A thousand apologies if this post is needless, and most everyone already knows this stuff.

But my impression from the thread about the new Producer is that there's some confusion about the use of the term Ultima Franchise and its meaning. I've seen similar confusion about this concept before, in other contexts. So a post seemed useful.

Anyway, here we go, I'll try and keep it comparatively short and generic. And again, sorry if everyone knows this already and I was just misreading folks.

Ultima Online is based on a series of single-player games, the Ultima Series (sometimes people will call it Ultima Prime) that started in the 1980s and continued until several years after UO was already out. There was a main series, of 9 games (at least one of the games had 2 parts, so some people say there was actually 10, or a little more). There were also offshoot series, including Ultima Underworld. Most of these were computer games, there was at least one console game that I can recall.

Many of the most important NPCs and concepts from UO came originally from the main series. The Virtues, for example. Also Lord British, Lord Blackthorn, Minax, Mondain, etc. The epic Warriors of Destiny scenario came directly from one of the single-player games from the original series, albeit with major changes!

The Underworld series was the inspiration for the Stygian Abyss Dungeon, and the Savage Empire scenario, from way back, which gave us Savages and bolas.

Fictionally, the events of the first game in this series created thousands of parallels of the original Ultima universe, hence the shards. Events in UO have thus paralleled events in the Ultima Prime games. Paralleled; not exactly followed by any means.

In addition to these various single-player games and UO itself, the Ultima brand name also incorporated a few books, based on UO, and as far as I know no one has ever read them. There were also teddy bears named after the Virtues. (Some of you may remember this. Frankly as a marketing ploy it was something of a fail.)

So when they say this new guy is in charge of the "Ultima Franchise," the implication is that EA has some kind of plan for the brand name. Re-issuing the old games? Remaking them? Some have speculated there's a Facebook game in the works. (I forget how "official" that speculation is.) We don't know. And is a refocus on the Ultima brand name generally good or bad for UO? I have no idea.

Fun, related fact: The company that made up Ultima was Origin Systems Incorporated, or Origin, or OSI. EA bought them back in the 80s, before UO was made. So those of you who think EA bought UO? Incorrect. They've always owned it, as they bought OSI before UO was made. All that has happened really is that EA phased out OSI and decided to run UO directly, rather than through its subsidiary.

So,there it is.

Nice recap. I too played some of the early Ultima games (can we say Atari FTW? :lick: ) and have the Dragon Edition which includes Akalabeth. I still wax nostalgic and suffer the graphics just for kicks.

That's very cartoony. It works well, though, for worlds of high fantasy. But Ultima, as a series, has always been more of a low fantasy setting with a little of the high fantasy mixed in (dragons, etc.). And a more "realistic" art style fits better. That doesn't mean it can't be just as eye popping, just on the more realistic side. As an example, in that video, you see lights hung from thorny and curled branches (ala World of Warcraft). In Ultima games, you'd expect to see lamp posts with lanterns. But again, that doesn't mean you can't have special areas where that high fantasy art couldn't be used, such as a hidden Elven glen. But this overall effect dictates a different art style overall, less "cartoony".

It is the corporate fact sheet for NetDragon, which says they are working with EA on a new 3D version of UO to be released in 2012.

If games such as Diablo 3 and Titan Quest have taught us anything, it's that you can make a fully-3D, isometric game that actually looks good.

I can only hope for the same out of the EC someday. Note that I said "only" and "hope."

I would think that being charge of the "Ultima franchise" definitely puts Jeff Skalski in charge of the agreement between EA and Chinese game developer NetDragon Websoft to develop a new version of Ultima Online. (http://ir.netdragon.com/video/ultima.shtml) As noted in another thread, Mr. Skalski certainly seems to have the experience working in China to handle that kind of responsibility.

By the way, check out this little blurb about one of NetDragon's FTP MMO game, Conquer Online, being released for the iPad and Facebook: MobileTechReview News, Reviews and Discussion: NetDRagon Websoft to Release Conquer Online MMORPG for iPad and http://www.gamershell.com/companies/netdragon_websoft/888808.html. The review says the game will not have download fees, subscription fees, or an in-game shopping mall. How bizarre would it be if EA wants to have NetDragon do the same kind of development work for "the Ultima franchise"? NetDragon operates several games already for the English-speaking community, so I think it is totally within the realm of possibility for them to eventually run an English-speaking version of UO. (Go to 91 Community - us.91.com for their US site.)

