UO hates my toon...

so, the skinny is that i can't log in on my carpenter.

the long explanation goes like this:

when i log in and click my carp/fletch, the screen looks like it's going to load, but then it minimizes to he system tray and i can't access it.

it only does this on THAT toon. all my other ones work fine.

also, i logged in to KR and could play that toon, no problems. so, i took him and logged him out at the inn, at my house, out in the middle of nowhere, undressed him and redressed him, logged out mounted and unmounted, etc...

each time, when i tried to log in to 2D, the same thing happened.

been doing that for 3 days...

thoughts?

oh, and this happened before a few months ago, but all i had to do was log in and move to a safe log-out location in KR to fix it... but that's not working now.

I had that problem with just one of my chars some months back. It went on for months and months and months. Fortunately it wasn't a char that I particularly cared about and rarely played so finally I gave up and deleted it.

i had that happen to me a couple times recently - the uo screen instantly minimized to my icon tray (or whatever it's called at the bottom of your screen) immediately after loading. it happened to me on 2 different characters. i WAS able to solve it. i'm just trying to remember how LOL...

i THINK i right clicked on the minimized screen and selected "OPEN" or "MAXIMIZE" or maybe "MINIMIZE" and then "RESTORE", or something like that. try that a few times and see if it pops open again. hopefully someone else will have a better answer, but the same thing did happen to me and i was able to fix it which originally i thought i couldn't. there were a few minutes of swearing and hair pulling but something about clicking around on that minimized bar and selecting basically every option available in random orders and i was able to get the screen to restore to normal. it's never done it again after i fixed it.

Have you tried deleting the character folder from your desktop, then restarting? If you have macros for the toon, save them first, then try delete/enter UO.

If that works, then exit UO to password input, copy macros.txt back into the toon folder and try again. If it happens again, then macros.txt is messedup and you need to rebuild it.

That may help ... good luck!

ooo, that's a great idea T'Amon - i myself will try that if this happens to any of my chars again... sometimes i go through and wipe out a bunch of my character folders just to do some house cleaning and to start fresh with macros and screen set up and stuff. good call...

Solution: Don't call your characters toons...
the word "character" denotes the "toon's" attributes and history.

the word "toon" simply describes what it is... a cartoon. as in, it's not real... it doesn't even look real. it is a code.

for all intensive purposes, I am the "character" because I decide what it will do and how it will act.

i doubt that the issue i'm having is related to the "character", but i coud be wrong. i would assume that the issue is with the code.

I hate your toon. in fact I hate any toon. In Ultima Online we have Characters. So it makes sense that UO would hate your Toon also.

that's funny. i'm rollin.

if it looks like a toon, it's a toon.

you know how silly "character" sounds?

character denotes that it exists in a particular setting and is involved with a certain plot. (you can google fantasy theme or narrative paradigm for analysis on this)

the word toon is used to replace the word character, especially in a virtual community that lacks a working and building plotline.

since there are relatively few events and hardly anything that really relates to the origins of UO lore, we cannot have "characters".

these days only role players have characters. the rest of us have toons.

that is, unless you have a better paradigm and analysis for understanding why we should use the term "character"

You think character sounds silly... And you call your avatars (better than character?) "toons." lulz

avatar... that's funny, too. you do know what avatar means, right?

there is only 1 avatar, yet we all have them.

all i'm saying is that every preference for what you call your character or avatar or toon has flaws. there is no perfect answer for what they should be called.

all i'm saying is that people should respect another's preference.

if "joe gamer" wants to call it a toon, don't pancake about it unless you have better (evidence supported) alternative.

avatar certainly SOUNDS better, but it is probably LESS correct than toon or character and there's probably a really good argument against internet users co-opting a religious concept (vishnu) and/or using a code-generated object as a way to identify themselves.

it's a toon. it's a character. it's an avatar. WHO CARES?

Virtual Identity? That one is pretty sound....

yeah... i think i can get on board with that. call it "VID" for short?

so, it'd be like: "UO HATES MY VID!"

but it can only work, i think, if you ACTUALLY are yourself (attitude, beliefs, actions)... maybe... not sure what the ramifications are, but VID does have a better ring to it.

might give it some thought...

nice one.

Send me an email with the account name, server, and char name (jdalberg AT ea DOT com) and I'll look into it. It's probably something we'll have to fix.

Try deleting the desktop folder for that particular character.

start > my computer > Disc C: > Program Files > EA Games (or a UO file) > Open UO Folder > Desktop Folder > access the account folder the toon is on > select the shard folder the character is from > delete the folder for that particular character.

How about Pixellated Representation?
This one get's my vote.

But on a side note, each of my characters represent a different facet of my own personality, Yet each one also has his or her own distinct personality. The two combined make up each of my characters.

Is that weird?

I have always been partial to calling them "Avatars" :)

Regarding the OP's issue, I have a couple of chars like that, you need to contact customer support, it's something that the in-game GMs can't solve it (I paged them before).

But I haven't bothered with it so far since I use them only for cross-shard gifts, heh

Is UO showing at the bottom of your screen?

Right click on it, and select "maximize."

Someone else suggested this too I think.

Try that before the more drastic options.

the problem's solved.

here's some answers:

1) yes, UO was in my task bar, just like normal
2) yes, i could right click it and pull up the menu to close, minimize, maximize, etc
3) no, none of the options in the right-click menu worked
4) yes, it showed up in the task manager just like normal
5) yes, it was using just as much processor and memory as it would be if i were actually playing
6) no, changing affinity or priority didn't help
7) yes, when i chose "end task" or "end process", i got the "client.exe is not responding" message - you know the one
8) no, rebooting didn't help
9) yes, the problem was with the 2D client
10) yes, i am running Windows Media Center

here's what i think caused the problem and some other info:

1) last time i played it, i did not log out in a safe location
2) this has happened before, but it's usually much easier to fix
3) before, all i had to do was (pre-KR) wait for server to reset or (post-KR) log into the account with KR and move to a safe spot
4) the issue was going on for 3 days before i posted and doing the KR trick didn't help
5) so, for me, the problem happens (occasionally) when i don't log out in a safe spot (house or inn)

the following fixed the problem:

i copied my toon's folder, then deleted it, then logged in (which worked), then logged back out, then pasted the old folder back in its spot (deleting the new folder generated by logging in), then logged back in.

post-fix problem(s)

the only problem i've seen so far is that my interface was reset. the spell icons/skills/all that stuff were removed from their places. also, the screen was resized smaller and reverted back to its original position (i have a 22" monitor, so my game window is set to leave me about 5" and the actual game window is offset to the right so that Ventrilo overlay doesn't block me out).

all of my macros still worked and when i opened my paper doll, backpack, and status bar, they appeared right in the places i left them.

so, if you ever have to do this, be warned that you may have to drag and reposition any spells and skills EVEN IF you copy your toon's entire folder.

anyway, thanks again for all the responses, but i'm all fixed up now!!!
