UBER MAGE

Your task, if you choose to accept it.

1. Display your vision of the ultimate PvM mage template.

2. Show the %'s of gear a player can get WITHOUT paying gazzions.
For example: 100% Lower Regeant Component (LRC) suit augmented by....XXX. Through common hunting of average mobs most players can accumulate a 100% med suit with the various armor parts found on trolls, ettins, ronin, or even as high as Rune Beetles.

3. Do not include items from dungeon dives/crawls. We are assuming a solo player please.

4. Crafted items are allowable as long as the items crafted doesn't call for something like a Dreadhorn.
For example" a Chest piece with 14% LRC, 5% Lower Mana (LM) and 5 points in each resist could be enhanced by a Tailor with Spined Leather to get an addition of 40% luck.

Common player stuff and how to build is the intent here please. Not, "Go to Luna-tic and buy Scrapper's Conpendium for a couple million and then buy yadda yadda yadda."

The exercise is to create (more or less) a character that is uber giv en standard casual middle to low end gaming involvement.

Explainations should be in simple English and not full of misunderstood paraphrasiology. I.E., Hakkzorz a 100 LRC MS wit twin 40 MR and get a goyle ta knock 70s across the slab. Nuff said CYA. Leet out.

Can you do it?

Lastly, if you do not like this scenario then please post one of yours that other people may be entertained and join in on that thread. :)

For example;

MAGE
100 Magery
100 Inscription
100 Meditation
100 Alchemy
100 Magic Resist
100 Evaluate Intelligence
100 Focus

If you have 720, dedicate the extra 20 to Magery, Evaluate Intelligence or Magic Resist in that order if you can find an inexpensive scroll.

For armor; Gather leather or mage armor that has totals equalling 100% Lower Regeant Cost. Gather Jewelry and/or held items items (rings, bracelets, spell books, weapons, shields)) that enhance Spell Damage and/or Faster Recovery and/or Faster Casting.

100 begging
100 cooking

100 forensic evaluation

If you only have 700 skill points available i would drop magery to 100...i dont wear gear i run naked in my UO diaper...

I am not sure this pure mage template is uber but I do just fine pvm.

First point is really hard to answer. There are way too many possible additional skills to magery.
For starting with barely nothing (so building up a char from scratch) I would recommend to take inscription. With buying reags fron npcs and selling the scrolls afterwards to them you can gahter enough money to get a simple starting suit. Besides that it raises int, meditation and focus. (In the long term focus is only a placeholder but it helps with mana reg on inscrition.)
Actually you should start with 49 inscription and maybe 49 magery. That way you can bring them up really fast to 50 and gather the haven rewards for the beginners quests. Next step would be to train inscription long enough that you can afford a filled spellbook. With that your way to gm inscription is open. With around 30-50k gold (takes some time by selling scrolls but inscription itselfs takes even more time) you should be able to get an meddable armour suit with 100 lrc and maybe mr 6 with acceptable resists. (Find an imbuer to imbue 4*17%, 2*16% lrc and 6*MR1 onto 6 exceptional barbed/horned armour pieces. Personally I would get a cloth hat-type part for my head just for the improved look of it. I dont like leather hats too much.)
Try to find/to craft a spellbook with 2 fcr on it. That way you can pick up any (cheep) 1/2 jewelry from a vendor and reach the mages cap of 2/6 for highest casting speed.
Basicly you are now done and should be able to explore all of Sosaria (after doing some magery trainings ofc).

Personally I usually would recommend to add fishing to this char. It takes some time to train and the income might not be the best but it is also not very risky and sea serpents are easy to deal with. For a fisher starting this way, you would even do fine without any powerscrolls.

Actually its not that easy to get an 'uber'-mage. Especially if you dont want to spend many millions on it. If you can find a friendly imbuer, you can get a really good suit for maybe 2-3 millions? (That is, if you provide all rare ingredients. Would be a 9-pieces suit with 70 all resi, mr 8, lmc 40, 100 lrc, 2/6 fc/fcr and 50 sdi. That suit would be build around a plain scrappers, a pendant of the magi, ring/bracelet that starts with 1/5 and exceptional crafted armour pieces.)
With todays possibilities you should include slayer spellbooks for your personal favorite hunting places. Especially on an 'uber-pvm' mage. In the long run on a pure mage theres no replacement for 120 magery & eval scrolls.

Thanks for the tips.

I am still relearning the game after being away.

I am not entirely certain about some of the phrases. Like what a "scrapper" is? I know of a Scrappers Conpendium, but that may not be what you refer to?

Additionally, I am of the understanding that a 120 Magery PS is the top selling PS? So that is like multiple millions?

I would be willing to pry open the money pouch for 50K - 100K on Pacific or Atlantic for such an item as I have that much in gold reserves. Fact is I do not vender dance and tend to just wander around seeing dfferent things, encountering interesting new content, and then killing it for the drops.

The rest of my limited time is spent crafting, resource gathering or even modifying my homes.

Pretty boring and limited but there you have it.

Yes, I am refering to a scrappers compendium. I usually buy my ones on europa for around 300k. It has fine mods and it is an easy fit in for most mages suits. Prices of those skyrocket if there are additonal mods on it. Ppl are trying to craft those and are selling the plain remaining scrappers for less than the material costs.