Think about it: Yes, re-introducing the old Ultima games is cool and all. But does that really require having a top dog that is in charge of those and the Ultima Online we know and love? Is it really that big of a deal? I say no. I think there's something bigger coming along that is also going to have the Ultima name. I tend to think it's the work NetDragon Websoft is doing. I know the forum for UO that you get to via the parent company's website seems dead, but if you dig through it carefully you'll see that one of the last "official" type posts hinted that they were looking to move the feedback process to another venue, perhaps because that type of forum that we are used to wasn't as familiar or comfortable for their target audience. I really think they are still working on the project and that it's been kept under wraps all this time. If they want to hit a 2012 release date, then it makes sense to me that NOW is when you would start making preparations and laying the groundwork for the announcements. Some of those preparations would include appointing a point person at EA to field questions and, of course, manage the panicky buzz that is sure to ensue among fans of the "old" Ultima Online.

A Warhammer podcast by Jeff from some time ago (i.e., before March 2009):

Warhammer Online

Found the link to it here: Mythic Mini-March Madness: (1) Jeff Hickman vs. (4) Jeff Skalski - WHA Forums .

Also, an old bio for Jeff on the Warhammer site: http://herald.warhammeronline.com/devbios/jeffSkalski.php

Really don't know how old that bio is because I know at one point he became the Producer for Warhammer (the last half of 2009 or so) and then moved on to some sort of secret project.

You can find more podcasts that include Jeff here: http://www.warhammeronline.com/podcast/index.php. Just scroll down a bit to late 2009 or earlier to find them.

A few fact corrections for you Galen...

There are actually 19 games in the Ultima franchise, including UO. The list comprises Akalabeth, Escape from Mt. Drash, Ultima I-IX + Serpent Isle, two Words of Ultima games (Savage Empire & Martian Dreams), two first-person 3D Underworld Games, and two Runes of Virtue cartridges for the Nintendo Gameboy. (I am not counting bastardized "Lord of Ultima" RTS browser game.)

There are a myriad of official ports of the first six games as well.

In addition to these various single-player games and UO itself, the Ultima brand name also incorporated a few books, based on UO, and as far as I know no one has ever read them.
There are five novels set in the Ultima universe. Two set between Ultimas IV and V, following the adventures of new characters, and three which were written for UO2 - The Technocrat War.

There are also several mangas depicting the early Ultima games....just heavily 'reimagined.' There is even an anime...

EA bought OSI in September 1992.

I'm stealing a bunch of this from Ultima Aiera since they've been tracking it and I check there everyday, but Paul Barnett is the Creative director for Bioware Mythic, and he's been dropping hints about BioWare relaunching the Ultima series like mad, and he was heavily involved with the Ultima4Ever and appears to be involved with GOG.com getting the Origin catalog. There have been photos leaked of him during one of his presentations with a huge high resolution map of Britain behind him. The past few months he's indicated that he's got the support of the top people in BioWare, and at the same time he's been showing his "secret" Ultima project around to other EA executives. I thought he was having a hard time selling the project, but obviously not.

This summer, Barnett also played host to some Ultima bloggers in Virginia at BioWare Mythic - note "Ultima" and not "Ultima Online" and they seem to still be under NDA, but they seem excited.

These are related posts from this month from his official Twitter account where he posts as an employee of BioWare Mythic

September 8
currently trying to find a way to have all the old ultima maps re-made in cloth...!

September 8
Ultima 4 5 and 6 are now on GOG.COM , hey... I am starting to see a plan....!

September 3
Sorting out new stuff for the secret project with Dr Greg Z, he is a big supporter of our plans.

September 2
Ultima 4, free, on GOG.com , it's a miracle. It's like there is a plan to re-release all the great old origin games.... What can it mean?

That's all from Ultima Aiera which is one of the websites who was invited to Virginia this summer.

On a related note, EA seems intent on relaunching old franchises. A new Syndicate is being made, and Chris Roberts is working out financing for a new Wing Commander game. Besides Ultima Aiera, you all should be following Wing Commander CIC as there seems to be a lot of crazy **** going on, almost as if EA realized that Origin and some of its other old studios used to make incredibly popular games.

Franchising, a business method that involves licensing of trademarks and methods of doing business, such as:
Chain store, retail outlets which share a brand and central management
An exclusive right, for example to sell branded merchandise
Media franchise, ownership of the characters and setting of a film, video game, book, etc., particularly in North American usage

Ironically I agree with you on the need for a full 3D conversion (and that's twice that I've agreed with you in the past month) - it would be better performing, smaller files, and would be a lot easier for the artists to add in a lot of content, but it's not going to happen because it would mean ditching the CC and EA doesn't have the guts to do that and they are not willing to spend the money on it. While I'm sure Skalski is a good 3D artist, he wasn't hired to take over UO and convert it to 3D, he was hired for whatever EA is cooking up with Ultima.

