Please be aware that ethereal clothing items are currently hued the wrong color. This is in error and will be corrected, players are advised not to pay exorbitant prices for these items as they will be returned to their default state, thank you.

I have many reactions, some of which are contradictory of one another.

  • Why is this the second item on the Herald when it's obviously the most recent? Oh well, weirdness happens.
  • Why bother with an item that conveys no obvious advantage?
  • About time!
  • Glad they are getting rid of an illegal item; any illegal item is bad.
  • Are they somehow just becoming aware of it, or did they finally get around to fix it, or maybe no obvious way to fix it presented itself until now?
  • I feel sorry for those who bought them recently.
  • I have no sympathy for those who bought them recently, as anyone who can afford one should know the game well enough to know they weren't legal in the slightest.
  • Perhaps they are fixing it now because they intend to sell a similar item for RL money.
  • I actually wouldn't necessarily mind them doing that if they did.

At the end of the day, though, I simply find it hard to find fault with fixing a bug. Bugs have long-presented a significant obstacle to judging this game, as it's simply been too hard to tell how things are supposed to work.

So:

But my biggest reaction of all is....I am still waiting to hear more about the server status and the downtime. And to see the video.

Those are my feelings. It is a very obvious way though, so that doesn't work. Very simple fix. No idea why it took them YEARS to get around to fixing them..

You know, I don't own one of these but I am a bit taken back they choose NOW (!!??) to 'fix' this.

I've played on and off for 11 years. I still have no idea how these ethereal clothing items came into play, just that... they are here. But I DO know that they have been in game for SEVERAL years.

It isn't game breaking, I wonder how many actually know how they were created, and they have been in game for (literal) years. As I've said on other threads, not all players understand the history of every little item in the game. Heck, especially with the ton of EM items available nowadays, its next to impossible unless you are a hardcore UO'er or rares dealer. I know I'm not, and I have had spells where I have played UO extensively.

I understand 'gameplay may change'. I also understand that if this was INDEED a huge issue, it should have been fixed when it reared its head. And it simply wasn't. And now you have items that have been in UO for a long time and only NOW are they being addressed. IMO, that is unfair to many who may have bought these in the past not knowing their origins.

I'd ask the dev team to reconsider, and possibly build an in game quest that would allow ONE character per account to create an ethy piece of clothing. At least that way, it would then be 'legal' and open it up to players to create a piece of clothing that was ethereal without the market being totally slammed (as it would be 1 article per account). Or something like that. I just think that some of this responsibility should be shouldered by the UO team for not taking the necessary steps right away.

Not everyone reads stratics. Not everyone plays UO consistently or for its 13 years in existence. Not everyone knows what is a 'legal' rare. And to sit on something like this for years and take no action until NOW seems a bit heavy handed.

If your going to take them away then you should take away all the fake rares at once. I dont want the stuff taken away but i mean whats the dif between this cloth and the glacial items?

Note to Self: Next time someone asks if I mind they sell Ethy stuff.... SAY YES.

Well, it goes back to the whole 'they've sat on this for years' deal.

I also have no clue where glacial items came from. So hey, there you go. And no, I don't own any glacial items either, just saying.

If there is something I need to know in game (which there is a lot I don't, tbh), I usually ask the same two people all the time (Malag Aste or Ra'Dian Fl'Gith, who post on these boards). But I don't ask about every little thing in game, nor should I have to. I shouldn't have to automatically assume an item is illegal and go asking around.

So it's not the cloaks as everyone was so quick to jump to the conclusion of. Hard to say what the new method of making these items is but who wants to make bets they "fix" the cloaks too? Unintentionally I'm sure. :mf_prop:

Next bet:

This thread is the first time they ever heard of the etheral cloaks.

New rumor:

What about the etheral crooks?

Oh noes! I let another illegal thing out of the bag!

They have been slowly deleting them over the last week.. seen a few get popped at rares fest and on atlantic.

I also saw a few doggy duped items get nailed off of vendors (two tone halbred / broad swords)

my opinion is keep it coming, theres too many things out there that people have made ludicrous amounts of gold and RL cash off of. i dont really care where it came from, but if it was illegal it needs to be gone. glacial clothing is next i suppose? nice color but good riddance

This is the problem.. There's so many duped things, in particular in the clothing area.. to just pick the ethereal stuff, after it's been in the game for years, and not anything else.. is rather, well, dumb.

