UO and Windows 7 Starter

I use Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit and it works fine. You shouldn't have any trouble.

Well the concern is that Windows 7 Starter seems to be the operating system for most netbooks. From what I read, the starter version does not have all of the features as the other versions. We still haven't decided if we want to buy a netbook or maybe try to find a small notebook. Thanks everyone!

My iPhone has more processing power than most netbooks . I would get a laptop for sure.

I agree with Yen Sid. Windows 7 Starter will run UO; that isn't the issue. The Netbook is just going to be underpowered for both the video and processor.

Which is rather irrelevant, as its not the processing power thats the main problem.

And Iphones suck.
I beg to differ since the CC runs off of the CPU opposed to the GPU or so I'm told, I use the EC anyway... And your entitled to your opinion about the iPhone but I don't think you know anything about them and if you did you wouldn't think they suck. Why don't you stop being a troll and help with the discussion rather than trying to have a flame war.

Back on topic, if UO isn't the only thing your gonna have on it, get a laptop instead of a netbook or your going to be rather limited with it's capabilities.

We'll be running the classic client. Basically my boyfriend wants something that he can take to work. He can surf the internet a little and possibly play UO on his lunch break. It needs to be small and preferably something inexpensive in case it gets stolen or damaged. We already have a high end laptop for traveling but it is way too bulky for his purpose. I saw a Toshiba laptop that looks great but it's $800. If we could get away with a cheaper netbook, say $300, then I wouldn't cry as hard if it was stolen or damaged. :)

The CC is mostly dependent on the CPU, yes. But even a netbook CPU is going to be well enough to run the CC.

Its exactly because I've had them (3,3gs and 4) that I think they suck. But meh.

laptops are generally cheaper...the question is really only about portability and whether you need something light and easy. If not, then laptops are best.

I'm on my 3rd Toshiba laptop (2xp, 1 vista ultimate, Satellites) I'd say look around, all of mine have been around $400.

PvM wise net book will work just fine. The only issue with net book is that the screen is abit small so you can't run 800x600 game area.

I ran CC on a HP net book and it ran great. I was doing peerless, killing stuff. Smaller game area does pose an issue sometimes.

I would say a 12-13 inch laptop might be your best choice.

Another issue might be that window 7 on a net book might be too much.

Well, if $$ is an issue, you could check some of the local used computer shops, if any. They usually have older laptops for a few hundred if you're willing to just wipe them and deal with not having all the current useful stuff on them.

UO CC ran fine back in 97 on (as I remember) my amd K6 233 (or 450? can't remember). The only thing on netbooks you'd probably be uptight about is the screen space, but if he's just doing simple hunting and crafting he probably won't really care unless he's in high-traffic areas or pvping.

Indeed, Toshiba "Satellite" line has some small very cheap laptops. I had a Satellite before I got my Viao () and it was a good computer, never had a single issue with it...until I dropped my medicine ball on it.

You could get a cheap 15 inch one no problem. But you can find some good netbooks for cheap too if he really wants something 10-11 inches.

I too am in a similar situation. I have my lovely high end Viao, but since i bike 7 miles to work, I don't want to risk its screen, or deal with its weight in my pack, so I am also thinking about getting a "work" computer, since my job is 85% sitting doing nothing.
