UO Chat

Hello all.

I am here just to make a couple of comments regarding the chat that is part of our game now.

First, I think it is a great tool for communicating with friends and enemies alike, and very useful for buybacks, calling in help, etc.

However, I had a dilema strike me today that I was not sure how to handle.
I am a evangelical Christian. That means I wear my Christianity on my sleave and people should be able to tell it from my actions.

I AM NOT SAYING I AM PERFECT OR HOLIER THAN THOU...ONLY THAT I TRY, AND THAT I AM FORGIVEN.

When my vent gets out of hand, I log for a while and come back later. Same with in game local talking. If it goes a direction I do not like...I leave.

But it seems that this Chat is continuously out of hand, and I would pretty much have to leave it and not come back. Thus, missing out on the benefits it can provide.

So, for the past 1.5 hours I have been discussing the merits of Christianity to all who were in chat, and answering all of the questions to the best of my ability. It was an interesting turn of events, and one that I am willing to repeat as often as necessary.

So, if you do not want me to go down that line, all I ask is that you keep chat somewhat civilized so we can all enjoy it. There are plenty of places to come and rant if that is what you need to do. (here maybe?)

And yes, I did make a list of those I said I would pray for, and I will do so write after this message.

NOTE: I looked in the ToS and could not find anything preventing the use of Christ, God, Religion, or Politics. If anybody can post a link to a site that tells me differently let me know.

I agree chat becomes a little much at times. But thats where you gotta sign out, until they come up with something better, as far as filters, and mute/ignore. Not much you can do. We play a game with a vast range of age groups and beliefs. I myself am Agnostic. And no matter what, you are gonna run into things you dont like, or dont agree with, since we are so diverse.

I agree with you 90%.. but religion has no place in this game. Our previous conversation went nicely until other uninformed folks intervened.

A game that summons daemons, has worship in arcane circles.. a game with pagan reagents, necromany. It takes a full believer to keep following a game such as this. More power to you.

But it does not belong in the game, sir. We are all entitled to our beliefs.

If I don't like the way a conversation is going I leave. But I also sometimes create another channel, so that if anyone else wants to join me in talking about other topics they may do so. If the chat is getting out of hand, leave the channel, but see if there's another one active.
Sometimes it's a good idea to realise when you're flogging a dead horse, or arguing with a drunk (which is the same thing imo). The conversation is never going to make any sense, so give up on it.

Obviously the global chat is fair game for whatever as it isn't moderated nor do I think it should be as everyone has different ideas of what is, and what is not okay... BUT I personally do not have any religious beliefs nor do I play UO to debate them. That's fine if you are whatever you are or do or believe, but UO isn't the place to preach.

I deeply enjoy discussing politics, philosophy, religion and the like, but honestly.... **** talking and whining through the global chat is something I can deal with and don't mind, but if I firmly believe that we shouldn't impose or own religious, spiritual or political (and all the other) morals onto a frickin video game, just have fun!

If you don't like chat because it doesn't meet your religious standards then don't listen to people and leave chat, as I can do the same, but I would like to use chat for things involving the game or conversing... not preaching as I stated above.

I think it could be nice if we could be in 2 chat at same time, then the ones who want to bable alot could open a second char for their debat and still be in general chat.

This may only be a game but we are not just our char, we are also a real life person with different our believes. We need to respect our differents and also remember, there may be kids in the chat too, many parents do let their youngest play with them and some of them may had learned to read.

Lets hope Devs will get hurry with the ignore and filter options.

Well judging from what I seen in our Siege chat, ya got a LOT of folks to pray for !

I leave chat too some times. I agree with Petra, hard to argue or debate with someone whom is drunk ..some of em actually ARE drunk, when they are playing UO, some of the times they are playing. And some other few well, it be like trying to host a battle of wits, with unarmed men/women !

One thing ya got to remember though, is Jesus as a human being and a man, not only preached he led by example. People spat on his face, put him down,
and he oft turned the other cheek which is extremely difficult to do at all, even as a Christian.

Yet sometimes that is all one can do, ya can argue you can defend yourself or your beliefs, someone is gonna still target ya to throw a rock at your face or spit upon you for not being just like they are or *hang ya out on some cross* villifying you* in game, in chat, or here on the forums, cuz you are not [IN with the IN crowd.]