I find this kinda funny to delete an item that has been around for years and does nothing special to the character. So what is the next item to delete? The glacial items: books, bandanas, pickaxe, pants, etc. I mean how many REAL sashes, robes, and hats were there originally? One per shard? One item per shard? Look at all the real sashes that are out there, its a joke.
What about a fix for items that were dyed using a metal dye tub like robes. When individuals obtained white leather tubs and done the trick to turn them so they could dye cloth, UO put in white cloth dye tubs as loot on pirate ships, so I want to see a "halloween cloth (2tone)" dye tub come out.

:thumbup1:

Any illegal item should be wiped off of any shard. Period.
The issue I have is that it should have been done YEARS ago, and some people in the YEARS they have allowed this to be in game may have no clue what they bought what an illegal item. After all, it isnt like they didn't resolve this dupe/ whatever when it FIRST. HAPPENED.

Hey folks,

I can't comment on when this issue was first introduced, but for those wondering why we made this post now - it came to our attention that some people were paying exorbitant prices for what they assumed was a rare/unique item.

This is not the intention and we do not want players to be impacted by these extreme prices.

I hope that clarifies the issue, thanks all :)

Then make it a quest item that one person per character or account can do to get a piece of ethereal clothing. Have it set for a limited time like the slime title quest. That way it can still be a bit of a rare to those who enjoy that kind of market. Yes, it will open the market a bit, but at least you aren't totally upsetting those people who already own one.

For the record, I don't really care for ethereal wear nor do I own any. I can only think though how upset someone who did not know its origins would be at hearing their item was set for possible deletion. You may not be able to comment on ethereal wear's time frame, but let me help you. It's been around for YEARS. Not weeks, not months... YEARS.

I'm curious to know who "assumed" that this was a unique --- it is a buyer beware world and people can be informed and do the research themselves about any items that are unsure about. This issue was introduced back when doggie duped items were created through a bug....and that was YEARS ago. It is outrageous that many people you mentioned, who paid these "exorbitant prices," will now suffer and lose out on items they spent hard earn money on.

Ironic, as Mesanna just re-dyed a throne jet black, which was caused due to a bug when the jet black dye tub was introduced. So who gets to pick and choose?

What about sigil? Which was illegal for a long period of time, and is no longer legal?

Why wait so long to do something about it, while people using the mechanics of exploit have profited tremendously. Since this item did originate from a UNIQUE item....the person was aware of what was happening, and continued to, and so on.

Ethy isn't the biggest concern....it's knowing what else is just going to be reverted...or not. Or be allowed as exceptions due to bugs....or not...

i don't know what etherial clothes are, never heard of them, but if you let them stay in game for so long my reaction is mixed. part of me wants to agree with the hardliners that any duped item should be deleted, but are these even duped? or just bugged? the other part of me says since they convey no advantage and you left them in game for so long, they should stay in as-is...... and then a quest or new drop should be put in to obtain ethy clothing. which, as providing a new supply, it will naturally drop the value of the bugged item. but at least someone can't say you took their 30 million gold item away from them.

Umm what?
This stuff has been going on since the clothing was created.
Were the "people" who spent the "exorbitant" prices new members of the dev team who now feel scammed because they are uneducated about what has been going on in this game for the past decade?
Why has it been ok for all of this to be going on for all this time and only NOW we care about people paying for/buying/selling these items?

Just when I start to think there's no hope for UO, there IS!

Fantastic!

Those exploit black faction guard horses next?

P.S.

Is the ethereal clothing what's been causing issues with servers?

On Test Sosaria certain items of etheral clothing and bolts of ethereal cloth caused UO to close on some people, and there was no way to get back in game until that item was removed from the same screen as the player's character.

Black horses should just spawn in the wild ..... that would end that and bottom out the prices on them.

Easy fix.

Agreed. Make them 1:100 or 1:1000. That keeps them a bit rare still.

These are easy fixes to these problems. I'm unsure why the UO team seems to usually take an all or nothing approach. Heck, most of them don't even play this game. It isn't putting them out.

