So just out of curiosity, I googled up some forums for EverQuest and Asheron's Call. Back in the day these two games, along with UO, were called the "big three" and comprised the only real MMOs in the world. Nowadays Asheron's Call is puttering around with a tiny fraction of the players UO has (seriously like 10k total players in the world or less) and nobody has even thought about EverQuest in years. I mean these are seriously old decrepit games.

You know what I saw? A bunch of people talking about their game, what they were doing in it, or how they couldn't log in and they were mad. Normal stuff. You know what I didn't see?

"Wah wah, I bet Diablo 3 will kill this game for some random reason!"
"Boo hoo, some random crafting change nobody even cares about has killed the game!"
"It rained today, I think this game is doomed!"

Not one. Not one overwrought crybaby thread where someone goes "Duh guys I just realized it's not 2001 anymore and the game has less players!" and has an emo ragefit. Not a single bloody one.

What I want to know, and this is a SERIOUS QUESTION not just hurfblurf, is why the UO community on this board takes on the character of an antebellum southern lady heading for the fainting couch everytime literally anything in the world happens. Why are AC and EQ people so much cooler?

Might I recommend looking at the forums for more recent games?
In many cases, they've left me thinking that Uhall is quite civil and un-needy :)

Except that Sony is pumping a lot of money into an EverQuest sequel that is supposed to be a return to the original EverQuest style, just with an updated engine/graphics. It's even set in the same world, well it's in a "parallel" world that can be changed from the original. Which is a cheap way of re-using old content.

EQ is already answered - they are getting a major sequel, and EQ and EQ2 are still pretty active, with probably more players than UO. AC has resigned themselves to the fact that AC will never go anywhere. I think a lot of UO players, myself included, know that UO could be a lot more if EA would loosen the purse strings, and that is frustrating.

Honestly though, UO players don't hold a candle to Warhammer angst and anxiety. Go read the official Warhammer forums on BioWare.com. Those guys are down to just a handful of servers, and they know they are on borrowed time. Wrath of Heroes is probably their last chance. Those guys are probably surprised that Warhammer is still around. That is a seriously angst-ridden bunch of players.

In the span of just two months, they went from a launch of around a million players (I think 1.2 million copies sold) down to 300,000 subscribers, and now just three and a half years later they are far less than UO.
For a more balanced view of the UO playerbase read the professions forums and other general forums rather than UHall.
People tend to forget that only a very small fraction of UO players partipcate in UHall/Stratics in general (or any of the sites).

Those games may still be running but were already killed. So was UO really, but player seem to think that UO is still relevant, so they feel it being threatened when its not.

EQII is still incredibly active, as it has been made free-to-play. Gaming UI hubs, such as Steam, now support their free download in their store.

I'm talking about EQ1, people. Not EQ2, which is of the same vintage as WoW, and not some unknown future EQ3.

Honestly the only people anywhere close to as angsty as UO players are probably WoW players. I've actually seen "This game is dying!" and "How long does it have left?" threads over there. For freakin' WoW.