For myself, a born again Christian, the strongest man to me, whom led by example, on this planet is the one whom got spat upon, got villified for being just whom he was, is still villified to this day, for being unique or different from the 'in crowd', got hung on a cross, and then calmly in his last breath upon earth said...

I don't mind what goes on in the chat channel as long as its not racist, homophobic, sexiest etc...

I also like to see people excerise some caution. I don't mind anyone talking about religion or ranting about PvP, as long as its not excessive (i.e. for a long length of time and isn't addressing anything new, is just the same point over and over again).

I'm not religious in the slightest but I respect other peoples beliefs.

I left chat due to blah's spam before all this started but Kudos to Amanda. We pretty much have the same belief system but he sure appears to adhere to it alot better than I do. Sometimes the best thing this recovering alchy/addict can do is to not pick up which to me is a miracle in and of itself.
I probably tend to go overboard on the dirty one liners but nobody is perfect and considering some of the thigns I have done in my past, If spouting a few nasty jokes out at some annotance in chat is the worst thing I have done all day then I'm doing a pretty good job.

Amanda, your courage is noteworthy, its just to bad, that most will take what you said completly wrong and blow it way out of context...I didnt think you were preaching at all, you were sharing your beliefs and that is everyone's "Right" but when your a christian then its not a right to state that!

because the only "Offensive" thing anymore is when you share your beliefs as a christian, which i find so funny in todays society....

My attention was distracted by the Blah event in Chat.
Normally, I do not use this Chat and was only listening to others in
Alliance chat about Blah.

I have patience to things which do not directly in-game. Chat is not a problem.

Is Chat really useful...I believe it allows instant venting of information; such as,
trades between players which would not happen in-game just a few steps away
from combat. It is better to talk than not !

Chat will remain useful to most players... but like all things in this game,
if players can not control it then some players will destroy it.

The SPAMMING is irratating. It is a way to stop the use of Chat.

If you plan to curse please be more creative in use of words.

Keep the chat to a minimum and toward some point of meaning.

Enjoy yourself. No one going to make you behave.

I had to respond to this one, becauase it actually came up in a round about way in the chat yesterday. So let me tell you where i am coming from...

I believe that we are all within the acceptable will of God to have fun and enjoy life...as long as that enjoyment does not conflict with the direct will of God.

As you aplty pointed out, my characters are both murderers. Since this is a fictional game, I do not believe I am breaking the commandment to not murder, nor the commandment not to steal when I loot somebody. However, these are both actions that are built into the game and are completely associated with a character. Here is where people cross the line in my opinion...

When your character begins to espouse what would be tantamount to verbal abuse of another player/character, I do not believe in most cases it is the "character" that is saying these things, but more specifically it is the thoughts and written word of the player behind the character trying to throw insults at the other players on the receiving end. It is completely possible that you can throw insults at the other character in a way that is considered "role playing", and I don't take offense at that. But when people use language that is foul and directly meant to insult the other PLAYER, then that is too far...again, in my opinion.

An analogy if you will:

Do you think that signing onto ICQ under an alias absolves you from all responsibility associated with the words you say? We all know that people have been held accountable by the conversations with other people...

I further believe that the conversations we have under an alias are subject to the justice and judgement of God. (which NONE of us wants..we would much prefer his mercy)

But if in your heart you know you are directing your comments to the player, then you have crossed the line.

I will give you an example of yesterday when I lost control...(see "not perfect" in first post)

Yesterday I was taunting the player behind "Tru" about always being in stat and spending money to play a game which he spends all of his time in stat. I did not use foul language, but my words were delivered to get a rise out of him. I was a little angry at the time, but no excuse. I believe that God looks unfavorably at these kinds of episodes because he knows my intentions and my heart.

So in summary, if you can insult somebody in a role playing manner without conflicting with the written word of God...more power to you. But the needless, endless foul language within the Chat channel I will try to combat by hi-jacking the channel with some good ole Christian apologetics when it gets to be to offensive. For the record, I discussed this yesterday in chat for 1.5 hours. I finally had to go to bed...

For the record, Tru, I am sorry and apologize. The words I said were delivered to make you angry, which was wrong.

My apology to those who found the picture offensive. I thought it merely tasteless. I have removed it. Politics and religion are a hornets nest I'd rather not get into on these boards. Please feel free to discuss them in the OT No holds barred forum, but here I think the conversation/argument has gone far enough