If the devs were to delete every bugged or duped item in the game, Museums all around will go empty. No one actually knows if their coveted rare item is a dupe or not. Sure some are obvious but others are not.

If they go deleting items by the troves, I'm out.

Not that i want to correct you, but it was not an issue with the item being over priced. I guess it is missed by ea/devs we are pixel crack addicts! We love ALL DIFFerent kinds of stuff, and we will pay for it.

This was only brought your attention this weekend when somone put a fake one on a vendor, and scammed someone out of 35 mil. Had it been an honest trade, you would have not heard about it this last weekend.

I have to agree with other folks who have spoken up. To allow a known bug/item remain in a game for years. Then just change or delete them, is wrong! Thinks about my long lost oak leaf boots.. .. and and robe that changed into a monks robe. I dont know who else was ticked off about that!? I guess the only suggest is EA has to have the bugs out of the game before its release, once its out there, folks should not lose or get in trouble for bugs in the game. ITS NOT RIGHT!

James - SO WHAT?

I mean - really - so what?

If they have the money to pay for a ethereal item and it is pure vanity - then who is being harmed here?

The player who finds a way to create/obtain it who profits? Or the player who gladly forks over their gold because they think it looks cool?

You might as well ban glacial hair dye too b/c people pay alot for that. I mean its not fair to the army green color that the glacial blue goes for 20mil.

You guys have really lost sight of what is important in this game. Mechanics, gameplay and the like.

If my dog takes a crap in the yard and it turns out it looks like a picture of George Washington and I convice my neighbor its rare and he pays me $1000 for it - will I get arrested? No. He's happy with his purchase and I just sold dog crap for $1000.

No one is forcing ANYONE to buy these colored robes and they do not affect gameplay.

You should allow these things to happen as 'part of the game' that makes it intersting.

I could care less that someone makes 200m in gold selling them to vanity loving players that think it makes them look cool. Who cares? The vanity players are happy, the seller is happy.

As a disclaimer - I don't own any cloaks, I don't know how they come into being, I've never sold one and I would never buy one because I think its stupid. But some people like em.

You are incorrect.

I played test shards for 2 years beginning in 2004.

Hanse was one of the UO designers (he designed Malas) who came onto Test Sosaria, which was a so-called 'permanent' test shard.

Test Sosaria was around for over 7 months, possibly a full year, I just played on it for 7 months before it was taken down and turned into Origin shard.

Hanse gave a friend an ethereal universal dye tub, the friend's name was Noxin, his UO girlfriend's name was Wildcat. Wildcat was rumored to have the tub at times. (Although most of the time the person dying things ethereal was stealthing).

A universal dye tub will dye almost anything ingame. Hanse also set up a small house attached to the guard tower in Britain, and installed 8 universal dye tubs in cool colors like invul blue.

He co-owned a few players who friended other players and we dyed stuff for players who weren't accessed.

Wildcat friended me to the dye house. (I was Vixen back then).

The dye house eventually had some bolts of cloth locked on its steps, and the person who had the universal ethy dye tub dyed those bolts ethereal and crashed those of us who were on older computers or older Operating systems. We never knew exactly why it crashed us.

My comp then was a pentium 2 with win 98 and it crashed me.

The UO client closed instantly and totally and refused to open unless the char or the offending etheral item was moved off screen. You'd have to move the character on a newer computer to get UO to reopen, or get someone else to move the item for you via icq, since you couldn't get back in game.

Noxin or Wildcat (or whoever had the tub by then) also dyed some tame deer with the universal ethereal dye tub and parked them at Brit bank. We had living ethereal deer on display.

:)

Ethereal bolts, mage hats and gilded dresses caused me to crash, other types of ethereal cloth or clothing didn't.

I did love my ethereal plain dress. No bra lines.

I think the Throne and the Ethy cloak are two different things.

1. The black throne was a 3day bug that was introduced when Black dye tubs were created. From what I was told there is a record of that being acceptable which is why it was turned back.

2. Ethy cloaks were duped on purpose by players just like the neon hooded shrouds and Vine cord sandals. As Jeremy Delburg said in the Five on Friday May 9, 2008

"I didn't know the Vine Cord Sandals were duped, and I spent a lot of money on them! How do I avoid this situation in the future?"