As far as NetDragon, why don't you start a thread when they provide an actual screenshot rather than repeating the same couple of rephrased sentences over and over? Oh wait, that's a thread that won't be made anytime soon, if ever.

As for the EC, the problem is not with the EC itself - the EC is powered by the same engine that power Elder Scrolls Oblivion, Fallout 3, Rift, and a lot of other major games. The problem is that EA has a ****-poor history of taking two steps forward and one and a half back when it comes to new clients for UO.

If you want an example, even after the downgrade from the KR graphics, did you know that KR graphics are still in the EC? I spent about 45 minutes pulling the below graphics out of the EC client files and threw together a montage in Photoshop to show a little of what's still there. There was some other incredibly interesting stuff in the EC client files, but I'd probably be asked to remove them since they are probably related to the EC upgrade, but these are all KR graphics still present in the EC and that can be found on UOGuide.com.:

You should probably click on them as I think they are reduced in size by the forum software.

They didn't promise it to us in February, they announced it in February. They did say it would happen after Pub 71, and it's not in Pub 72, or at least they aren't taking it live since some of the graphics are present in the EC, which is disappointing, but it wasn't promised to happen in February.

That's not what I asked, and that seems to be a habit of yours to avoid direct questions or respond with misdirection.

The fact that you respond with a belief that EA would allow NetDragon to compete head-to-head against EA's own UO is laughable, especially given that NetDragon has a well established reputation for cartoony graphics.

And as for the kool-aid comment, it's actually "Flavor Aid" that had the cyanide added to it, not Kool Aid. :scholar:

So let me get this straight.

People have read the Ultima books?

Woah.

Next thing you'll tell me they made a television series out of Game of Thrones and that people watch it.

Oh, Marty:

EA bought OSI in September 1992.
You are wrong that I'm wrong, because I was clearly talking about the 1980s in a social-cultural sense.

And, about 1 minute or so ago, I decided that in a social-cultural sense the 80s ended in September 1992, when EA bought OSI.

Hence, by definition, EA bought OSI in the "late 80s," in a social-cultural sense.

A franchise to me implies that they are taking a long-term view, especially when it comes to videogame companies. Look at all of the hoopla over Mass Effect 3 and one of the possible outcomes, when it's not going to be out for months yet, and BioWare is already talking about using that as a starting point for future Mass Effect games. Same with Kingdoms of Amalur - months from being released, but they are already laying the groundwork for an MMO that isn't even in development yet.

It's a weird situation with UO though, because I doubt UO will be the driving force of the Ultima franchise. Barnett and others aren't out there trying to hype up UO, they are trying to hype up older Ultima games, basically setting the stage for remakes in some form.

When they start hiring additional people for the UO team, then I'll change my mind. I think it's good that UO is a part of something other than just being lumped in with the other Mythic MMOs. I'd be worried if they built up an Ultima group and didn't include UO in some way.

The Ultima franchise producer should really post about where UO fits into the scheme of things at some point. It's great that he talked to the UO team about the next few publishes, but he ought to be talking to us about the future.

I'm not defending EA, but they used everybody they could from what I've heard. I'm kind of torn because UO and the other Mythic games are hard up for personnel, but on the other hand if Star Wars goes down in flames, UO would probably be screwed hard after what happened with Warhammer.

Can't say that I'm a big fan of petitions... at least in terms of online games anyway... I don't think I can recall anything happening in or to the game based on a petition. I'd rather stick with following the concepts and plans that are actually going to be included in the game in some way, at least right now anyway.

I have my old "manifesto" post linked in my sig and it's still as relevant now as it was when I originally posted it (which IMO doesn't speak well for the devs or the game that it has remained so), so I'll just point to that as my statement towards the EC.

EA pays 20-40 EMs. EMs post here not identifying that they are EMs, and hence paid by EA. So yes, there is astroturfing on Stratics.
Now that's a far stretch to say EA is paying people to post on stratics. EA doesn't pay the EM's to post on stratics, they pay them to do what they do in the game, events. Just because they are employees of EA doesn't mean jack if they happen to have a stratics account and post here. They are paid to be EMs not posters.

Since we now have an art guy in charge of UO, or at least the Ultima franchise, I would like to think that things will improve rapidly.

The problem is that nobody knows just what it means for UO to be a part of the "Ultima franchise". If I saw some new hires being announced for UO, that'd be a great start, but EA lost hundreds of millions earlier this year, and new hires in general outside of Star Wars seem few and far between in the world of BioWare.

