similar way to mail accounts, so that when a new entry appears in the feed, it "arrives" the next time your client checks it in a similar way to new mail.

Welp, played a few hours on Atlantic tonight, and while I can't promise that someone didn't squeak out a reference to this event somewhere amid all the PVP tears in General Chat, I personally heard not a peep to indicate that it exists.

I guess this is an event for forum people only.

The character in Act III is most likely
Heckles, jester for the late Lord Blackthorn. He is mostly known for being present when Rainz killed Lord British during the UO Beta in 1997 :)