It's a very tough situation. There are thousands of different items in UO - some common, some rare, some truly unique. They come from dozens of different sources - some are looted from monsters, some are received from quests or events, some are stolen from NPCs. There is no easy way to catalogue each of them. Your best bet for information about the lore of a particular item is your fellow players - either in game, or on a forum like Stratics or UO Forums

If you are planning to buy an unusually expensive item, do your homework. Make sure the vendor you're dealing with has a good reputation, and make sure the item you're buying isn't... notorious. Because we are committed to cleaning up dupes, exploits, and cheats, there's no guarantee that an illegitimate item will still be there tomorrow, and owning these items - particularly in large quantities - puts you at risk of account action.

I'm glad they are fixing this, because it was obviously causing pvp imbalance. Ummmm wait, maybe it was making mystics over-powered as a class. No, that wasn't it. Surely it has to effect gameplay negatively in some way. I mean, the priority is on making sure that the game mechanics work smoothly, not about what color someone's clothing is.

So... let me get this straight.

Bugs they tend to right away are okay. If things come of it, oh well... lets just keep them in game, even though its painfully obvious they were developed from a bug due to the small window of time they were available.

Bugs that they have sat on for YEARS to the point that many probably don't even know they were bugged in the first place is NOT okay. People who have bought these from others, which came from yet others, passed down over years,, etc etc... because sometimes to the more casual player things get lost to history. AGAIN... not okay.

There is something seriously, seriously wrong with that logic.

Exorbitant prices?

Really?

The Britannian Ship is at an exorbitant price. Any EM event item goes for an exorbitant price. Legs of the Insane Tinker and many Primeval Lich deco items go for an exorbitant price. Going to go after those next?

35m really isn't very expensive anymore... Tangles went for more when they came out.

But seriously, 'fixing' an item (even if it was a bug) that may have affected a handful of the stupidly rich shows just how disconnected from the p(l)ayer's priorities the Dev Team is.

You should be fixing game/client breaking bugs, not stupid ones. Fix the bug that created the items. Delete the new stuff sure. But be aware that there are legit ethereal cloaks out there.

(No, I don't have any of this stuff - nor know/care how it was made.)

I totally agree - all dupes, exploits, cheats, and yes bugs, need to be addressed. But for extreme pricing? Wrong reason! Do it because, plain and simple, its a dupe, exploit, cheat and a bug. Do it across the board for everything that the team knows about, and there are many other known issues out there than this, not just one.

Your decision is really disappointing. I hope you reconsider.

I bought a set of ethereal clothing a long time ago and I didn't know there was anything illegal about it. I'm sure there are many others who didn't know either. We are going to get punished now just because someone took a chance on something that turned out not to be the real deal? I'm sorry they lost out, but you know what they say... "buyer beware!" In my opinion, it was their fault/choice to have made that purchase. You should not punish the rest of us for that.

Why not just make a statement informing people that clothing that looks pure black in a vendor's backpack might not be ethereal and tell them not to buy it because it might not be what the seller says it is?

People get scammed in UO every day, probably all day long... since when do you come to their rescue? Seriously. All I hear people say is that they are told lost items are not replaced. I never hear about EA/Mythic stepping in to deal with scammers. Perhaps I just don't hear about the scammers getting punished? I don't know.

Someone mentioned 35m, in a post above this one. Is that how much the fake ethy cloak was? Whoever bought it should have suspected it was a fake, just because of the low price. If they only lost 35m, then that wasn't bad for an important lesson learned.

By the way, 35 million is not much money anymore, at least not to most rares collectors.

To the liar who put a black cloak on their vendor and said it was ethereal - I'm sorry no one took the time to teach you right from wrong. It isn't too late for you to learn though.

This is all messed up, James. Please think it over. The ethereal clothing is cool and I would appreciate it if you don't destroy it.

Truth is, the black furniture is cool and the ethy stuff is lame. Hence, get rid of the ethy stuff that was created via duping and duping and duping.

And I don't care if anyone spent millions on ethy clothing, because its lame and makes you look like a noob anyway. You should thank the DEVS for making you cool again.