I'm not worried about a situation like Warhammer where the Warhammer arena game could pull resources away from Warhammer Online, because based on everything that's been gathered, whatever the secret Ultima project is, it's not going to have much to do with UO outside of drawing from the same universe. With Warhammer, the arena game is a subset of Warhammer Online, and is built on the same client and shares graphics with it. It's no wonder that some Warhammer Online players are worried. The Ultima stuff, sounds like a web-based remake of Ultima IV, helped by the Ultima4Ever twitter waking up today and chattering about how Ultima IV was the best RPG ever made, and Barnett in general seeming to be obsessed with web/social gaming.

The fact that they see fit to bring the secret Ultima project(s) and UO under the same person does get my curiosity going, but I think it's more of a marketing thing at this point, unless we see something major happening with UO.

I am also curious at how much he twitters or whatever it's called, and how that will apply with UO. Over the past year, it seems like the UO team was kept from talking about a lot of stuff or talking in general.

- I will say hi to Jeff eventually, regardless (..for now: hi Jeff).
But what I'm curious about is why his Stratics title is "Franchise Producer" and not "UO Franchise Producer". I'm also curious if he is to be, or already is, the next "UO Producer" or if whom has/will fill(ed) that position has/is yet to be disclosed/determined to/for us.

- So, is Jeff simply:
EA and/or BioWare Franchise Producer?
EA/BioWare Ultima Franchise Producer?
EA/BioWare UO Producer?
Or, all of the above?

(btw, UO is not tagged/advertised on the BioWare website main page, other than a text newslink to its GDC Hall of Fame member status.. just thought it might be worth mentioning as something to improve upon if producing UO, the Ultima IP/Franchise, or multiple EA IPs/Franchises..)

(Aye, I know a bit about the history of Ultima. I'm here to figure out what's the deal with UO, as I consider the future of the Ultima franchise to be explicitly tied to the future of UO and else re: Ultima. UO has been through some rocky roads and I want to hear more about its future; UO will largely determine my continued interest in the non-Garriott/OSI future of Ultima..)

They have all of the twitters, leaked photos, etc. about the secret Ultima stuff. They were also one of the Ultima sites that was invited to visit BioWare Mythic in Virginia and either view the secret Ultima project or at least be told about it. There didn't appear to be any UO-specific sites invited, just Ultima.

Obviously several of us follow Aiera at least occasionally enough to notice an increased amount of activity over the last 18 months. Maybe especially since our last anniversary.

Nothing specific to point to but I always got the impression we were talking about multiple projects happening simultaneously. I'm excited, especially in hopes of 4 through 7 or 8 getting a revamp and graphics overhaul.

Or a working 9, ugh, lol.

- Thx Woodsman. So he is definitely overseeing more than just Ultima Online. Look forward to hearing more from him, more about UO and more about Ultima.

Change of policy ?

Am I the only one who reads these things entirely ?

Attempt to use EA Software on or through any service that is not controlled or authorized by Electronic Arts. Any such use is at your own risk and may subject you to additional or different terms. EA takes no responsibility for your use of EA Software on or through any service that is not controlled by Electronic Arts.
No folks this is not another attempt to bypass the ROC ; I am right now and have been for the last 4 hours trying to get my account working again.

But this is a big change of policy... and look at this :

“Role–playing” is not an excuse for violating this or any other policy
So I guess roleplaying is a good excuse, it's just that "role-playing" is not.

riiight. :lick:

Am I spoiling anything ? :coco:

PLEASE READ THIS CAREFULLY. IT AFFECTS YOUR RIGHTS.

Most customer concerns can be resolved quickly and to your satisfaction by logging into our customer support interface with your EA Account at support.ea.com. In the unlikely event that EA cannot resolve a concern to your satisfaction (or if EA cannot resolve a concern it has with you after attempting to do so informally), then you and EA agree to be bound by the following procedure to resolve any and all disputes between us. This provision applies to all consumers to the fullest extent allowable by law, but expressly excludes *wth?* residents of Quebec, Russia, Switzerland and the Member States of the European Union. By accepting these terms, you and EA expressly waive the right to a trial by jury or to participate in a class action. This agreement is intended to be interpreted broadly. This Section covers any and all disputes between us (“Disputes”), including without limitation:

- claims arising out of or relating to any aspect of the relationship between us, whether based in contract, tort, statute, fraud, misrepresentation or any other legal theory;
- claims that arose before this Agreement or any prior agreement (including, but not limited to, claims relating to advertising);
- claims that are currently the subject of purported class action litigation in which you are not a member of a certified class; and
- claims that may arise after the termination of this Agreement.

P.S.- if I could get in game right now I'd probably go berserk on TC with the invuln suit !!!

Let's start a petition to add 3D mobiles to the EC.
OMG, why would you do that to me?? ;-)

Actually, I bring up that very idea just about every 3 months. But the cost in time and resources for that would be... substantial.

You could always recycle the third dawn client models... and that should be all the mobiles up to ML :p