I cant tell you about the prices on atl or pac but legendary magery scrolls are easily going for 10+ millions.

Magery 110
Eval 110
Meditation 100
Healing 110
Anatomy 110
Resist 100
Focus 80

The healing/anatomy allows healing & curing without using mana thats better used for attack spells & doesn't get interrupted.

With 100 meditation, 80 focus, and 8 mana regen mana is no problem.

I'm not sure if you want room to grow and at some point want to acquire high end skills plus items. I get the impression that you don't, so let's throw out a few ideas. The basic mage consists of magery, evaluating intelligence and meditation. That gives you 4 additional skills to choose from. Some possibilities:
110 magery
110 evaluating intelligence
100 meditation
100 inscription (make your own spell books plus spell damage increase)
100 spellweaving (charm arctic ogre lord for hunting companion, gift of life for the solo player)
100 necromancy (lich form is great for scribing due to the mana regeneration, wraith form great for mana leeches, wither is good for area damage, etc)
100 spirit speak

Another option is to swap out necromancy/spirit speak for mysticism/focus or mysticism/imbuing (great for making your own magical items).

For equipment you will want 100% lower reagent cost and 40% lower mana cost. You should strive for faster casting 2 and fast cast recovery 6. If you include spellweaving on your template, then faster casting 4 would be recommended. (Hard to do on a budget.) Including mana regeneration and high resists (at least in the 60s) would also be very helpful. I am not sure how much gold you want to spend, but I would recommend purchasing a Scrapper's Compendium. They sell for around 250k on my shard and have a ton of benefits. The expensive scrappers usually have an extra property or two, but the basic one should be inexensive. Some other items worth considering are a necklace - pendant of the magi, tunic - rune beetle carapace, and a talisman called totem of the void. The most expensive is the totem at around 1.5 million. You don't need them right away but you can gradually swap out your crafted items with them if you want to. If you stick with the player crafted items, then you need to figure out what properties are most important to you and buy or try to craft those items yourself. For example, you can obtain 100% lower reagent cost by using armor with lower reagent cost 16% and 17% per armor piece, or 12% and 13% if you have it on your jewerly too.

Sure, let's compete. I have 3 Towers on 3 shards, a Sandstone rebuild and a small Mage tower on another two. All on one account. So, 5 homes on 5 shards, one account.

What do you bring to the competition?
.
.
.
.
The point being that everyone defines competition differently.

If you were refering to PvP I suggest UO is not the best platform. In fact it is catagorically not. Even WoW (When I quit a year or so ago my top 6 toons across the two accounts were in full Hateful and had Knight titles back in the day.) is better. Of course successfully dual boxing an open PvP environment may be too difficult for some.

But I digress.

To those with value added comments. Thank you.

The example I listed in the OP is what Istari (Atlantic mage) is going with. Webster (on Pacific) has Fishing GM'd as one of his skills. Socrates (on Oceania) follows the Pacific template.

A revisit:
Alchemy
Evaluate Intelligence
Focus(Fishing)
Inscription
Magery
Meditation
Resist Spells

Those are the skills presently on my Mage Templates. I am experimenting with the additional 20 point values.

As an aside, given that benefits are realized in levels of 20 points, is Focus even worthwhile please?

I will concentrate on gaining the Lower Mana and Mana Regen values posted above. I will also seek a Scrappers on Atlantic and Pacific. I thought they were all the same flavor but know I know to look for additional abilities on them.

As the mages I have are GM Inscriptionists, is it possible to buy a Dreadhorn ingredient from another play or do you have to be present at the kill please? I do not assess I can solo the Dreadhorn critter.

The Anatomy /Healing additions are a neat idea by the way.

Thanks again for the explainations. I find them helpful and I wager others do as well.

Cheers.

How focus works changed a few years back: Meditation and /or Focus will now benefit for intermediate values and not just for multiples of 10 (i.e. 80.1 used to give you same MR bonus at 89.9). Focus is about to be very popular on mystic templates, but other than that, it is not a very popular skill. I happen to have the same template you posted but I have fishing instead of focus. Don't get me wrong, having stamina & mana regeneration is nice, but the question is do you really need it or would spending 100 points on another skill be more helpful to you?

Well ...
Inscription benefits from having magery over 100. The more you have the better are your chances to get additional mods on spellbooks (including a scrappers). You can try out normal spellbooks to wager your chances on additional mods.
To your questions:
Yes, you can buy the dread horn mane from other players, if you plan to inscribe a scrappers, but i wouldnt do it (without having 120 magery). The ingredients for a scrappers are far more expensive than finished ones. Unless you want extra mods ... *points to above and chances* Taint usually sells for around 100k/each and you need 10 of it.
20 points in focus is barely worth the skill points. If you are on a human character it is even wasted. On humans skills with 0 points invested are working if there were 20 skillpoints (racial bonus: jack of all trades). It would be better to invest those points to raise two skills above 100 (magery and eval or med probably).

Do you exclude imbuing? At low levels, most properties only need residue and regular gems. Pretty easy to make, if you ask me.
