To anyone who dosnt know, before uo started back in the late 90's there was a beta testing for it. And before the beta testing there was a Pre-Alpha testing for it. Just like there is for any modern MMO. I recently was doing some research cause im tring to create a 2d MMO, and i some how stumbled across the file that contained the pre alpha client for ultima, with some tweaking i mangaged to get it to work. Not that anyone cares but, check out this screenshot i made from it. Kinda crazy to think this is where it all started...

This pic was where the pre alpha ended, Lord British was on top of that building with a few other dev team members, and all the players were on the ground. Il be posting more screens once i figure how to spawn the lord british toon again. During the Pre-alpha its confirmed that the lb toon was actually played by Richard Garriot himself. The map is different than the beta and on, richard made it himself, it just contains the town of Brit, it has a few similarities to what it is now, but not much. To the left was an orc encampment, farms, and some trees for crafting purposes, above was the castle, to the right was a Trade area, and below was a quest area to kill an evil mage. Il be posting more..

Hmm. This looks a lot like the new client to me. :stir:
Its not. Secondly im not serving it. Just messing with it. If for some reason someone had a copyright problem they would go after the people that posted the link where i got this file. But irregardless its not :)

I also used to play a game called Dransik that looked very much like that, was the only game I ever liked almost as much as UO.

Yea its way different than uo is now for sure. Its on a leveling system, im really glad they changed that or most of us wouldnt be here today. When i get the quest to work where you fight the evil mage that should be fun, but from things ive read in the past it takes like 20 people to kill him in alpha...

Dragon Warrior beaten in 18 minutes.

Tool assisted, meaning they basically played through it a frame at a time with savestates so they could go back, wait another frame (and another change of the RNG) and try again, etc. Still neat.

Edit: The video is presented as a single continuous playthrough, I didn't mean to imply you'd have to watch them try over and over again.

I've still got it, BOOYAH!
I still remember how much fun I had playing those games with my brother when we were kids. He is Mr. Strategy, and is very good at all things video game combat, whereas I always enjoyed exploring, and solving puzzles. Since the old RPGs contained elements of both, we would team up to play those games. While I happily made huge, intricate, taped together graph paper maps, keeping track of quest objectives, items and "clues" and advised him where to navigate, he happily slashed and hacked everything that was in the way and figured out all the boss fights. We took turns in just general running around and monster bashing. Then they came out with strategy guides and professionally created game map printouts. I have used them when I played video games solo as an adult, and it is fun, but it will never have quite the same quality as lying in the floor on a throw pillow swiped from the couch, pencil in hand, marking down the game world a graph paper square at a time (dreading that a power flicker would wipe out our progress before the next save opportunity), with my brother clicking away with the game controller next to me, and now and then insisting that the computer cheats. :)

Ultima VII Part 2 was the one I liked the best.

Part 1 is the one that got me into Ultima (I'd played some of the others, but they didn't grab me like that one did), but any time I try to replay it, I can't get used to the clunky interface.

The Ultima Underworlds also sucked up a fair bit of my time, though I don't think I ever got around to finishing those.

Me and my brother did the exact same. On some games, one of us would control the movement pad, while the other did the AB button for SNES. It is scary how in sync we would be on what was supposed to be a 1p game.

So, I just found this thread.

Some of your screenshots are definitely from the same emulator project I was testing a few years ago.

I was a user in the forum attached to the Shattered Legacy emulation project and helped Max Scherr, the guy developing it (some high school kid back in the days) test some stuff and give feedback. We had been trying to advertise this project for quite a while but there were just not enough people trying to get involved in script development, testing (especially hardly anyone who played the original alpha), hosting and in addition the code base really sucked according to the dev who eventually wanted to move on.

Back then he was quite active and was always eager to help out AFAIK. I haven't emailed him recently; the last time I (and I guess many others) asked him, it was for open-sourcing the project which he has done last year I think. Unfortunately the old pages are not there anymore, so no documentation, no client (which was never hosted with the project anyway), no client.exe serverIP-modifier application ...

The sourceforge project site is:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/uoana/

I was told it's basically there for archiving. Still I'm pretty sure if you ask the guy, he'll provide you with server binaries etc. (pretty sure he won't send the pre alpha client itself though, since it's not his to distribute), not sure though if his e-mail address is still active. Last time with the open-sourcing and all he told me that he's not that interested in supporting the old project, so don't expect too much regarding that old emu. I'm pretty sure he doesn't even remember all the implementation details and communication packets. After all it's quite an old project.

Still, he mentioned that he might rewrite the emulator more cleanly at some point in the future, if he ever feels like it again.
