I have never had any dislike for UO nor do i like to post anything negative.... but this is really getting to be a very stupid trend! I don't have nor own ethy clothing, though I won't slam someone if that is their choice to wear in game. After all, we all have things we enjoy. Something tells me in RL you probably are not a fashionista, but I digress.

My point is that the tub would be recognized as an obvious dupe/ bug (addressed in three days) where ethy items... not so much (what, 5-6 years or more?). It is odd to react to something so fervently when it has been in game so long, NOT addressed. And therein lies the issue of others perhaps not knowing it was FROM a bug. And buying it. And being, now, penalized for it.

I would have zero issue if this had been addressed and rectified in, say, 2004. But it wasn't. So I question the intelligence and wisdom of those wanting to 'fix' it now.

As I said before: make a quest for a limited time you can do one per character to obtain an ethy piece of clothing, if thats what it comes down to. But don't change them back and penalize those who own these things.

I can't comment on when this issue was first introduced, but for those wondering why we made this post now - it came to our attention that some people were paying exorbitant prices for what they assumed was a rare/unique item.

This is not the intention and we do not want players to be impacted by these extreme prices.

I bought a set of ethereal clothing a long time ago and I didn't know there was anything illegal about it. I'm sure there are many others who didn't know either. We are going to get punished now just because someone took a chance on something that turned out not to be the real deal? I'm sorry they lost out, but you know what they say... "buyer beware!" In my opinion, it was their fault/choice to have made that purchase. You should not punish the rest of us for that.

Why not just make a statement informing people that clothing that looks pure black in a vendor's backpack might not be ethereal and tell them not to buy it because it might not be what the seller says it is?

People get scammed in UO every day, probably all day long... since when do you come to their rescue? Seriously. All I hear people say is that they are told lost items are not replaced. I never hear about EA/Mythic stepping in to deal with scammers. Perhaps I just don't hear about the scammers getting punished? I don't know.

Someone mentioned 35m, in a post above this one. Is that how much the fake ethy cloak was? Whoever bought it should have suspected it was a fake, just because of the low price. If they only lost 35m, then that wasn't bad for an important lesson learned.

By the way, 35 million is not much money anymore, at least not to most rares collectors.

To the liar who put a black cloak on their vendor and said it was ethereal - I'm sorry no one took the time to teach you right from wrong. It isn't too late for you to learn though.

This is all messed up, James. Please think it over. The ethereal clothing is cool and I would appreciate it if you don't destroy it.

It's not the "pixels" that irritates me. It's the hit and miss policies, the emphasis on fixes for things that are not important to the ability to play the game properly and the vague and weak excuses for why they are doing things.

I've never exploited bugs in the game. I wouldn't know where to begin to dupe something. However, I listen and I read. I've heard over and over and over that the dye tubs get "bugged" by selling them to a vendor and re-purchasing them. Don't you think somewhere along the line that the devs would say, "Hey, why don't we see what happens when we sell this new tub to a vendor and re-purchase it BEFORE WE RELEASE IT IN GAME." But no, they release new tubs, wait for the exploiters to go test it out. Then they patch it to fix it, but the exploiters have already stock-piled dyed items to make gobs of money from.

If it's that difficult to write code properly for items to be colored in the intended manor, then stop trying to put limits on colors for anything. Let people dress like rainbow brite and decorate their house like a monument to Richard Simmons. Who really cares?

Stop spending time on fixes for things that do NOT have an impact on game play and spend that time on fixing bugged encounters, un-balanced characters, and exploits that give unfair advantages in gameplay. How's that 3rd party detection coming along, because I still see blatant use of them daily.

Some good history in this thread. Well, I think all bugs and exploits should be fixed, at some point ... I guess banning dupers and exploiters at the source is too hard.

Any illegal item should be wiped off of any shard. Period.

While some of them are cool and I like them, I agree with this statement.

Also, they should be able to track those broken pieces of armor with insane resist and delete those as well.

The big difference between the jet black furniture and the ethereal clothing is that the furniture was created because a developer error (they released a black tub but forget to limit the usability of the tub to furniture) i.e. a "developer BUG" and the ethereal clothing was created using a EXPLOIT (dog dupe exploit).

The devs decision to fix ethereal clothing is wrong imho. But, if they fix that then they should need to know more about other doggy dupes:

* Two-tone Pike (doggy dupe of "Pacify")
* Two-tone Red hallberd
* Necro Blue Robe (doggy dupe of the Robe that actually wear 2 necromancers npcs in Umbra mage shop)
* Two-tone yellow cloth
* Europa Gold clothing (please dont say that ppl claimed millions of gold sashes on spring cleaning 2008 just to cut them on the first days)
* Glacial dagger, bandana, pants, war mace, butcher knife & pickaxe
* Two-tone "dyed" clothing artifacts (this was the last exploit that involved the new metallic dye tub.. the exploit was fixed but of course the cloth remains dyed)
* Tons of duped rares like lt sashes, gladiator collars, 2story statues, etc etc
* TONS of other items that were created by the stealing exploit (already fixed like a month ago)


My biggest concern is that the code the devs are going to write to "fix" that kind of stuff its very very very probably that will break something else.
As an example, some pubs ago the devs runs some code to change the color of every "A gargoyle pickaxe" to a new color. Why? no one knows why they spend time to do that, but with that silly change they removed the glacial color to 3 very old "A gargolyle's pickaxe" that were handed out in a event on chesapeake. There was 3 more gargoyle's pickaxe colored with Fire, and im sure those now have a normal color.
So what's going to happen when they write the code to fix the ethereal clothing? ANYTHING could happen, but of course the real ethereal items are going to be lost.

My proposal:
Create a [Replica] of Ethereal Clothing with durability.
(if the replicas can drop on dungeons that no one has visited in the last 5 years like Wrong, Covetous, Ice, Orc, Wind, etc ... oh that will be a blast)
